We step through the massive archway into darkness.
For a moment, everything is black. Then our eyes adjust, and the interior of the ruins reveals itself.
The entrance hall is vast. The ceiling stretches up into shadows, easily three stories high, supported by massive pillars carved from the same dark stone as the outside. Each pillar is covered in that shifting script, the letters seeming to writhe and reform when caught in peripheral vision. The floor is smooth stone, worn in places by countless footsteps from an age long past.
Light filters in above from somewhere. Cracks in the ceiling, perhaps, or some ancient enchantment that still functions. It's dim, but enough to see in front. The air is cool and still, carrying the faint scent of stone and earth and something else. Something old.
Our footsteps echo as we move deeper inside.
The walls are lined with intricate carvings. Scenes of people engaged in activities I can't quite make out. Figures standing before altars, hands raised. Others wielding weapons against creatures that look like the monsters from outside, but twisted and off. And throughout it all, that same geometric pattern, weaving between the scenes like a thread connecting everything.
[Angel 1] "Remarkable preservation."
[Angel 2] "The structural integrity is incredible for something this old."
We continue forward, and the entrance hall opens into a wider space.
It's clearly a waiting area of some kind. Stone benches line the walls, carved from the same dark material as everything else. In the center of the room sits a large counter, smooth and flat, like a reception desk. Behind it, the wall is covered in more of those shifting symbols, arranged in neat rows and columns. Almost like a list or registry.
Tables are scattered throughout the space, some overturned, others still standing as if waiting for occupants who will never return.
[Lucien] "This layout... it's familiar."
He walks around the space slowly, examining everything with professional interest. The other angels spread out, checking different areas.
On the far side of the room, there's a large door. Heavy and reinforced, made of dark metal rather than stone. Or at least, it was reinforced.
Now it's broken.
The metal is bent outward, twisted and torn as if something massive had burst through from the inside. The edges are jagged, and deep gouges mark the stone around the doorframe. Claw marks, maybe, or something worse.
Whatever broke through this door had been locked in. And it had gotten out.
An unusual feeling settles over me.
[Wright] "That doesn't look good."
Lucien approaches the door, running his hand along the bent metal without touching the jagged edges.
[Lucien] "The damage is old. Whatever did this happened a long time ago."
[Angel 3] "The door was designed to seal from the outside. Heavy locking mechanisms, reinforced structure."
[Angel 4] "This waiting area, the counter, the layout... it's similar to modern dungeon entrances."
Lucien straightens, his expression shifting to one of realization.
[Lucien] "Could this be a dungeon entrance? Was this a lost dungeon city?"
A dungeon. The word sends a thrill through me. That's straight out of a manga! Labyrinths filled with monsters and treasure. I can feel my excitement building.
Takeshi's eyes are practically glowing.
[Takeshi] "A real dungeon?!"
Aiko looks less thrilled, but she's putting on a brave face.
[Wright] "What exactly are dungeons?"
Lucien and Sylphaeris exchange glances.
[Lucien] "Dungeons are locations where dense mana and miasma gather and concentrate. The energy creates an environment where monsters are born and thrive."
[Sylphaeris] "They're essentially breeding grounds for magical creatures. The deeper you go, the stronger the monsters become."
[Lucien] "That would explain why there are so many high-level monsters in this forest."
[Sylphaeris] "Perhaps. Some of the monsters may have escaped this place but dungeons also attract monsters from the surrounding areas. The dense energy draws them in."
This is amazing. An actual dungeon, right here near the farm.
[Wright] "Let's keep going."
We move forward cautiously. Lucien takes the lead, his posture alert and ready. Sylphaeris and I bring up the rear, with the heroes and angels positioned in the middle.
Beyond the broken door, the structure changes dramatically.
We enter a labyrinthine corridor system. The passages are narrow. Wide enough for three people to walk abreast, but no more. The walls close in on both sides, smooth stone covered in more of those carved symbols. The ceiling lowers, creating an oppressive feeling of being enclosed.
The corridors branch and split, turning at sharp angles, doubling back on themselves. Without a map, getting lost would be trivially easy.
Every twenty feet or so, there are alcoves set into the walls. Some are empty. Others contain stone pedestals with nothing on them. Whatever had been displayed there long since removed or decayed to dust.
