Chapter 8 - THE GUARDIAN WHO SHOULDN’T EXIST

The sky above the

Celestial Trial Academy

had not returned to normal.

Even hours after the Judgment Arena incident, the clouds remained unnaturally still—as if the heavens themselves were holding their breath ☁️

Kael Ashwyn stood alone on the outer terrace, hands resting on the cold marble railing.

His body still hurt.

Not the sharp pain of injury—

But the deep, hollow ache of something touched but not awakened.

⛓️

The seal on his chest pulsed once.

Slow.

Measured.

🌑 A King Who Refuses to Wake

Inside his soul, silence reigned.

Azrath Cain did not speak.

That worried Kael more than words.

"…Are you there?" Kael whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"Always," Azrath replied calmly.

"I am simply… listening."

Kael frowned.

"To what?"

"Fear," Azrath said.

"From beings who call themselves eternal."

Kael exhaled.

"…Did Heaven really make a mistake?"

Azrath's voice carried the faintest hint of amusement 😈

"They mistook control for understanding."

"Kings have died for less."

👁️ Heaven Decides 👁️

Far above mortal sight—

Within a realm of rotating sigils and golden void—

Heaven convened.

Light condensed into a circular formation.

Voices overlapped—not loud, but absolute.

"The vessel resisted inspection."

"A shadow of authority manifested."

"Probability deviation confirmed."

A pause.

Then a single command echoed:

"Assign a Guardian."

😇 The Guardian Descends 😇

Morning arrived with an unfamiliar presence.

Students woke to whispers racing through the academy.

"Heaven sent someone…"

"Not a Watcher."

"Something closer."

Kael felt it before he saw it.

A pressure—not heavy, not violent—

But watchful 👁️

When he stepped into the central courtyard, the air split with light.

A figure descended silently, wings folded like sculpted glass.

Seris Aurelion

She wore no armor.

No weapons.

Only a circlet of light hovered above her silver hair.

Her eyes were not cold.

They were… sad.

"Kael Ashwyn," she said gently.

"I am Seris Aurelion."

Every student dropped to their knees.

Even instructors bowed.

Only Kael remained standing.

Not in defiance.

In confusion.

"I've been assigned as your Guardian," Seris continued.

"Effective immediately."

A ripple of shock spread.

A Guardian was not protection.

It was surveillance with authority.

🌸 Elara's Reaction 🌸

Elara Virelyn pushed through the crowd.

Her expression was tight.

"Guardian Aurelion," she said respectfully,

"Kael has committed no crime."

Seris turned to her.

"I know."

That single answer unsettled Elara deeply.

🌑 Noctis Smiles 🌑

From the shade of a broken archway,

Noctis Vale watched with mild interest 😌

"…They sent her," he murmured.

"So Heaven is scared enough to choose mercy."

His eyes flicked to Kael.

"That complicates things."

⚖️ The Private Test ⚖️

Later that day—

Kael stood within a sealed chamber of light.

Only Seris stood with him.

No runes.

No chains.

Just silence.

"I will be direct," Seris said softly.

"Heaven believes you are unstable."

Kael clenched his fists.

"I don't even know why."

Seris studied him closely.

"That," she replied,

"is precisely why I was sent."

She raised a hand.

"Do not resist."

Light brushed Kael's aura.

Not invasive.

Not violent.

It was… listening.

Seris's eyes widened slightly.

"…There is no corruption."

She frowned.

"There is no malice."

Her hand trembled.

"There is no hunger."

She stepped back.

"…What are you?"

Kael swallowed.

"I was hoping you'd tell me."

For the first time—

A Guardian hesitated.

⛓️ The Seal Reacts ⛓️

The moment stretched.

Then—

The seal pulsed again.

Not painfully.

Not aggressively.

But with intent.

Inside—

Azrath Cain spoke.

"Interesting."

"A guardian who sees rather than judges."

Seris gasped softly.

She felt it.

Not demonic energy.

Not heavenly law.

But something older.

Sovereignty.

😇 A Choice Against Heaven 😇

Seris lowered her hand.

"This session is concluded," she announced.

She turned away from the observation sigils—

and subtly redirected them.

A Guardian's authority bent the system.

Kael stared.

"…You're lying to them."

Seris met his gaze.

"I am protecting Heaven," she said quietly.

"From what?"

She hesitated.

"…From realizing it may be wrong."

🌑 Noctis Explains 🌑

That night, Noctis joined Kael on the roof.

"Congrats," Noctis said lightly.

"You've been assigned the only Guardian capable of betrayal."

Kael blinked.

"…She betrayed Heaven?"

Noctis shrugged 🤷‍♂️

"She delayed truth."

He looked serious now.

"Which is far more dangerous."

Kael stared at the stars.

"So what happens now?"

Noctis smiled faintly.

"Now?"

"Heaven watches you through someone who might choose you instead."

👑 The King's Patience 👑

Inside the seal—

Azrath Cain observed silently.

"Do you see, child?"

"Power bends systems."

"But choice breaks them."

Kael clenched his fist.

"…I don't want to be a weapon."

Azrath's voice softened.

"Neither did I."

The seal loosened—

Not by force.

By agreement.
