Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 — The Choice You Don’t Say Aloud

"Did you tell them anything?"

Aya's question still hung in the air.

Kuro looked at her.

The city lights reflected in her eyes, breaking into fragments. For a second, he wondered how many versions of her existed — the girl beside him, the girl in the mask, the girl inside his memories.

He opened his mouth.

And—

The world cut.

Morning.

Gray.

Clean.

The police station smelled like disinfectant and recycled air.

Kuro walked in without resistance this time.

No cuffs.

No escort.

The system already knew he would comply.

The black room welcomed him again.

Same dimensions.

Same silence.

Same feeling of being watched from behind walls that didn't exist.

Kuro sat.

Waited.

He didn't have to wait long.

The door opened.

She entered.

Same uniform.

Same calm presence.

The girl from the alley.

The one who remembered.

She sat across from him without ceremony.

"Well," she said, folding her hands. "Looks like you've made your decision."

Kuro studied her face.

"I didn't say anything."

She smiled slightly.

"You didn't have to."

She reached into her pocket and placed something on the table between them.

A small slip of paper.

"Name first," she said. "I never gave you that."

She tapped the paper.

Mira Hale.

"That's my number," she continued. "And my address."

Kuro blinked.

"Why?"

She leaned back.

"Because you helped me when no one else did," she said simply. "And because I know what it's like to be judged by a system that doesn't care why."

He hesitated.

"You're… letting me go?"

"For now," she replied.

"I'll overlook this."

Then her gaze sharpened.

"But next time I see you," she said, "and I'm in my uniform—"

Her voice lowered.

"This won't be pleasant."

Understanding clicked.

"You knew," he said quietly.

Mira nodded.

"The system monitors behavioral drift," she said. "Stress. Emotional instability. Attachment spikes."

She looked at him pointedly.

"You weren't as undecided as you thought."

Kuro exhaled.

"So this was never really about what I said."

"No," she agreed. "It was about what you felt."

He picked up the paper.

Entered the number.

Saved the address.

"Thank you," he said.

Not out of politeness.

Out of something deeper.

Mira stood.

"One more thing," she added.

He looked up.

"You're not invisible anymore," she said. "Be careful who you choose to be loyal to."

Then she left.

Outside, the city greeted him like nothing had changed.

Traffic flowed.

People laughed.

Screens advertised peace and order.

Kuro walked.

Hands in his pockets.

Heart heavy.

That evening, he stood alone in his room.

The system hummed quietly.

Aya's contact hovered in front of him.

He typed.

Paused.

Then sent.

Kuro:

They gave me two choices.

Three dots appeared.

He didn't wait.

Kuro:

I chose you.

The message sent.

The city didn't react.

The system didn't alarm.

Somewhere deep inside its logic, a future shifted.
