Chapter 77 - Chapter 76 — “A Door Opens While Others Are Away”

Year: X784

Season: Early Summer

Location: Magnolia · Fairy Tail Guild Hall

Age: Lucy Heartfilia — 17

---

Lucy

The doors were bigger than Lucy remembered.

Not taller—louder.

She stood at the edge of Magnolia's main street, staring up at the familiar symbol carved into the wood. The fairy emblem gleamed faintly in the sun, paint chipped, edges worn smooth by years of hands slamming it open and shut.

This is it.

No escort this time.

No borrowed courage.

Just her.

Lucy touched the pendant beneath her blouse—yellow and blue cosmos flowers, twined together—and exhaled.

"Okay," she whispered. "Running for real."

She pushed the doors open.

---

Chaos, Immediately

The first thing that hit her was noise.

Laughter exploded from the left. A table shattered on the right. Someone yelled something about stealing food, someone else yelled back try me, and a familiar pink-haired mage was already mid-air—

"NAAATSU, PUT HIM DOWN—!"

Too late.

Gray slid across the floor in a trail of ice and curses, slamming into the bar. Mugs flew. Mira ducked with practiced ease, smiling serenely as she caught a bottle mid-fall and set it back upright.

Lucy froze in the doorway.

"…It's worse than last time," she muttered.

"HEY! LUCY!"

Natsu spotted her instantly, waving both arms like he was afraid she'd vanish again. "You made it!"

Happy fluttered over her head. "Aye! You're back!"

Lucy laughed despite herself, stepping inside as the doors swung shut behind her. The sound swallowed her whole—this was Fairy Tail. Loud. Warm. Unapologetically alive.

"Welcome back," Mira said gently, appearing beside her with a towel over her shoulder. Her eyes softened in recognition. "You visited before, right? With Ren."

Lucy nodded. "A day. Years ago."

"And now?" Mira tilted her head.

Lucy straightened. "Now I want to join."

Guild POV — Reactions

The room slowed—just a little.

Not silence. Fairy Tail never did silence. But attention shifted, curious eyes turning toward the blonde girl standing by the bar, hands clenched tight around her bag strap.

Macarov hopped down from his seat, peering up at her. "Name?"

"Lucy Heartfilia," she said clearly. "Celestial Spirit Mage."

Several heads snapped up.

"Celestial?" someone muttered.

Natsu grinned. "She's strong."

Lucy shot him a look. "Don't oversell."

Macarov studied her for a long moment. Then—he smiled.

"Anyone vouching for her?"

Natsu raised his hand immediately. "Me."

"So does Ren," Mira added easily, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Lucy's heart skipped.

Macarov's brows rose. "Oh? Then that settles it."

He stamped the guild mark onto her hand—warm, tingling, real.

Lucy stared at it, breath caught in her throat.

"I'm… really in?"

"Welcome to Fairy Tail," Macarov said.

The guild erupted.

Cheers, whistles, immediate attempts to drag her into drinking contests she very clearly declined. Someone shoved food into her hands. Happy perched on her shoulder like he'd always belonged there.

Lucy laughed until her sides hurt.

---

Lucy (quiet moment)

Later—somehow—she found herself sitting at a table, feet dangling, watching chaos swirl around her.

Natsu and Gray were at it again. Cana laughed from the bar, cards spread like a fan. Mira moved through it all like a calm tide, patching, smiling, redirecting.

Ren isn't here.

The thought surprised her with its weight.

"He's out on a mission," Mira said softly, sitting beside her as if she'd heard Lucy's thoughts. "Erza too. S-class."

Lucy nodded. "Figures."

She traced the guild mark on her hand. I wanted him to see this.

But then she smiled.

He told me to come. That was enough.

---

Elsewhere — On the Road

Ren paused mid-step, hand lifting unconsciously to his chest.

Erza noticed instantly. "You felt it."

"…Yeah," Ren said quietly. A smile tugged at his mouth before he could stop it. "She's here."

Erza crossed her arms, satisfied. "Good. About time."

---

Back at the Guild

Lucy stood at the window as the sun dipped low, Magnolia glowing gold.

She was tired. Overwhelmed. Happy in a way that felt frighteningly fragile.

Happy floated beside her. "You gonna be okay without Ren here today?"

Lucy smiled. "Yeah."

She held up the pendant, light catching on the two flowers. "He already walked me to the door. The rest… I can do."

Behind her, Fairy Tail roared with life.

Ahead of her—something new waited.

And somewhere out there, Ren would come home and see that the promise he'd made years ago had finally, truly been answered.

The door had opened.

Lucy had stepped through.