The light is dimmer here, filtering down from cracks and gaps in the ceiling far above. Shadows pool in corners and doorways, making it hard to see what lies ahead.
[Angel 2] "We should map our route."
Several angels pull out parchment and charcoal from Storage, immediately beginning to sketch the corridors as we move. They work with practiced efficiency, noting distances and angles with precision.
[Lucien] "Stay in formation. Follow my footsteps exactly, there may be traps. Don't touch the walls or step on any stones that look different from the others."
We continue deeper into the labyrinth.
The silence is heavy here. Our breathing seems loud in the enclosed space. Every footstep echoes, making it impossible to move quietly.
Then I hear it.
The soft padding of paws on stone. A low growl from somewhere ahead.
We round a corner and freeze.
A wolf stands in the corridor ahead of us. Large, easily the size of a horse, with thick fur that shimmers with frost. Its breath comes out in visible puffs of cold air, and its eyes glow with an icy blue light.
I've seen these before in the forest.
[Wright] "Frostfang Wolf. So they really do come from here."
But something's different about this one.
It sees me. Locks eyes with me directly.
And it doesn't run.
[Wright] "It's not running."
I can't keep the shock out of my voice. Every monster I've encountered has fled immediately. But this one holds its ground, hackles raised, lips pulled back to reveal massive fangs.
[Sylphaeris] "The air here is saturated with energy. It's exciting the monsters, overriding their survival instincts. They'll attack regardless of the threat level."
Perfect. This is exactly what I needed.
[Wright] "Finally. My chance to level up."
I step forward, and the wolf charges.
It comes at me fast, fangs bared, claws scraping against stone. The corridor amplifies the sound of its approach—a rushing, snarling mass of fur and ice magic.
But to me, it's moving in slow motion.
I step to the side as it lunges, and the wolf's jaws snap closed on empty air. It's slow. So slow compared to what I can perceive.
As it passes, I throw a punch at its side.
My fist connects with a satisfying impact.
The wolf flies sideways, crashes through the stone wall like it's made of paper, and disappears into the room beyond. The wall crumbles, stone blocks tumbling to the floor with heavy thuds.
Silence. Well, that was anticlimactic.
I look back at the group. Everyone's staring at me with wide eyes. Even the angels look shocked.
Sylphaeris just giggles.
[Sylphaeris] "I forgot how strong you are."
Right. My stats are way higher than normal. I probably shouldn't be surprised by this outcome.
Then I hear it.
Ding!
A sound like a bell chiming, clear and bright in my mind. The sensation of something clicking into place.
I open my status screen and check. I leveled up. Ten times from a single monster to level 11. I look at my mana. 25,000!
[Wright] "It worked!"
The excitement bubbles up. This place is perfect. A dungeon right near the farm where I can actually fight monsters and level up. This is exactly what I needed.
[Wright] "Is it alright if I handle the monsters? I really need the experience."
[Takeshi] "That's not fair! I want to fight too!"
He looks genuinely upset.
[Wright] "Okay, okay. We'll take turns. But I'm stepping in if you're in danger."
[Takeshi] "Deal."
We continue through the labyrinth, moving deeper into the dungeon.
More monsters appear as we progress.
A Manahide Hare. Takeshi takes this one, his new fire magic proving effective against its speed.
An Emberfang Wolf, similar to the Frostfang but wreathed in flames instead of ice. I handle this one with a simple strike that sends it crashing into the wall just like its frozen cousin.
Then a Skytalon Griffin. A massive bird-like creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion, talons crackling with lightning. Aiko surprises everyone by blinding it with light magic long enough for Takeshi to finish it off.
With each fight, I feel that pleasant ding of leveling up. My mana pool grows larger, my stats increase. This is incredible.
The angels continue mapping as we fight, their parchment filling with an increasingly complex network of corridors and rooms.
Eventually, we reach a larger corridor that terminates in a massive door.
[Wright] "Boss room."
[Takeshi] "Boss room."
We say it at the same time, then look at each other and grin.
Lucien raises an eyebrow.
[Lucien] "Yes, though I'm curious how you both knew that."
Manga knowledge.
