Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — First Night of the Trial

For a few seconds after the creature died, no one moved.

The café was silent except for the faint hum of the lights above and the distant echo of sirens somewhere far across the ruined city.

The twisted body of the creature lay in the middle of the floor.

Black liquid slowly spread across the tiles.

Ren stared at it like his brain refused to understand what he was seeing.

"That…" he said slowly, "that was not normal."

Rei crouched slightly closer to the creature, studying it without touching.

Her voice was quiet but steady.

"No animal looks like this."

I gripped the broken chair leg in my hand.

My knuckles were white.

The glowing message still hovered faintly in my mind.

MISSION: SURVIVE — 23:58:41 REMAINING

The timer was already counting down.

Twenty-four hours.

If the message was real… if the system was real…

Then more things like that creature would appear.

And I had less than a day to stay alive.

Ren finally snapped out of his shock.

"Satoshi," he said, "how the hell did you react that fast?"

I hesitated.

"I… just moved."

Rei raised an eyebrow.

"That's not a real answer."

Before I could respond, Ren's father stepped forward carefully, holding a kitchen knife he had grabbed from behind the counter.

He looked at the creature, then at me.

"You saved everyone here."

His voice was calm but serious.

"But that thing didn't come here by accident."

Outside, somewhere down the street, another scream echoed.

Everyone in the café stiffened.

Then another sound followed.

A low growl.

Then a crash.

Something heavy slammed into a car outside.

Ren walked toward the window slowly.

"Please tell me that's the only one."

He peeked outside.

Then immediately jumped back.

"Okay nope."

Rei moved beside him.

"What is it?"

Ren swallowed.

"There are three more."

A wave of panic spread through the café.

Customers grabbed their bags.

One woman rushed toward the back exit.

"They're coming here!"

The creatures outside screeched again.

Claws scraped across metal.

My mind raced.

The system message flashed again.

TRIAL ACTIVE

THREAT LEVEL: LOW

Low?

If this was low, what was high?

Rei turned toward me.

"We can't stay here."

Ren nodded quickly.

"If more of those things come inside, we're dead."

Ren's father looked around the café.

His eyes settled on the staircase leading upward.

"The apartment above the café."

He pointed up.

"The stairway is narrow. We can block it."

Rei immediately understood.

"A defensive position."

"Exactly."

Ren grabbed a fire extinguisher from the wall.

"Okay, that's actually a good plan."

Outside, the creatures slammed against a car.

Metal crunched loudly.

They were getting closer.

Ren looked at me.

"Satoshi."

"Yeah."

"You killed one."

He tried to sound confident, but I could hear the fear underneath.

"You think you can handle another?"

I glanced down at the dead creature.

Then back toward the door.

"I guess we're about to find out."

Ren forced a nervous laugh.

"Great."

Rei grabbed a heavy metal tray from the counter.

"Everyone upstairs," she said firmly.

Her voice carried authority that cut through the panic.

People began rushing up the staircase.

Ren helped his father push a table toward the door to slow the creatures down.

I stepped closer to the broken entrance.

Outside, three shapes moved in the smoke.

Crawling.

Sniffing.

Searching.

One of them lifted its head.

Its twisted mouth opened.

It screamed.

The other two immediately turned toward the café.

They saw me.

And charged.

The first creature burst through the damaged doorway.

I swung the chair leg again.

The wood cracked against its skull.

But this time the creature didn't fall.

It lunged forward and knocked me back.

Pain exploded across my shoulder as I hit the floor.

"Satoshi!" Rei shouted from the stairs.

The creature jumped on top of me.

Its jaws opened wide.

Rows of teeth inches from my face.

I shoved the chair leg into its mouth.

The wood splintered under its bite.

Another creature crawled through the doorway behind it.

Ren ran down two steps.

"Screw this!"

He threw the fire extinguisher.

The heavy metal cylinder slammed into the creature's head.

It staggered.

I rolled sideways and kicked the one pinning me.

My foot connected with its ribcage.

It screeched.

Black fluid sprayed across the floor.

The third creature climbed through the broken door.

Three of them now.

My lungs burned.

This wasn't going to work.

Not like this.

Then the whisper returned.

Cold.

Mechanical.

SUBJECT 16

A new message appeared in front of my eyes.

ABILITY UNLOCK AVAILABLE

My heart skipped.

Ability?

The creatures lunged again.

No time to think.

"Activate," I whispered.

The world slowed.

Not completely.

But enough.

Another message appeared.

SKILL ACQUIRED

INSTINCTIVE COMBAT — LEVEL 1

Suddenly everything became clearer.

Movements.

Angles.

Distance.

The first creature attacked.

This time I stepped aside perfectly.

My body moved like it knew exactly what to do.

I grabbed a broken table leg from the floor and drove it into the creature's throat.

It collapsed instantly.

The second creature leapt toward me.

I ducked.

Its claws missed my head by inches.

I swung the weapon upward.

The wood pierced its skull.

The creature dropped.

The third one hesitated.

For the first time, it looked afraid.

Then it turned.

And ran back into the smoke.

The café fell silent again.

My chest rose and fell rapidly.

Ren slowly walked down the stairs.

His eyes were wide.

"Okay."

He looked at the two dead creatures.

Then at me.

"I'm officially terrified of you now."

Rei stepped closer, studying me carefully.

"You moved differently that time."

I couldn't answer.

Because another message appeared.

TRIAL PROGRESS UPDATED

CREATURES DEFEATED: 3

SURVIVAL STATUS: ACTIVE

Then a final message appeared.

The timer continued counting down.

23:17:09 REMAINING

Rei looked out the broken doorway.

Smoke drifted across the street.

The ruined skyline of Tokyo stretched endlessly in the distance.

She spoke quietly.

"If those things are appearing everywhere…"

Ren finished the thought.

"...then the whole city is turning into a battlefield."

I stared at the timer in front of my eyes.

Twenty-three hours left.

And something told me this was only the beginning.

Because somewhere in the shadows of the ruined street…

Something much larger was moving.
