Chapter 74 - Chapter 73 — When Hope Smiled Back

Meiji 40 (1907) — Early Winter

Near Mount Sagiri

Kai — Age 15

The estate was silent.

Not empty—reverent.

Snow rested gently on tiled roofs and garden stones, untouched, as if the world itself feared making noise here. Paper lanterns glowed softly along the paths, their light warm against the winter dusk.

Kai felt it the moment he stepped through the gate.

This place carried weight.

Not oppression.

Not fear.

Responsibility.

Kanae sensed it too, posture straightening instinctively. Mitsuri's excitement softened into something quieter, respectful. Shinobu's sharp gaze slowed, analyzing less—feeling more.

They were led inside.

And then—

They met him.

Kagaya Ubuyashiki sat beneath an open veranda, wrapped in pale robes, his presence gentle yet overwhelming. His face was marked by illness and time, but his smile—

It was warm.

Truly warm.

"Welcome," he said softly. "You've all walked a long, difficult road already."

The girls bowed deeply.

Kai did as well.

And in that instant—

Ubuyashiki's breath caught.

Not visibly.

Not audibly.

But his heart—

It trembled.

He lifted his gaze.

And saw him.

The posture.

The balance.

The way the boy stood as though the world aligned naturally around his center.

And the face.

Even partially shadowed by winter light, it struck something buried deep—something ancient and aching.

No…

Not him.

And yet—

His hands tightened gently in his sleeves.

An echo.

No—more than that.

A promise.

Ubuyashiki felt it then: a ripple through the future, faint but undeniable. For the first time in years—true years—something inside his chest lifted.

Hope.

Bright.

Dangerous.

Beautiful.

He laughed softly.

The sound surprised everyone present.

Even himself.

"How wonderful," he murmured, eyes shining. "Truly wonderful."

Mitsuri blinked. "U-Um… did we do something funny?"

Ubuyashiki smiled wider. "No, child. You did something extraordinary."

His gaze returned to Kai.

"You carry a great weight," he said gently. "But also a great kindness."

Kai froze.

"…Sir?"

"I won't ask you to explain," Ubuyashiki continued. "Some things reveal themselves in time. For now—know this."

He inclined his head.

"The Demon Slayer Corps welcomes you. All of you."

The girls exhaled—relief, excitement, pride colliding at once.

Shinobu's lips curved into a small, genuine smile.

Kanae bowed again, deeply moved.

Mitsuri beamed.

Kai felt something tighten in his chest.

Not fear.

Responsibility.

---

The swords arrived three days later.

The blacksmiths came personally.

They were… nervous.

Not because of the girls.

Because of Kai.

Old men with hands scarred by fire and steel stared at him like craftsmen seeing a half-remembered dream step into flesh.

They laid the blades out carefully.

"One by one," the lead smith said gruffly. "Hold them. Let them choose."

Kanae went first.

Her blade shimmered softly as she drew it.

Pink.

Not loud.

Not bright.

A gentle, warm hue—like cherry blossoms drifting on still air.

The smith nodded slowly. "A heart that protects."

Kanae smiled faintly. "I'll do my best."

Shinobu stepped forward next.

The moment her fingers closed around the hilt, the blade shifted—

A pale violet, almost translucent, like butterfly wings under moonlight.

Gasps followed.

"A rare shade," the smith whispered. "Refined. Lethal."

Shinobu tilted the blade, eyes alight. "Perfect."

Then Mitsuri.

The moment she unsheathed hers—

The blade bloomed.

A vivid, vibrant pink, alive and warm, pulsing faintly as if it shared her heartbeat.

The smith staggered back. "Flexible nichirin… and it accepted you completely."

Mitsuri nearly cried. "It's so pretty!"

Then—

Kai.

Silence.

He wrapped his hand around the hilt.

The blade darkened.

Not instantly.

Slowly.

Like ink spreading through water.

Black.

Absolute.

The air felt heavier.

The blacksmiths froze.

One dropped to his knees.

"…Black," someone whispered. "Again…"

Expectation clashed with dread.

Legends whispered of swords that foretold uncertain paths.

Kai looked at it calmly.

No fear.

No confusion.

Ubuyashiki, watching from afar, smiled softly.

"Walk your path," he murmured. "Wherever it leads."

---

Uniform day came next.

No spectacle.

No indulgence.

Practical. Proper. Fitted for movement and survival.

Mitsuri pouted slightly at the lack of flair—until she moved and felt how perfectly it responded to her body.

"Oh," she admitted. "This is actually really nice."

Shinobu adjusted her sleeves with approval. "Efficient."

Kanae smoothed the fabric thoughtfully. "It feels… grounding."

Kai stood silently, uniform crisp, presence steady.

Then—

The crows arrived.

Kanae's landed first.

Elegant, calm.

"KANAe KOCHO," it announced clearly. "GUIDANCE AND HARMONY."

She blinked. "That sounds… serious."

Shinobu's followed—landing boldly on her shoulder.

"SHINOBU KOCHO," it cawed sharply. "SPEED. INTELLECT. LETHALITY."

Shinobu smirked. "Accurate."

Mitsuri's crow practically tackled her.

"MITSURI KANROJI!" it sang. "LOVE! POWER! EAT WELL!"

Mitsuri squealed. "I love it!"

Finally—

Kai's crow descended slowly.

It did not caw.

It bowed its head.

"KAI," it said quietly. "THE PATH OPENS."

A pause.

Then—

"DO NOT TURN AWAY."

The air stilled.

Kai met its gaze.

"I won't," he said simply.

The crow nodded.

And took flight.

---

That evening, as snow began to fall again, they stood together beneath the lantern light.

No longer children wandering toward danger.

But Demon Slayers.

The future was uncertain.

Bloody.

Unforgiving.

But for the first time in a long while—

Hope laughed softly in the quiet.

And the world listened.
