Chapter 66 - Chapter 66 — A Place Not Yet Named

Year X780 · Late Summer

Split POV — Ren · Erza · Mira · Juvia · Fairy Tail Guild

---

Ren

Ren didn't go to the guild that morning.

The absence felt strange—like skipping a heartbeat—but it was necessary.

Magnolia was quieter beyond the main streets. The laughter faded, the magic thinned, replaced by birdsong and the steady crunch of gravel underfoot. Ren walked with his hands in his pockets, eyes sharp, posture relaxed but alert.

Across from him, a balding man in a neat vest wiped sweat from his brow.

"So… you're sure about this?" the man asked again, glancing down at Ren. "You're… young."

Ren smiled politely. "I'm sure."

The man—Mr. Belno, licensed real-estate agent of Magnolia—sighed. "Well. The Guild Master already vouched for you, so my job is just to show you the land."

They crested a small hill.

And Ren stopped.

Below them stretched a wide open space near the lake—water glinting under the sun, trees lining the edges like quiet sentinels. The air felt still. Not dead. Peaceful.

A place where breathing would come easily.

A place where swords could be swung without breaking tables.

A place where arguments wouldn't shake the walls of the guild.

"…Here," Ren said softly.

Mr. Belno blinked. "You haven't even seen the others yet."

Ren shook his head. "I don't need to."

This is it.

He could already see it—

A house big enough that no one felt crowded.

A garden where Mira could sit in the sun.

A training hall where Erza could push herself without restraint.

Rooms with doors that could be closed when silence was needed.

A place that wasn't borrowed.

A place that was theirs.

---

Erza

"Ren's not here."

Erza said it flatly, arms crossed, eyes scanning the guild hall as if Ren might suddenly appear if she stared hard enough.

Mira glanced up from behind the bar. "He said he had something to do."

Erza frowned. "…He didn't say what."

That bothered her more than she wanted to admit.

Ren wasn't secretive. Quiet, yes. Reserved. But not evasive.

She watched the doors again.

He should be here.

---

Juvia

Juvia noticed first.

Ren's usual chair—empty.

His cup—untouched.

"…Ren is not present today," Juvia murmured, fingers tightening around her mug.

Cana tilted her head. "Huh. You're right."

Juvia tried to smile. "He said he had personal matters."

But her rain didn't come.

Not yet.

Still—something tugged at her chest.

Why does Juvia feel restless…?

---

Ren

"Paperwork will take time," Mr. Belno said carefully. "And… legally, the land will need to be under an adult's name."

Ren nodded. "I've already arranged that."

They met the Guild Master at noon.

Makarov listened quietly as Ren explained—every detail, every intention. He didn't interrupt once.

When Ren finished, the old man leaned back, pipe unlit, eyes sharp beneath heavy brows.

"…You're planning a home," Makarov said.

Ren hesitated.

"…Yes."

"For yourself?"

Ren shook his head immediately. "No."

Makarov smiled—not kindly. Proudly.

"Then I'll hold the land in the guild's name until you're of age," he said. "But understand this—once you start, there's no turning back. You'll spend everything."

Ren met his gaze without flinching. "I know."

Makarov laughed. "Brats like you always do."

The papers were signed.

Coin by coin, Ren emptied years of mission rewards, item sales, savings earned quietly and patiently.

When it was done, his pouch felt lighter than it ever had.

And his chest felt full.

---

Mira

Mira wiped down the counter for the third time.

"…He's really late," she murmured.

Erza glanced at her. "You're worried too."

Mira smiled sheepishly. "Is it that obvious?"

"He's… steady," Erza said after a moment. "When he's not around, it's noticeable."

Mira's smile softened. "…Yeah."

Neither of them realized they were thinking the same thing.

If Ren disappeared… this place would feel different.

---

Ren

The architect was enthusiastic.

"You want a training hall inside the property?"

"Yes."

"A garden?"

"Yes."

"How many rooms?"

"…More than enough."

The man laughed. "Planning for a family?"

Ren paused.

"…Planning for people."

They finalized the design as the sun dipped low.

A large wooden house, stone foundation. Wide windows. A wraparound porch facing the lake. The training hall slightly separated—thick walls, reinforced floors.

Quiet.

Strong.

Enduring.

Ren walked the empty land one last time as evening settled.

He stood at the center of what would someday be a living room and closed his eyes.

This is where we'll rest.

---

Guild — Evening

Fairy Tail was loud again.

Natsu and Gray were fighting. Happy was cheering. Cana was laughing too hard.

Juvia watched the door.

Erza pretended not to.

Mira poured drinks, her eyes flicking there every few seconds.

Finally—

The door opened.

Ren stepped in, dusty, tired, calm.

Three pairs of eyes locked onto him instantly.

"…You're late," Erza said.

Ren smiled. "Sorry."

Mira leaned forward. "Everything okay?"

"Yes."

Juvia hesitated—then nodded. "…Juvia is glad."

Ren met her eyes for half a second longer than usual.

"I'll explain someday," he said quietly. "Just… not yet."

Something in his voice made them all accept it.

For now.

From the balcony, Makarov watched the kids below and smiled around his pipe.

They don't know it yet, he thought, but he's already building their future.

Outside Magnolia, near the silent lake, the land waited.

Empty.

And full of promise.
