Chapter 8 - The Space where we Undressed our Hearts

Chapter 8 – The Beginning of Something New

The next morning felt different.

Not because the campus had changed.

Not because the sky was brighter.

But because every time Althea thought about last night, a smile threatened to appear.

She was halfway through organizing her notes when someone slid into the empty seat beside her.

Liwei.

Her heart immediately forgot how to behave.

"Good morning," he said casually.

As if he hadn't completely changed her world less than twelve hours ago.

"Morning."

His lips twitched.

"You look happy."

She stared at him.

"You're smiling too."

"Am I?"

"Yes."

He looked down at his notebook, unsuccessfully hiding it.

For the rest of the class, neither of them paid much attention to the lecture.

Every now and then their eyes met.

Every time, both looked away first.

By lunchtime, the entire situation felt both exciting and terrifying.

Because now there was no pretending.

No excuses.

No misunderstandings.

They knew.

And somehow, that made everything more real.

A week passed.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Neither of them rushed anything.

They studied together.

Walked between classes together.

Shared meals whenever their schedules allowed.

The changes were small enough that most people didn't notice.

Except for one person.

Mira.

She narrowed her eyes across the cafeteria table.

"Okay."

Althea froze.

"Okay what?"

Mira pointed between Althea and Liwei.

"You two."

Althea nearly choked on her drink.

Liwei calmly continued eating.

Traitor.

"What about us?" Althea asked.

Mira gasped dramatically.

"Oh my God. There IS an us."

"No!"

"That is not a denial."

Liwei finally laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind Althea was beginning to realize she liked far too much.

Mira pointed at him.

"And you. Why are you smiling?"

"I smile."

"No, you don't."

"I do."

"You absolutely do not."

Althea buried her face in her hands.

This was a disaster.

A very entertaining disaster.

Later that evening, after the library closed, Liwei walked her toward her dorm.

The campus pathways were quiet.

Most students had already gone home or returned to their residences.

The air carried the scent of freshly cut grass.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Liwei suddenly stopped.

"What is it?" Althea asked.

He looked unusually serious.

"I need to tell my family eventually."

Her smile faded slightly.

"Oh."

"My mother will ask questions."

"And your uncle?"

"He'll ask more."

The weight behind his words was impossible to miss.

For the first time, reality stepped into the space they had created together.

Future.

Expectations.

Responsibilities.

Things bigger than feelings.

Althea looked down.

"You don't have to explain me to anyone."

His expression softened immediately.

"That's not what I meant."

She stayed quiet.

Liwei took a step closer.

"Althea."

She looked up.

"If I tell them about you someday, it won't be because I have to."

Her breath caught.

"It'll be because you're important."

The world seemed to go silent.

No traffic.

No voices.

No footsteps.

Just those words.

Simple.

Honest.

Dangerously sincere.

Her eyes stung unexpectedly.

"You always know what to say."

He shook his head.

"No."

A small smile appeared.

"I just tell the truth when it's about you."

Althea laughed softly despite herself.

And for the first time since they started this journey, she allowed herself to imagine something beyond tomorrow.

Not graduation.

Not distance.

Not uncertainty.

Just possibility.

The kind that grows slowly.

The kind worth protecting.

As they reached the dorm entrance, neither seemed eager to say goodbye.

Finally, Liwei sighed.

"You should go inside."

"I know."

Neither moved.

A few seconds passed.

Then several more.

Liwei chuckled.

"This is harder than I expected."

"What is?"

"Saying goodnight."

Warmth spread across her cheeks.

"Goodnight, Liwei."

"Goodnight, Althea."

She walked toward the door.

Halfway inside, she turned around.

He was still standing there.

Watching.

Waiting until she was safe.

And somehow that simple gesture made her heart race more than any confession ever could.

Because love, she was beginning to learn, wasn't always found in grand moments.

Sometimes it was hidden in the quiet ones.

The ones that felt like home.

Even before you were ready to call them that.
