Ficool

Chapter 91 - Rivalry began over a girl.

After they finished practicing, Winston and Bongani headed to the football field where the one-on-one challenge was about to take place. They made their way to the back of the spectator stands and sat on the last row of seats.

The atmosphere around the field felt far livelier than it had during Winston's match. "Man, I've been waiting for this match for a while. I didn't expect Adrian to be the first one to challenge Daemon."

Folding his arms, another youth replied, "It was bound to happen. Whenever a girl gets involved between two guys, it's only a matter of time before they go to war. The real question is... who's going to win? What's your prediction?"

"Hmm... true." The first youth scratched the back of his head. "What's funny is that the girl who caused all this mess left both of them for another player who's apparently not even here anymore." He chuckled. "I think Daemon will wipe the floor with Adrian. He's improved a lot lately. Then again, Adrian's been working just as hard. Honestly... I have no idea."

The two youths were seated about five rows. A surprised expression appeared on Winston's face as he instinctively looked around. A faint, thread-like sine wave rippled through his ears before fading away, and his hearing returned to normal. His brows furrowed—again—it came and went. He glanced at Bongani, who remained comfortably seated, completely unaware of what had just happened. Winston focused, trying to trigger the heightened hearing again.

With a disappointed frown, he leaned back in his seat. Just as he reached for the bottle of water beside him, a voice called from behind.

"I'm surprised neither of them picked you."

Winston and Bongani turned around. Standing behind them with a bottle of water in hand was Hickman.

"Oh, Hickman." Winston smiled. "It's fine. I actually wanted to observe this match from the stands. I thought they'd recruit you too."

Twisting open his water bottle, Winston took a sip. Hickman climbed over the row of seats and sat beside him. "So..." he asked with a grin, "who've you got your money on?"

Bongani leaned forward between the two of them. "I've got my money on Adrian."

Hickman laughed. "Figures. You two are in the defensive group together."

He crossed his arms. "I also got Adrian too."

Winston screwed the cap back onto his bottle. "Daemon for me."

As the three continued discussing the match, Adrian and Daemon entered the field alongside their teammates. Among them was Oswin. The crowd immediately grew louder. The tension between Adrian and Daemon was obvious from the moment they stepped onto the pitch. Before the match could even begin, the two nearly came to blows. The referee and several Federation instructors quickly stepped in, separating them before things escalated.

Only after tempers cooled did the referee signal for kickoff. Adrian's team wasted no time. From the opening whistle, they launched a series of quick, direct attacks, clearly hoping to catch Daemon's team off guard before they could settle into the match. Their style revolved around fast transitions and long passes, stretching the field whenever an opportunity appeared.

Unfortunately, Winston couldn't make out either team's formation. When Adrian and Daemon confronted each other before kickoff, the spectators in front of him had stood up to get a better look, blocking Winston's view of the tactical setup. Even now, a few remained standing, making it difficult for him to study how both teams were arranged on the field.

Running down the flank, Adrian's team piled pressure onto Daemon's side, forcing them deeper into their own half. One of Adrian's teammates sprinted toward the corner of the field. After a quick series of dribbling moves, he whipped a high cross into the penalty box. Every player leaped into the air, craning their necks toward the descending ball. Fortunately for Daemon's team, one of his defenders rose highest and headed the ball toward the middle of the field.

Like ants swarming toward food, players from both teams charged after the loose ball. Oswin reacted first—using his explosive acceleration, he burst past the chasing players and reached the ball before anyone else. As he surged forward, the ball seemed glued to his feet. He weaved through the recovering defenders with fluid dribbling, his technique so polished that it rivaled Winston's. Approaching the edge of the penalty area, Oswin slowed for a split second before striking the ball with the outside of his foot. The shot bent viciously toward the far post. The goalkeeper launched himself across the goalmouth, fingertips outstretched—but the ball curled just beyond his reach and nestled into the right side of the net.

Thwack!

