Chapter 7 - Open Sea

The East Blue stretched endlessly before us, the horizon a line of pale blue where the sea kissed the sky. I stood on the deck, the wind whipping against my face, feeling the salty spray of waves. The boat rocked gently, creaking with each swell, but I didn't mind. This life felt real in a way nothing had before. In my last life, I spent hours confined to the same four walls, staring at screens, living the routine. Here, every moment was alive—bright, chaotic, and full of possibilities.

Luffy sat cross-legged on the bow, legs swinging over the edge. "Heh! The sea's huge! I can't wait to see what's out there!"

I laughed softly. "It's bigger than it looks from the village. But it's beautiful, isn't it?"

"Beautiful!" Luffy agreed instantly, tilting back his hat against the sun. "And fun! We can go anywhere, fight anyone, find treasure, meet weird people! Isn't that awesome?"

"It really is," I said, enjoying the carefree rhythm of his voice, the way the waves slapped the hull, and the gulls circled overhead.

The boat swayed more strongly as a small gust picked up. I adjusted my footing, feeling the subtle hum of Red Queen in my body. She stayed silent, as always, simply observing. Luffy grinned at the stronger waves. "Ooh! Waves! They're like a roller coaster! Let's go faster!"

I chuckled. "Hold steady, but enjoy it. The sea has its own rhythm. Learn it by feeling it, not fighting it."

He leaned over the side, letting the spray hit his face and laughing loudly. "Hah! It's cold! But fun! Cold and fun!"

I watched him, feeling an unfamiliar warmth in my chest. This was freedom, pure and simple. I leaned back against the mast, letting the wind tug at my hair and coat. My body felt alive in ways it hadn't in my past life. Every movement, every breath, every glance at the endless waves made me aware of how much I had missed by living so cautiously.

We rowed intermittently, letting the wind carry us, sometimes racing small gusts to see who could react faster. Luffy laughed every time he got a wave to rock the boat more violently. "Hah! Did you see that, Ji-Hoon? We're flying!"

I laughed along with him. "Flying," I repeated. The word felt strange but fitting. The boat rocked beneath us, creaking and groaning, but it carried us steadily. Luffy leaned over the railing again, pointing at a pod of small fish jumping from the water. "Look! They're racing with us!"

"They're fast," I said, smiling at the sight. Luffy's laughter echoed across the water, a bright sound against the calm of the early morning.

By midday, the wind had grown stronger, and small waves rocked the boat more aggressively. Luffy's energy never faltered, but I felt a small thrill at the motion myself, testing my balance and reflexes against the natural rhythm of the waves. I could feel every shift of the boat, every gust, every subtle current. The motion made me feel alert, alive, part of something bigger than I had ever experienced.

"Whoa! This is like a real adventure!" Luffy shouted, standing up and gripping the railing. "You feel it too, right? The waves, the wind, the thrill?!"

I nodded, steadying myself. "It's incredible," I admitted. "Everything feels different out here. Alive."

He laughed and spun in place, almost losing balance but catching himself. "Heh! I love it! I love everything about the sea!"

I watched him closely, enjoying his energy and freedom. It was infectious. I leaned against the mast, eyes scanning the horizon, feeling the warmth of the sun, the taste of salt on my lips, the breeze tugging at my hair. I could feel the sea stretching endlessly, full of possibilities, dangers, and stories waiting to unfold.

A sudden wave broke over the bow, splashing water across the deck. Luffy shrieked with delight, laughing as he wiped the spray from his face. "Hah! Did you see that?! The sea's crazy!"

I laughed with him, stepping carefully over the slick wood to avoid slipping. "It's unpredictable," I said. "That's part of its charm."

Red Queen hummed quietly in my mind. Wind speed increasing. Current patterns shifting. Stability optimal if current behavior continues. I nodded faintly, enjoying the quiet reassurance. She didn't need to speak unless I asked.

The day passed with small waves testing our balance, gulls circling overhead, and sunlight glinting on the water like scattered diamonds. Luffy told stories about the islands he dreamed of exploring, strange creatures he imagined, and the adventures he wanted to have. I listened, laughing at his exaggerations, marveling at his unshakable confidence, and enjoying every detail of this new life.

"I can't wait for the next island," Luffy said, stretching on the deck. "There might be treasure! Or pirates! Or monsters! Or all of it!"

"Anything's possible," I said, smiling. "And we'll see it all. You'll see everything you want to."

The boat drifted closer to a cluster of small rocks rising from the sea, marking a natural channel between two islands. Luffy jumped up, running to the railing. "Ooh! Rocks! We have to go through there! Bet there's something cool hiding!"

I followed, stepping carefully, feeling the subtle sway and bounce of the hull beneath my feet. "Keep your balance," I said lightly. "The water is shallow near the rocks, and the waves will push us."

He grinned. "Heh! Don't worry! I've got this!"

We navigated the channel, small waves slapping against the sides of the boat. Luffy's energy never wavered; he leaned with the movement, laughed at every bump, and pointed at every small detail—the fish darting below, the birds perching on rocks, the glint of shells along the edges. I smiled, letting the moment wash over me. Every second was new, full, and alive.

By late afternoon, the sun began to dip low. The water glowed with reflected light, and the wind carried a softer rhythm. Luffy collapsed on the deck, laughing and pointing at the horizon. "Heh! The sea's huge! I want to see all of it! Let's go everywhere!"

I leaned back beside him, eyes tracing the endless waves. "We will," I said quietly. "We'll see everything the East Blue offers first, then beyond. Every island, every adventure, every moment."

Luffy tilted his head at me, smiling wide. "Heh! That's awesome! You like it too, right? This adventure stuff?"

I nodded, letting a rare laugh escape. "I've waited my whole life for something like this. And now, I'm finally here."

The boat rocked gently as night fell, lanterns from distant villages reflecting faintly on the water. Stars appeared overhead, faintly at first, then bright against the dark sky. Luffy pointed at a cluster of them. "Look, Ji-Hoon! We can go anywhere under those stars!"

"We can," I agreed, feeling a warmth of contentment. The waves whispered against the hull, the wind carried the scent of salt, and I felt completely alive for the first time. Luffy yawned, leaning back against the railing, eyes half-closed but smiling.

"This is gonna be the best adventure ever," he mumbled happily.

"It already is," I said, watching the horizon, letting the waves carry us forward. The East Blue was full of stories, dangers, laughter, and moments waiting to happen, and I intended to enjoy every single one of them.
