Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 - Laughter That Shakes the Guild

Year X777, Early Summer

Location: Fairy Tail Guildhall, Magnolia Town

Age:

Erza Scarlet — 12

Ren — 12

Mira Jane Strauss — 12

---

Morning sunlight poured through the tall windows of the Fairy Tail guildhall, turning dust motes into tiny sparks that danced in the air. The building was already alive—chairs scraping, mugs clanking, laughter echoing like it always did. Chaos, warm and familiar.

Ren leaned back in his chair, hands folded behind his head, eyes half-lidded as he watched the madness unfold.

Yeah… this is it, he thought, lips curling into a soft smile. This is Fairy Tail.

At the center of it all—

"WHY did you touch my armor?!" Erza's voice rang out like a blade drawn from its sheath.

Mira slammed her palms on the table, leaning forward with a feral grin. "Because you left it there, Queenie. If you don't want people touching your stuff, don't act like you own the place!"

"I DO own this place—emotionally!"

"That's not a thing!"

"It is to me!"

Ren sighed dramatically. "Ah yes," he muttered, loud enough for nearby guild members to hear, "the daily ritual. Sunrise, breakfast, and Erza and Mira trying to kill each other."

Gray, shirtless as usual, glanced over. "They gonna actually fight today?"

"Give it five minutes," Ren replied cheerfully.

Erza's Requip magic flickered instinctively—steel plates shimmering into existence—while Mira cracked her knuckles, a strange, sharp rhythm to her breathing.

That breathing… Ren noted. She's refined it more.

Mira's chest rose and fell in a deliberate cadence—short inhale, sharp exhale.

Beast Breathing — First Form (Incomplete): Feral Pulse

A pressure rolled outward, subtle but heavy, like a predator entering the room.

Guild members froze.

Then—

"NOT IN THE GUILDHALL!" Makarov roared from the bar, slamming his mug down.

Both girls froze instantly.

"…Sorry," Erza and Mira said in perfect unison.

Ren burst out laughing.

---

Later, as the chaos shifted to something more… controlled, Ren stood near the request board, reading missions while Erza stood beside him, arms crossed.

"You're smiling again," Erza said, eyes narrowing slightly. "That usually means you're planning something stupid."

Ren placed a hand over his chest, feigning offense. "Erza, my dear Fairy Queen, when have I ever planned something stupid?"

She stared at him.

"…Do you want the list in chronological order or by injury severity?"

Ren laughed softly. "See? That's why I like you. Honest. Brutal. Beautiful."

Erza's face turned red instantly. "R-Ren! Don't say things like that so casually!"

From behind them, Mira leaned in with a grin sharp enough to cut glass. "Oho? Calling her beautiful now? Careful, Sun Swordsman. You flirt like that with everyone."

Ren tilted his head toward Mira, sunlight catching in his crimson eyes. "Only with girls who can kill me."

Mira blinked.

Then laughed—bright, wild, unapologetic. "You're impossible."

And he knows it, Erza thought, irritated—and oddly flustered.

---

That afternoon, the trio took a low-rank solo mission—clearing monsters near Magnolia's outskirts. Easy. Relaxed. Almost… fun.

The forest hummed with cicadas.

Ren walked ahead, wooden practice sword resting on his shoulder, Total Concentration Breathing flowing constantly through his body—Complete Sun and Moon Breathing, seamless, silent.

Constant breathing feels… normal now, he reflected. Like breathing itself.

Behind him, Erza adjusted her armor, eyes sharp, posture regal even in the woods.

Mira stretched, inhaling deeply.

"Beast Breathing… Second Form," she murmured, grinning. "Let's see how this goes."

The monsters never stood a chance.

Steel flashed. Sunlight curved through the air like a crescent blade. Mira moved like a storm—wild, instinctive, laughing as she fought.

When it was over, the forest was quiet again.

Erza wiped her blade clean. "Your control improved, Mira."

Mira blinked. "…You noticed?"

Ren smiled. "Of course she did. She notices everything."

Erza huffed. "Don't make it weird."

Ren stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Too late."

Both girls groaned.

---

Evening returned them to the guildhall—louder than ever.

Natsu had arrived recently, and the energy had doubled. He was already picking a fight with Gray, while Happy cheered like it was a festival.

Ren leaned against the bar, sipping tea.

Mira joined him, resting her chin on her hand. "You really don't drink much alcohol."

Ren shrugged. "Sun Breathing hates sloppy control."

Erza approached, arms full of documents. "Mission reports. Done."

Ren looked between them, eyes warm.

Funny, he thought. In my last life, I was alone. Here… I'm surrounded.

He grinned. "You know, if this keeps up, people are going to start rumors."

Mira smirked. "Oh, they already have."

Erza choked. "WHAT?"

Gray leaned over from the next table. "Guild bet says Ren dies first—either by S-class mission or getting punched by one of you."

Ren laughed, unbothered. "Worth it."

Erza stared at him, then sighed—softly this time. "You're… really annoying."

He met her gaze, serious for just a moment. "And you're really important to me."

Silence.

Then Mira groaned loudly. "UGH. There it is. I'm leaving before I throw up."

Erza's face went crimson. "REN!"

He just smiled—sunlight in human form.

Above them, the Fairy Tail emblem glowed faintly in the evening light.

Laughter shook the guildhall.

And for once—

Fate felt light.
