Chapter 55 - : The Threshold That Watches Back

The spiral had changed.

It no longer merely existed in the distance.

It observed.

Not with eyes.

Not with intent in the human sense.

But with that unmistakable cosmic awareness — the kind that made reality itself feel slightly self-conscious under its gaze.

The group slowed almost unconsciously as they advanced along the fractured pathway of the Void of Fallen Universe. The light beneath their feet now pulsed in faint, uneven rhythms, as though responding to heartbeats that were not entirely their own.

Aerito was walking ahead this time, but his usual relaxed swagger had thinned into something more focused. Not fear.

Calculation.

Behind him, Kael finally broke the thickening silence.

"…Okay, I'm officially uncomfortable now."

No one disagreed.

• Pressure Without Weight

The strange part wasn't the gravity.

There was none.

Yet every step forward carried the sensation of descending deeper into something ancient — like walking down the throat of a forgotten god that had long ago decided to stop breathing.

Fragments of ruined architecture floated past them in slow orbit: shattered gates, broken rings of unknown alloys, and once—disturbingly—a massive stone hand drifting palm-up in the void, as if still waiting for something it had failed to catch.

Aarna's voice came softly beside Vicky.

"…Master."

Vicky turned slightly.

"Yes."

Her golden eyes were unusually serious now.

"…This place feels sad."

That made Arelia glance over.

Even Luka's gaze flickered briefly.

Because the word fit far too well.

Aerito exhaled quietly.

"…Yeah. That's the Fallen part of the name."

• The First Distortion Field

Without warning, the pathway beneath their feet flickered.

Then fractured.

Not breaking apart—but splitting into layered reflections of itself, like overlapping realities trying to occupy the same coordinates.

Eren immediately stopped walking.

"…Uh. Is it supposed to do that?"

Aerito raised one hand slightly.

"Hold position."

The group froze.

For three long seconds, the fractured pathway shimmered violently… then slowly stabilized again, merging back into a single coherent surface.

Aerito lowered his hand.

"…Temporal overlap pocket."

Kael rubbed his face.

"Of course it is. Why wouldn't it be."

But beneath the sarcasm, everyone had felt it.

They were being tested.

Not attacked.

Tested.

Through it all, Vicky remained outwardly calm.

But inside—

Something was definitely moving.

Not power.

Not fully memory.

But pressure.

Like distant doors inside his mind had begun to rattle faintly against their seals.

His fingers flexed once at his side.

Aarna noticed instantly.

She always did.

Her voice dropped to a soft whisper.

"…Master… does it hurt?"

Vicky paused.

Then quietly:

"…Not yet."

Aerito heard that.

And for the first time since entering the Void, a flicker of real concern passed through his eyes.

Because if the fragment was already reacting at this distance…

Then the deeper layers were going to get dangerous very quickly.

As they continued forward, the environment shifted again.

This time, massive vertical structures began forming on both sides of the pathway—tall, broken monoliths made of dark crystal and pale metallic bone.

Each one was engraved.

Not with language.

With moments.

Frozen battle scenes.

Falling stars.

Collapsing civilizations.

Kael slowed beside one of them.

"…Are these… recordings?"

Arelia nodded faintly.

"Historical imprints. Probably left behind when the universe collapsed."

Eren swallowed.

"So this place is basically a graveyard with memory issues."

Aerito gave a thin smile.

"…Pretty accurate."

Aarna tilted her head, studying one of the monoliths closely.

Then her eyes widened slightly.

"…Master… this one…"

Everyone looked.

The engraved figure was incomplete—damaged by time.

But the silhouette…

Silver hair.

Long coat.

Chains faintly visible.

Silence fell.

Kael blinked.

"…No way."

Luka's eyes narrowed dangerously.

Aerito didn't smile this time.

"…Yeah."

The fragment was definitely nearby.

• The Void Stirs

That's when it happened.

Far below the pathway—

Something moved again.

But this time it wasn't just a passing shadow.

The darkness itself folded inward for a moment, like something enormous had shifted position in its sleep.

A deep, slow tremor rolled upward through the void.

Not violent.

But heavy.

Ancient.

Watching.

Eren's voice dropped to a whisper.

"…Please tell me that thing is still asleep."

Aerito didn't answer immediately.

Which was answer enough.

Kael muttered,

"I knew today was going too smoothly."

Despite the growing tension, Aarna suddenly stepped a little closer to Vicky again.

Then—very gently—she reached out and tugged lightly on his sleeve.

"…Master."

Vicky glanced down.

"Yes?"

Her expression softened into something warm again.

"…Stay close, okay?"

For a brief moment, the heavy atmosphere around them seemed to thin just slightly.

Vicky studied her quietly.

Then gave a small nod.

"…I am not going anywhere."

Aarna smiled—bright and relieved.

Mission: emotional stability restored.

Kael watched this exchange and whispered to Luka,

"…They're weirdly wholesome for people walking through cosmic horror."

Luka didn't disagree.

Ahead—

The distant spiral pulsed again.

But this time, something new happened.

It grew larger.

Not by moving closer.

By unfolding.

Layer after layer of luminous rings began slowly rotating outward from its center, like a cosmic lock mechanism beginning to recognize the presence of something it had been waiting for.

Aerito stopped walking immediately.

"…Well."

His voice was quiet now.

"…That's new."

Arelia's eyes sharpened.

"It's responding directly to Vicky."

Everyone looked at him.

Vicky stood still, crimson eyes fixed on the expanding spiral.

Inside his mind—

The rattling doors grew louder.

Not opening.

Not yet.

But definitely weakening.

Then—

For the first time—

A sound came from below.

Not a roar.

Not a growl.

A breath.

Slow.

Ancient.

And very, very aware.

The entire pathway vibrated faintly.

Kael froze.

"…Nope."

Eren's voice cracked slightly.

"…That definitely wasn't background noise."

Aerito's playful mask was completely gone now.

"…We need to keep moving."

For the first time since entering the Void—

Urgency had appeared.

They moved faster now.

Not running.

But no longer casually walking either.

The monolith corridor began to thin behind them as the spiral ahead continued unfolding in slow, deliberate rotations.

The pressure in the air steadily increased.

Vicky's fingers twitched again.

Once.

Twice.

Aarna felt it.

Her grip on his sleeve tightened slightly.

"…Master…"

His voice came low.

"…It's calling."

Aerito exhaled sharply.

"…Yeah. We're close now."

Very close.

• Final Moment — The Watching Deepens

Just as they crossed the next stretch of the luminous pathway—

The void below opened one fraction wider.

And for the briefest possible instant—

Something enormous looked up.

Not fully visible.

Not fully awake.

But aware enough that every instinct in the group screamed the same warning:

You are no longer just travelers here.

You are noticed.

The spiral ahead flared brighter.

The pathway hummed.

And somewhere deep within the Fallen Void—

Something ancient began to rise… slowly.
