Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 — Where Magic Laughs

Year X772 — Early Spring

Location: Magnolia Town → Fairy Tail Guild Hall

Age: Ren (7) | Erza (7)

---

Magnolia didn't whisper.

It laughed.

Ren felt it the moment they crossed the last rise and the town spread out below them—red roofs, winding streets, the river catching sunlight like scattered coins. Magic hummed openly here, unashamed and loud, brushing against his senses with the ease of a crowd that didn't care who noticed.

> This place doesn't hide. It invites.

Erza stopped beside him, eyes wide.

"…It's huge."

"…And alive," Ren added softly.

They descended together, packs light, steps steady. People passed them without staring too long—merchants arguing cheerfully, mages showing off small tricks, laughter spilling from open windows.

No fear.

No measuring eyes.

Just noise.

Erza exhaled a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "…I like it already."

Ren smiled. "…Me too."

They followed the sound.

You couldn't miss Fairy Tail. The building stood proud and scarred, like it had survived arguments with gods and laughed about it afterward. Music and shouting poured from within, punctuated by the unmistakable sound of something breaking.

Erza stared. "…Is it supposed to sound like that."

Ren tilted his head, listening to the chaotic harmony.

"…I think," he said, "…it's supposed to sound exactly like that."

They stepped inside.

---

The guild hall exploded into view—long tables, boisterous mages, magic flaring without apology. Someone was on fire (voluntarily). Someone else was upside down. A man with spiky pink hair argued loudly with a blue cat about fish.

Ren froze.

> So this is Fairy Tail.

Erza's eyes shone.

"…This," she whispered, "…is amazing."

They took three steps in.

A chair flew past Ren's head and shattered against the wall.

"…WELCOME!" someone yelled.

Ren blinked.

"…Is that normal."

"…I hope so," Erza said, grinning.

A massive man with a mustache noticed them then. His presence hit like a warm hammer—heavy, confident, kind.

"Well now," Makarov said, eyes softening as they landed on the two children. "You two look like you walked a long way."

Ren bowed politely. "…We did, sir."

Erza straightened. "…We want to join."

The guild hall went quiet.

Not hostile.

Curious.

Makarov studied them for a long moment, gaze sharp beneath the warmth.

"…That's a big thing to ask," he said gently. "Why Fairy Tail."

Ren didn't rush.

> Don't sell. Don't hide. Just be honest.

"…Because this place feels loud enough," he said, "…that no one gets taken quietly."

Silence lingered.

Then Makarov laughed—a deep, booming sound that shook the hall.

"HAH! I like that answer."

He crouched to their level. "Names?"

"…Ren."

"…Erza."

A few nearby mages perked up at that.

"…Strong names," Makarov said. "Show me."

---

They didn't fight.

They demonstrated.

Ren stepped forward, calm as breathing. He placed his palm against a cracked support beam near the wall.

"…May I," he asked.

Makarov nodded, intrigued.

Ren focused—not on power, but care. The enchantment flowed, precise and warm. The beam shimmered, cracks knitting together, structure reinforced far beyond its original state.

The hall went silent again—this time with awe.

"…That's not ordinary enchantment," Makarov murmured.

Erza stepped up next.

She inhaled.

In.

Out.

Armor flared into existence—clean, crimson-accented steel forming around her with knightly precision. Not heavy. Not clumsy.

Resolute.

She raised her sword and saluted.

The silence shattered.

"WHOA!"

"A KID DID THAT?!"

"THAT ARMOR—!"

Makarov's eyes gleamed.

"…You've trained," he said quietly.

"…Yes," Ren replied. "…And we'll keep training."

The master straightened.

"Well then," he declared, voice carrying. "Welcome to Fairy Tail!"

Cheers erupted. Someone lifted Erza onto a table. Someone else shoved a drink into Ren's hand before realizing his age and swapping it for juice with a laugh.

The mark was pressed to their hands—warm, proud.

Ren stared at it.

> We made it.

---

Later—much later—they sat on the guild hall steps, the noise behind them turning from overwhelming to comforting.

Erza swung her legs. "…Did you see their faces."

Ren chuckled. "…Hard to miss."

"…They didn't look scared."

"…No."

She leaned back on her hands, smiling up at the sky.

"…We belong here," she said, matter-of-fact.

Ren felt it settle in his chest.

"…Yes," he agreed.

Something shifted then.

Not outside.

Inside.

> [Great Sage: Limitation parameters—removed.]

Ren's breath caught.

The presence he'd always felt—patient, careful—expanded. Not louder. Clearer. Boundaries dissolving like mist under sunlight.

Knowledge didn't flood him.

Understanding aligned.

> [Great Sage: Status—Integrated. Advisory—Live.]

Ren laughed softly.

> Finally.

"…What," Erza asked, glancing over.

"…Nothing," he said. "…Just… feeling lighter."

She smiled. "…Good. You should."

They sat there as the sun dipped low, Fairy Tail's laughter spilling into the street like a promise.

Ren touched the guild mark.

> No more running. No more hiding.

The chains of fate had found them once.

Now—

They had found a family loud enough to break them.
