Chapter 18 - Seeking the Truth

Elion's performance up to now could be considered outstanding, a genius among the young people of his generation. But the reality was that he wasn't someone as extraordinary as many might think.

Up to this point, he had only been lucky because he possessed knowledge that gave him an advantage over others in the initial diagnosis.

Just knowing the disease of the patients who were admitted was more than enough for him to understand the important things he needed to consider.

Without that information, at least for Elion, he would just be another person in the group trying to diagnose an illness.

"I shouldn't go so fast." Elion thought he needed to slow down, go a little more carefully, and be there at times to contribute things that were truly important.

The boy's diagnosis would inevitably be discovered by his superiors; there was no need for him to intervene, but just like the first time, he did—and that brought him new tasks.

But what he didn't know was whether he could endure the symptoms of his tumor.

If he couldn't hide that problem while working and it was discovered, his career as a doctor would be over. The life he had been building in this hospital would be buried, and he would be forced to be admitted to this very hospital.

Being close to House could result in a disastrous ending.

That was why, in order to find an alternative, he would work nights as a doctor for professional assassins.

He had already sent his profile in for review and was now just waiting silently for a response.

In the meantime, he had to take responsibility for his diagnosis.

When Elion arrived at the room after making the preparations for a DNA test, he saw Cameron helping little Dan settle into the room.

His parents watched the boy with worry, apparently lost in their thoughts.

Elion approached and handed them two cups of coffee. "You don't need to worry. House is the best doctor in this hospital, and one that many of us know."

After saying that, he smiled slightly and continued, "As long as patients or family members don't hide information from us, we can support House in finding the source of the illness and treating it effectively."

When Elion mentioned the word "hide," Dan's parents exchanged a glance and used the gesture of drinking coffee to conceal their uneasiness.

It was clear that they were still keeping undisclosed secrets, and that was exactly what Elion wanted them to reveal.

For someone like Elion, who already knew this secret, it didn't matter whether they told him or not.

In any case, once he had the coffee cups in the hands of Dan's parents, he would have enough evidence to prove it.

"We're a very competent team. It's a shame that because of the patients or their families themselves, we lose the opportunity to save lives. There was a case, quite a simple one, that because the patient refused to admit a small secret, turned into something so serious that she ended up losing her life."

Elion sighed, as if what he had just described had really happened, and said, "We didn't discover it in time, but if we had only known that key piece of information, we could have changed things."

At that moment, Dan, who was sleeping deeply in the bed, suddenly grabbed the sheets tightly with both hands.

Then his eyes filled with fear, cold sweat broke out on his forehead, and his entire body began to tremble.

Moreover, his symptoms became increasingly pronounced as time went on.

Noticing the unusual condition, Cameron quickly identified the symptoms Dan was experiencing.

"He's hallucinating, Elion, I need your help!"

While he was still speaking with Dan's parents, Elion noticed the problem, hurried over, and immediately drew 2 mg of diazepam into the intravenous syringe that was beside Dan.

"Stay calm, this is a sedative and it will help your son rest without having these attacks." Elion, seeing the worry in Dan's parents' eyes, calmly explained what he was doing to their son.

As the intravenous infusion was administered, Dan's breathing gradually calmed, and his eyes visibly relaxed.

Then his eyelids slowly grew heavy, and finally Dan fell into a deep sleep under the influence of the medication.

After Dan fell asleep, Cameron finally breathed a sigh of relief and released Dan's body.

"Well done."

"I hope you give me a good evaluation in the reports." Elion smiled and asked Cameron, "Should we let the parents stay with their son for a while?"

"Yes, that would be ideal."

Hearing Elion's hint, Cameron nodded, stood up, and left.

Elion greeted Dan's parents, explained the situation, and then took the two empty coffee cups out of the room, holding the bottom of each cup.

Upon leaving the room, Elion immediately placed the two cups into a sample bag and handed it to Cameron, who was waiting outside.

Cameron, looking completely bewildered, took the sample bag from Elion's hand and asked, "Do you still plan to go through with this even if they didn't admit anything after what you said?"

"Yes, each of the cups belongs to the boy's father and mother. I need you to compare their DNA sequence with Dan's."

Cameron, still wearing a confused expression, said, "Why would we do that? We already know they're Dan's family; they're his biological parents."

Elion looked at Dan's parents, who were too worried to pay attention to them inside the room, and quickly whispered, "No, they aren't."

"Dan was adopted, and it's very likely that his symptoms are hereditary, so we need evidence."

"Don't worry. If the test shows that they really are his biological parents, I'll pay the cost, and they'll never know we ran the test. But if they aren't, we'll know where to investigate."

"That's very risky. You could get into trouble if the hospital finds out."

"This is what House wants you to do. Come on, Cameron, we shouldn't disobey the boss," Elion reminded her with a gentle smile.
