I am Therys, owner of the Cinderwell Springs, the finest hot spring establishment in all of Luminara.
That's not pride speaking—it's fact. My family has run this inn for four generations. My ancestors settled in this territory ages ago when it was still developing, when Luminara was nothing more than a few buildings clustered around the volcanic springs. They saw potential where others saw only steam and stone. Through decades of hard work and unwavering dedication to hospitality, they built this place into what it is today. And I inherited that legacy.
We don't simply provide lodging. We offer an experience. Every detail matters, from the temperature of the tea to the arrangement of flowers in the guest rooms. Our reputation extends across the entire continent. We've hosted royalty, dignitaries, merchant princes, and legendary adventurers. Some of the most powerful figures in the world have soaked in our springs and slept in our beds.
Our establishment is so renowned that we sometimes have to navigate difficult conversations to deny bookings from important figures. Just last month, I had to politely refuse a duke from the eastern territories. The week before, a wealthy merchant consortium offered triple our usual rates for exclusive access. I declined both.
So when Demon Lord Kaelith himself walks through my door and requests a private meeting, I know something extraordinary is happening.
He doesn't waste time with pleasantries.
[Kaelith] "I need you to cancel all bookings for the next week. Starting tomorrow."
I blink. Cancel all bookings? We're fully reserved for the next three months.
[Therys] "My Lord, may I ask the reason?"
[Kaelith] "A group of travelers will be arriving tomorrow. They require complete privacy and your finest service."
Who are these people that the Demon Lord himself is making arrangements? That we need to cancel everything?
Chancellor Velira steps forward, her amber eyes meeting mine with unusual intensity.
[Velira] "The person leading the group is named Wright. He's a highly important figure. He leads the divine mission to feed the fleeing Aldencrest population."
Aldencrest. Good riddance to that awful kingdom. Their nobles were insufferable to deal with. Entitled, demanding, never satisfied. I once had an Aldencrest countess complain that the mountain view from her window wasn't impressive enough. The mountain view. As if I could move mountains to suit her preferences.
But a divine mission? That's significant.
[Velira] "His Holiness Pope Orell will also be joining the group."
I straighten immediately. The Pope himself?
[Therys] "Of course, my Lord. We'll reserve the entire inn. Consider it done."
[Kaelith] "Spare no expense. Whatever they need, provide it. I'll cover all costs personally."
Whatever they need. The Demon Lord will cover costs. This isn't just important. This is historic.
The moment they leave, I start planning.
---
The day of their arrival comes too quickly and not quickly enough.
Pope Orell arrives early in the afternoon. I greet him personally at the entrance, bowing deeply.
[Therys] "Your Holiness, welcome to Cinderwell Springs. It's an honor to host you."
[Orell] "The honor is mine, Madame Therys. I've heard wonderful things about this establishment."
He's exactly as I imagined. Elderly, gentle, with kind eyes that seem to see more than they should. Chancellor Velira accompanies him, and I begin the tour.
I show them the communal bathing areas first. The Pope makes appreciative sounds at each pool, commenting on the clarity of the water and the craftsmanship of the stonework. We move through the Sunstone Heat Chamber, the Mistveil Grottos, and I'm midway through explaining the enchantments in the Stillwind Sanctuaries when Chancellor Velira's expression changes.
[Velira] "I've just received a message from the Demon Lord. The group has arrived. We need to go."
[Orell] "Oh! Already? Wonderful!"
His Holiness actually looks excited. He's practically beaming as he excuses himself, moving with surprising speed for someone his age.
Who is this Wright person that even the Pope is eager to greet him?
I turn to my staff immediately.
[Therys] "Everyone, positions. They're here."
We spent all of yesterday cleaning. Every surface was scrubbed, every piece of fabric washed, every window polished until it gleamed. There's not a single speck of dust anywhere. Nothing is out of place.
I secured the best employees I have for massages and body treatments. The enchanters double-checked every rune in every room. Some of them were on vacation, but I called them back, offering triple their usual rate. The Demon Lord said he'd cover all expenses, so I'm going all out.
The kitchen staff is prepared for anything. I gave them carte blanche to create whatever dishes they think appropriate for guests of this caliber.
We will give them an experience they'll remember for decades.
Then the group arrives.
I position myself at the entrance, hands folded, professional smile in place.
And I see him. Wright.
He's young. Dark-haired. Unremarkable features, relaxed posture. He looks so ordinary. This is the important guest? The one leading a divine mission?
But then I look at the others in his group, and everything shifts.
High Elves. Not just any high elves. These are the legendary ones. That's Eldrin. I recognize him from the descriptions I've heard. He's a legendary figure, leader of an extremely powerful tribe of High Elves that supposedly lives in the deepest parts of the ancient forests.
And those two. That's Lucien and Seraphina. The Angel and Vampire couple who conquered multiple high-level dungeons in their early years as adventurers. They were part of Grivers, a legendary adventuring group that's still spoken about to this day. I have a painting of them hanging in my private study. What are they doing here?
There's a spirit floating around, darting back and forth between people. She's not like the minor spirits that sometimes drift through the city. She's pronounced, solid, clearly visible. That's a high elemental at the very least.
There are also three young people. Teenagers, perhaps? They look excited, talking animatedly with each other.
And then there's the blue-haired woman.
She's beautiful. Absolutely breathtaking. Her features are elegant, her bearing regal. Something about her feels familiar, like I've seen her somewhere before, but I can't place where.
Demon Lord Kaelith is guiding them toward me personally. He's acting like their guide. Why? He's the Demon Lord. Shouldn't he be more regal? More distant?