Holding his head up in the disappointed miss, he shook his head and jogged back into his position. The goalkeeper restarted the match with a high long pass into the middle of the field. Again Adrian took the ball possession with a header and they played a pressing pressure play that pushed Daemon team deep within their side. With a slide tackle from the side Oswin quickly pushed himself up into his feet and jogged forward. As his team now had the ball possession running down the left flank he periodically glanced at his teammates who were passing the ball slowly. Instead of a quick counter they sent the ball back into their goalkeeper. With frustration Oswin shook his head and stopped behind the players and shuffled back into his side. Daemon and his team passed the ball back and forth none of them wanted to put pressure on other team. Playing on the midfielder position Daemon used his precise passing to pass to Oswin who nutmegged the player who was coming to mark the ball out of him. With another explosive run he dribble forward with some few step over dribbling techniques. Adrian put pressure into Oswin who was sprinting along the flank. Reaching the corner of the field Oswin attempted a complex dribbling skills, with a stumble forward he nutmegged Adrian who was holding his blue bib vest.

Approaching the edge of the penalty area, Oswin slowed for a split second before striking the ball with the outside of his foot. The shot curled viciously toward the far post.

The goalkeeper dived at full stretch, but the ball bent just beyond his fingertips before curling inches wide of the right post. Oswin held his head in disappointment, shook it, and jogged back into position. The goalkeeper quickly restarted play with a long kick toward midfield.

Adrian's team won the aerial duel with a powerful header and immediately regained possession. They resumed their high press, forcing Daemon's side deeper into their own half. Oswin lunged into a sliding tackle from the side, poking the ball loose before quickly springing back to his feet. Now with possession, Daemon's team advanced down the left flank. Oswin repeatedly glanced at his teammates, expecting a quick counterattack. Instead, they slowed the tempo, exchanging short passes before recycling the ball all the way back to their goalkeeper.

Frustrated, Oswin shook his head and drifted back into position. Daemon's side continued circulating the ball patiently, refusing to rush their attack. Operating from central midfield, Daemon spotted Oswin's run and threaded a precise pass into his path. Oswin met the ball in stride. The defender charging toward him tried to poke it away, but Oswin casually nutmegged him, sending the ball through his legs before accelerating past him. With another burst of pace, Oswin surged down the flank, dazzling the recovering defenders with a series of rapid step-overs. Adrian immediately closed him down, matching his run stride for stride.

As Oswin reached the corner of the field, Adrian grabbed hold of his blue training bib in an attempt to slow him. Oswin stumbled forward—but with a deft touch, he slipped the ball through Adrian's legs before breaking free, leaving Adrian turning helplessly behind him.

Oswin burst inside with a sharp body feint before slipping a pass to Daemon, who had arrived with another teammate, flooding the opposition's penalty area. Adrian's defenders were fully aware of the danger. They stayed tight to their markers, using their bodies and stretching out their arms to deny Daemon's teammates any space. As a defender stepped in to clear the cross, Daemon's striker launched himself into the air and met the ball with a scissor kick before it could be booted away. Adrian's goalkeeper reacted a split second late. He dived at full stretch and managed to get the tips of his gloves to the ball, but the strike carried too much pace and power. The ball ripped past his fingertips and rocketed into the back of the net.

Thwack!

Adrian gathered his teammates into a huddle to discuss a new approach. After a few moments, he clapped his hands, and they broke formation before returning to their positions. "Come on, let's turn this around!" Adrian shouted, clapping his hands to motivate his team.

With the restart underway, the striker laid the ball off to a midfielder, who immediately switched it across to his fellow midfielder before it was worked out to the left back. The left back stopped the ball under his foot and surveyed the field, searching for an opening. After a quick stutter step, he decided against forcing the attack and passed the ball back to the center back. The center back then played it into Adrian.

For the next few minutes, Adrian's team patiently circulated possession, probing for weaknesses in Daemon's defensive shape. The tempo changed when one of Daemon's midfielders lunged into Adrian's right back with a reckless sliding tackle, catching him around the ankle.

The referee's whistle shrieked. Before anyone could react, Daemon and Adrian charged toward each other once again. They went chest to chest, shoving one another as an instructor hurried between them, desperately trying to calm the situation. Adrian ducked around the instructor, his fist already cocked back, ready to swing. Before he could throw the punch, two nearby players grabbed him and pulled him away. It took several moments for everyone to calm down.

After restoring order, the referee booked the midfielder for the reckless tackle before showing yellow cards to both Adrian and Daemon for their involvement in the confrontation. The stadium erupted. Some spectators cheered at the drama, while others whistled and shouted, completely caught up in the hostility between the two former friends. Very few people actually knew what had happened between Adrian and Daemon. Rumors spread that their rivalry began over a girl, and many of the youths had become more interested in seeing the mysterious girl than the match itself. As both teams prepared to restart play, the referee glanced at his watch and blew the whistle for a halftime.