[Wright] "Just a feeling."
The door is different from the others. Larger, more ornate, covered in elaborate carvings that seem to pulse with faint light. It's not locked. It swings open at Lucien's touch, revealing the chamber beyond.
The boss room is enormous.
The ceiling soars up into darkness, and the space is circular, easily a hundred feet across. Stone pillars line the perimeter, each one carved with those shifting symbols that now seem to glow with a faint blue light.
In the center of the room, something massive stirs.
It unfolds itself from a crouch, rising to its full height. Easily fifteen feet tall, shaped vaguely like a man but made entirely of dark stone. Its body is covered in the same script that decorates the walls, the letters glowing red against the black surface. Where its eyes should be, there are empty sockets filled with flickering crimson light.
It has no mouth, but somehow I hear its voice. A grinding, rumbling sound that seems to come from the stone itself rather than any vocal cords.
I activate Appraisal.
---
[Appraisal]
Ruinkeeper Golem
Body formed from enchanted stone that repairs minor damage. Powered by concentrated mana core in the chest. Attacks with overwhelming physical strength and can channel energy through its fists to create shockwaves. Vulnerable to sustained damage that exceeds its repair capability.
---
Takeshi is already moving forward, practically vibrating with excitement.
[Takeshi] "Can I take this one? Please?"
[Wright] "Lucien, mind helping him out?"
[Lucien] "Of course."
They advance together. Lucien takes a defensive stance, shield held firm. Takeshi tightens his fists, fire magic crackling around his knuckles.
The golem moves first.
It brings both fists down in a massive overhead strike. Lucien intercepts with his shield, and the impact sends shockwaves through the room. The floor cracks beneath his feet, but he holds firm.
[Lucien] "Now!"
Takeshi darts in from the side, flames bursting to life around his clenched fists. He drives a heavy punch into the golem's leg. Stone explodes outward on impact, chunks breaking away to reveal the glowing energy beneath.
The golem swings a backhand at Takeshi, but Lucien is already there, shield intercepting the blow and deflecting it upward.
They work together with impressive coordination. Lucien absorbs the golem's attacks, his shield and armor taking punishment that would crush a normal person. Takeshi exploits every opening, his fire-enhanced strikes slamming into the construct again and again, cracking stone and tearing chunks from its body with raw force.
The golem tries to create distance, raising its fists to generate a shockwave, but Takeshi charges straight through it, releasing a blast of fire from his palms that staggers the construct. Lucien follows immediately, slamming his shield into the golem's center mass and driving it backward.
Takeshi sees his opening. He channels all his magic into his fists, flames roaring around his arms as heat distorts the air. With a shout, he launches himself forward and drives a blazing punch straight into the glowing core in the golem's chest.
The construct freezes. The red light in its eyes flickers once, twice, then goes dark. Cracks spread across its body from the point of impact, and with a sound like thunder, it collapses into rubble.
[Wright] "Well done!"
[Takeshi] "That was amazing!"
He's breathing hard, grinning widely. Aiko runs over to check if he's hurt, but he waves her off.
[Aiko] "You were incredible!"
Then, in the center of where the golem fell, light begins to gather. It swirls and coalesces, forming into a solid shape.
A treasure chest materializes, ornate and made of dark wood banded with silver.
[Sylphaeris] "When a floor boss is defeated, the dungeon generates rewards."
[Wright] "How does that work?"
[Sylphaeris] "The energy that sustained the boss gets repurposed. It's one of the fundamental mechanics of how dungeons operate."
Takeshi opens the chest eagerly.
Inside, there's hundreds of gold coins, gleaming in the dim light. And sitting on top of the gold is a ring. Simple silver band, but with a small blue stone set into it that pulses with soft light.
Lucien picks it up and examines it.
[Lucien] "Mana Reservoir Ring. It stores a small amount of mana that can be drawn on when needed. Useful for emergencies."
[Takeshi] "That's perfect for Aiko!"
He hands it to her, and she slips it onto her finger, looking pleased.
The gold gets divided up. a few coins for each person. Nice haul for a first floor boss.
Then, at the back of the room, a staircase appears. Stone steps descending into darkness, leading to the second floor.
[Wright] "Let's keep going."
