Chapter 9 - Chapter 9—Test

Cole's eyes kept scanning through the details of the letter, scared to even open it due to the danger it might hold.

His past experiences seemed to have made him quite senile, but it didn't take long for him to determine the danger level.

He finally decided to open the letter, as he couldn't seem to reject the allure of the content of the letter.

He dropped his bed and, without wasting any time, directly opened the letter.

"Dear Cole Bremont, you have been offered a recommendation letter to attend the Spiriter's Academy (lower ring branch); you are to report to the Academy within 2 weeks. Failure to obey, all recommendations will be revoked".

Cole still stood in his place, completely confused by what he was seeing in the letter he was currently holding.

His mind seemed to flash back to the encounter with the mysterious man.

"Under your bed lies a pot of gold," the man said.

"Could this be the pot of gold he was actually referring to?"

"It possibly can't be, right?"

Cole began contemplating heavily, completely forgetting about his previous hunger.

"Let's say this is actually the chance he decided to offer me; do I really want this?"

Cole was currently in a dilemma, trying his best to make a decision.

"Should I accept and have a better chance of success in my revenge, or should I reject and find my own path?" Cole thought.

About thirty minutes later, Cole still hadn't seemed to make a decision; seeing he couldn't find an answer at the moment, he directly pushed the thought to the back of his mind.

Finally, after Cole had already satisfied his urgent curiosity, he decided to have his meal.

The plate of food sat quietly on the table, completely untouched. Cole moved to pick it up and immediately began devouring it.

"That was quite satisfying," Cole said while patting his stomach.

Now that his hunger has been resolved, he can think more clearly.

He moved back to his bed, the only place he could actually sit.

Cole sat there at the edge of his bed idle, as he hasn't been able to find any jobs to do for a while.

This left him with quite a bit of time, which he has always been using to move around the slum, but that isn't possible anymore right now.

In his idle state, Cole uncontrollably began to wonder about the battle he just had earlier that day.

He began by first actually sensing or trying to feel the changes in his body.

"Ohhhh, I was supposed to be injured," Cole suddenly said out loud as he finally remembered.

He tried feeling all around his chest and abdominal region for any sign of pain, but he couldn't seem to find any.

"Did the person that brought me home heal me in any way?"

"If that was what actually happened, then I should be concerned."

"What is in it for them?"

Cole's life seemed to be riddled with quite a bit of mystery, and he couldn't get to the bottom of it.

His mind also wandered to his utilization of the Eyes of Scrutiny and all of the information he actually gathered from the fight.

"Ohhhh, I could actually try out my record ability," Cole said out loud excitedly.

Using his past experience, he directly summoned the Empty Codex; the Codex appeared directly behind him quietly.

"I will try it with the Flaming Fist ability first," Cole decided.

He immediately began trying his best to recall all of the gathered information about the ability.

After he had settled his thoughts, he directly utilized the ability, and in response to his initiation, a series of events began to happen.

The Codex began glowing brightly, and its pages flipped directly to the first page of the book.

Cole looked at the process with a focused gaze, trying his best not to even blink.

While the page was flipping, Cole finally noticed a detail about the Codex; it currently seemed to have only three pages available.

On the first page, words began to appear alongside mystical symbols that seemed to hold the secrets of the world.

On the top of the page, Flaming Fist boldly appeared, its presence appearing to domineering effect.

Cole was suddenly hit with another round of dizziness while he was still inspecting the page.

This time, he didn't need any special guidance for the cause, as he could feel an obvious drain in his life energy.

"This drains such a large amount of life energy, I haven't even gotten the chance to test the ability yet," he grumbled.

To recover his lost life energy, Cole wasted no time and started chanting the World Absorbing Mantra quietly and slowly.

Life energy slowly began flooding Cole's body, refilling his exhausted life energy.

About thirty minutes later, Cole was back in optimum condition, his life energy completely refilled.

"Time to see how well it works," Cole thought.

In his mind he directly willed the activation of the Flaming Fist; unlike Cole's expectations, his hands didn't immediately set ablaze, but instead something slowly began to change.

Cole felt a shift in his life energy flow pattern as they all surged towards his hands, as opposed to how they flow towards his eyes while he activates the Eyes of Scrutiny.

His hands began to slowly heat up, embers and sparks appearing quietly almost completely surrounding his hands.

The sparks actually combined into a full-fledged flame, but the flames seemed quite different from those that appeared during Mathias's activation.

"Why do these flames also seem to carry that golden glow, does that make them stronger?" Cole wondered.

"Jab! Jab!" Cole excitedly threw punches into the air.

The air seemed to sizzle and split apart under the force of his punches.

"I feel so strong," Cole roared out.

His excitement wasn't groundless, as this ability seems to give Cole a chance to protect himself better.

"Let's test out the second ability," Cole decided.

Cole tried to recall the information he previously gathered but this time maybe due to the distance between them, Cole wasn't actually able to fully recall the details.

He obstinately used the ability, and slightly familiar texts and symbols began to appear on the pages.

"This is great" Cole thought, but this didn't last long as his face suddenly widened due to the changes in the book.

The normal process didn't continue but instead the book page went straight up into flames.

"What's wrong?" Cole screamed out as Life energy began spiralling out of control.
