Chapter 14 - Fashion over books

"Show me." I said with narrowed eyes.

"No." Sarah pouted out her lower lip, her eyes scrunched up.

"Show me right now." I said and crossed my arms.

"No." She shook her head like a puppy.

"Right now, or else." I raised a brow, last warning and she knew it.

"Hmmm...fine!" She gave a frustrated growl and raised her hand before slapping it on my desk.

"Oh, it's not too bad." I said looking at what she'd put on my desk.

It was the weekend, and Sarah had stopped by to hang out. My mom was in town buying groceries and dad had gone to see his drinking friends. Right now we were in my room, I was sitting by my desk facing away from the window, and looking at Sarah.

"It's a D+!" She groaned in misery," Mom is so going to be like 'you need to study more, less trips to the clothes store and malls."

"Well she does have a point." I turned around and took the pop quiz paper we had written last week. It was geography, Mr Robinson had dropped it on us, but unlike some people, (Sarah included), I had actually been reading up on what we'd done last semester.

"You got a B+, don't rub it in." Sarah hopped onto my bed and punched it, sobbing like an infant throwing a tantrum. Only true friends could do something like this.

I watched her throw her tantrum patiently waiting for the conclusion, which would arrive any second.

"Maybe I really should study this once." She said sadly and I nodded my head sagely.

"Or maybe I just need a new outfit to boost me up too." I face palmed instantly.

"Studying would help more." I suggested, but I'd lost her. The gleam in her eyes could only be satisfied with a trip to -

"Let's go to the clothes store!" Sarah shouted excitedly.

"Okay." I accepted my fate.

...

"Okay so pink jumper with swan tail or red jumper with a single sash?" Sarah turned to me with a serious expression.

If only she was this serious all the time with her books, I thought dryly.

"Red over pink, you don't want to look like Barbie." I replied as I glanced around.

We were at a clothing's shop down town, the owner, a dark skinned woman in her forties who wore jeans and makeup for people in their twenties, had a good establishment. Affordable discounts that made it easy for us to buy stuff with our meager allowance. I mean I had $17 in my wallet right now and Sarah had $15 bucks.

Meaning, we couldn't buy everything we liked, but agreed on essential minimums. This did not stop Sarah from trying on everything that caught her fancy and after three years of this, both me and the owner have just accepted it.

Trying to get Sarah away from heels was like trying to get a piece of meat from a grizzly bear. You try it and see what would happen, I sighed contently as I saw her eyes catch a pair of grey stilettos, knowing this outing would be a while.

"Well well, if it isn't miss desperate and her little friend." A voice spoke up and we both felt a sick chill go down our spines.

"Cindy." I muttered with annoyance all over my face.

Cindy and her click were here, standing in the Jean section near us. I hadn't noticed her come in, or I would have signalled Sarah about it. Too late for that though and I quickly moved to Sarah's side.

"Hi Cindy." Sarah said with a calm smile.

"Cindy." I said simply. I would not let a smile appear on my face for this girl or her friends.

"So tell me what are you two doing here, on a date?" Cindy asked us.

"Hmmm" My mouth became a disgruntled line.

"No, just shopping." Sarah replied in a low voice.

"Whatever," Cindy turned around," Girls crop tops, Chino trousers and zipper jackets. Two , two , four."

Her friends moved away to their assignments and I raised my brow. Is that really necessary? I could tell that she was doing this infront us on purpose and my dislike compounded.

"You know Bradley is throwing a party next week." Cindy said with a sweet smile," It's going to be at his house, since his parents are going out of town."

"Oh, that sounds so cool." Sarah smiled back just as Cindy's smile became less sweet.

"It is, but too bad you're not going to be there. Oh well, better luck next time." Cindy flicked her hair and walked away.

"Okay that fucking does it, you bitch." I walked up to her and wrenched her purse away.

"Hey, give that back you thief!" She shouted at me.

"Apologize for being a bitch and I will." I hoisted it above my head, where she couldn't reach.

"Who do you think you are? Give me back my purse or I'll -"

"Don't care, apologize or I'll chug it out the window already." I swayed it towards one of the nearby windows.

"Lucas calm down." Sarah said softly but I would not. Cuss us and I'd take it, but being spiteful to my best friend was out of the question.

"Kassandra call the owner, this guy is crazy" one of Cindy's friends said and I realised that this was going down a bad path fast.

So I threw the purse out the window, grabbed Sarah's hand and we both raced out of there.

"Don't think this over, I'll get you back for this! Molly get my purse." Cindy's voice exited us out as we ran two blocks from there.

"Aww man, I didn't get those stilettos," Sarah sighed sadly," Also, what were you thinking?"

"She had it coming, I only wish I had thrown it somewhere other than into a bush. A bonfire would have been really good " I said and she chuckled.

"The look on her face was awesome. Best best friend moment ever!" Sarah hugged me," Thanks for sticking up for me, I'll do you next time."

"Promise?" I asked her.

"Promise to the moon and back." She swore.

Little did we know how deep that promise would be later.
