Chapter 51 - Chapter 51 — Ordinary Days, Precious Ones

Meiji 39 (1906)

Early Spring

---

Morning — No Rush

The house was loud in the way only comfortable places were.

Footsteps. Clinking dishes. Mitsuri humming off-key while stealing food she wasn't supposed to eat.

"Kai," Kanae said calmly, "she's taking your portion."

"I know," he replied, not looking up.

Mitsuri froze. "…Then why aren't you stopping me?"

He finally glanced over. "You'll feel bad later."

She paused.

Then slowly put it back.

"…That was unfair."

Shinobu snorted into her tea.

---

Streets of Azabu — Just Walking

They didn't have a destination.

That was the point.

They walked side by side through familiar streets, warm sunlight filtering through rooftops. Mitsuri skipped ahead, Shinobu lingered near Kanae, Kai drifted between them without thinking.

No swords. No drills. No expectations.

"Do you think people notice us?" Mitsuri asked suddenly.

Shinobu glanced around. "They notice you."

Mitsuri laughed. "Rude!"

Kanae smiled softly. "They just see children enjoying the day."

That answer stayed with them longer than expected.

---

Riverside — Shoes Off

They sat by the river, pants rolled up, feet in cold water.

Mitsuri squealed every time a fish brushed past her toes. Shinobu pretended not to react—until she slipped and grabbed Kai's sleeve.

"…Say anything and I'll poison you."

Kai, deadpan: "You screamed."

Kanae laughed openly, covering her mouth.

For a moment, Shinobu didn't snap back.

She just sighed and sat closer to her sister.

---

Fishing — Questionable Skill

They borrowed rods.

Mitsuri caught nothing. Kai caught two. Shinobu caught one—accidentally. Kanae didn't try.

Instead, she watched them with that gentle expression that appeared more often lately.

"You know," she said, "when you were smaller, I worried you'd grow up too fast."

Mitsuri tilted her head. "Did we?"

Kanae looked at them carefully.

"No," she decided. "You grew right."

---

Lunch — Cheap Food, Best Taste

They ate at a small roadside place.

Too much rice. Too much sauce. Shared plates, no arguing.

Mitsuri fed Shinobu without asking. Kai handed Kanae the last skewer. Shinobu didn't complain when Mitsuri leaned against her.

It felt natural.

That was what mattered.

---

Afternoon — Games Like Kids

They played.

Not training games. Not strategy.

Just chasing each other through an open field. Throwing pebbles into water. Lying on their backs, counting clouds.

"Hey," Mitsuri said, squinting at the sky, "do you think this is what normal kids do?"

Kai answered honestly. "Probably."

"…Do you like it?"

He closed his eyes. "Yeah."

No one argued.

---

Evening — Walking Home

The sun dipped low.

Parents didn't worry. They trusted them.

Not because they were strong— but because they protected one another instinctively.

Kanae walked slightly behind now, letting the younger three fill her vision.

She thought, If this year gives us nothing else…

Let it give us days like this.

---

Closing — Quiet Promise

That night, no one trained.

Swords stayed sheathed. Books stayed closed.

They slept easily.

Unaware—or perhaps aware, but choosing not to dwell on it—that these ordinary days were becoming rare.

And that was exactly why they mattered.
