Chapter 12 - Chapter 10 This Time, He Didn’t Stop Himself

Nicole had never been good at impulsive decisions.

But he was even worse at watching something slip away.

Sara was halfway down the steps when he called her name.

"Sara."

Not loud.

Not desperate.

But enough to make her stop.

She didn't turn around immediately.

That alone told him how close he was to losing her.

When she finally faced him, her expression was calm—but guarded.

Like someone who had already decided not to expect anything.

"We need to talk," he said.

Her shoulders stiffened. "I think we've talked enough."

"No," he replied, stepping closer. "We've avoided enough."

That made her look at him.

Really look.

The usual ease in his posture was gone.

His hands were clenched, jaw tight, eyes honest in a way she hadn't seen before.

"I'm not good at this," he continued. "At saying things when they matter."

She crossed her arms—not defensive, just protecting herself. "Then why now?"

"Because you're pulling away," he said quietly. "And I finally realized I don't know how to breathe without wondering if you're still there."

Silence.

Her heartbeat betrayed her before her voice did

"You don't get to say that now," she whispered. "Not after choosing silence every time it mattered."

"I know," he said immediately. "And I hate myself for it."

That surprised her.

Nicole never hated himself.

"I was scared," he admitted. "Not of you. Of how easily you became important."

Her eyes softened—just a little.

"I didn't want to say something I couldn't take back," he went on.

"But not saying it was worse."

He took a breath.

This time, he didn't step back.

"I like you, Sara. More than I planned to. More than I know how to handle."

The words settled between them—raw, unpolished, real.

She swallowed. "Is that all?"

"No," he said. "But it's the truth I'm brave enough to say right now."

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then—

"You should've said this before I started convincing myself you didn't care."

He nodded. "I know. And I'm not asking you to forgive me overnight."

He paused.

Voice softer now.

"I'm just asking for a chance… to stop being afraid."

Sara looked away, blinking fast.

When she looked back, her voice was steady—but her eyes weren't.

"I don't need big promises," she said. "I just need honesty."

"You'll get it," he replied. "Even when it's uncomfortable."

Another pause.

Then, finally—

"Okay," she said.

One word.

Quiet.

Heavy with meaning.

Nicole let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

Nothing was fixed.

Nothing was certain.

But this time, he hadn't let fear win.

And that was the beginning of something that could no longer be ignored .