Also, where's the Pope? I thought he went to greet them.
Oh. There he is. On his knees in the middle of the plaza, crying.
What.
I don't have time to process that because the Demon Lord is introducing me.
[Kaelith] "This is Madame Therys, the owner of Cinderwell Springs. She'll be taking care of you during your stay."
I bow respectfully, years of training keeping my movements smooth and professional.
[Therys] "Welcome to Cinderwell Springs. It is our honor to host you."
The Demon Lord leans close, his voice dropping to a whisper meant only for my ears.
[Kaelith] "The blue-haired woman is the Goddess. The Goddess. Do you understand?"
My mind goes blank.
The Goddess.
THE Goddess.
The one who created this entire world. The one worshipped by everyone across every nation. She's here. In my inn.
I can't keep up. My hands are shaking. My heart is racing. This is beyond anything I could have imagined.
But then something else kicks in. Years and years of experience. The hospitality ingrained in me from my ancestors' blood. The training that's been passed down through four generations.
I take a breath. Center myself. Find my composure.
The customers come first. There's no time to be surprised.
[Therys] "Please, allow me to show you around."
My voice is steady. Professional. Warm.
I give them the tour. I show them the main hall, the corridors, the bathing areas. I explain the facilities, the services, the amenities. I'm on autopilot, letting decades of practice carry me through.
The Goddess listens politely. She doesn't act divine. She acts normal. Tired, even. Like someone who just wants to relax.
Wright asks questions. Simple ones. About the pools, about the treatments. He seems genuinely interested in a practical way, not in the reverent way most people would if they knew who was with them.
The teenagers are excited about everything. The high elves are appreciative. Seraphina and Lucien exchange quiet comments. The spirit keeps darting around, examining everything with obvious delight.
Then there's the other woman. The one who tried to claim our main reception area as her bedroom. I had to politely but firmly redirect her to an actual room. She flopped onto every piece of furniture we passed like she was testing mattresses. At one point, she asked if we could move a massage table into the corridor because the walk to the treatment room was "too far." Absolutely exhausting to deal with.
I show them to their accommodations. The suites and rooms. Through it all, I maintain perfect composure.
After the tour, I serve them lunch. The kitchen staff has outdone themselves. Everything is perfect, beautifully presented, flawlessly executed.
As they are eating, I gather my staff for an emergency meeting.
They crowd into the main office, looking concerned. Emergency meetings are rare.
[Therys] "I need to tell you something. And I need you all to listen very carefully."
I take a breath.
[Therys] "The blue-haired woman is the Goddess. The Goddess who created this world."
Silence.
Then everyone starts talking at once.
[Therys] "Quiet!"
They fall silent.
[Therys] "The man named Wright leads the group. He's the one conducting the divine mission to feed the Aldencrest refugees. Eldrin, the legendary high elf, is with them. So are Seraphina and Lucien from the legendary adventuring group Grivers."
I look around at each of them.
[Therys] "This is the most important group of guests we have ever hosted. Possibly the most important group of guests any inn has ever hosted. We need to be professional. Provide the best service. Don't interfere with them too much, but be available to help guide them whenever needed."
I pause, letting that sink in.
[Therys] "This is going to be huge for our inn. Being able to say that the Goddess herself has graced us with a visit? That's massive. We'll be bragging about this for decades to come. This inn will be the best inn in the entire world. The one the Goddess chose to visit."
I can see the realization dawning on their faces. The magnitude of what this means.
[Therys] "So let's do this right. Let's show them why Cinderwell Springs is the finest establishment in all of Luminara."
I put my hand out, palm down. One by one, they stack their hands on top of mine.
[Therys] "Let's do this!"
[All] "Let's do this!"
We raise our hands together, and I feel a surge of pride. This is my team. My family. We're going to make this perfect.
---
It's late at night now. The first day is complete.
I gather my staff again, this time to thank them. They've been incredible. Professional, attentive, perfect in every way.
[Therys] "You were all amazing today. Truly. I'm so proud of every single one of you. Adjusting with such grace when… additional guests appeared. That composure is what sets us apart."
They're smiling, tired but satisfied.
[Therys] "I'm not sure how long they'll be staying, but if today was any indication, we can handle this. We've got this."
There are nods of agreement. We're doing this. It's happening. We're successfully navigating this incredible, terrifying, wonderful situation with professionalism and grace.
Then one of the junior staff members raises their hand hesitantly.
[Young Staff Member] "Madame Therys? I saw the Goddess using one of the pools earlier. Would it be alright if I took some of that water home? Just a small vial?"
[Therys] "What."
The word comes out flat.
[Young Staff Member] "I just thought it would be blessed, and..."
[Therys] "You want to take water the Goddess bathed in? Do you want divine punishment? What is wrong with you?"
The staff member shrinks back, looking mortified.
[Therys] "No one, and I mean no one, is to take anything from this inn as a souvenir of the Goddess's visit. No water, no towels, no pillows, nothing. We are professionals, not relic hunters. Do you understand?"
[All] "Yes, Madame Therys."
I pinch the bridge of my nose, feeling a headache forming.
[Therys] "Dismissed. Get some rest. Tomorrow is another day."
They file out, and I'm left alone in my office.
I sink into my chair and finally let myself react.
The Goddess is in my inn.
The Goddess. In my inn.
I start laughing. I can't help it. It's absurd. It's wonderful. It's terrifying. My ancestors would be so proud.
And now I have to guard against my own staff trying to steal bathwater.
This is going to be a very long week.
