Chapter 29 - The Last Price

SIA POV :

Peace never announces when it's about to be tested.

It just… breaks.

It was raining the night the sky tore.

Not lightning.

Not thunder.

Something else.

A pressure.

Like the world was holding its breath.

Kai felt it first.

He stiffened beside me on the couch, eyes darkening.

"The Veil," he whispered. "It's not done."

My heart dropped. "But you gave up everything."

"Yes," he said. "But the Veil never takes only once."

The lights flickered.

The air turned cold.

And then… the world bent.

Not cracked.

Not shattered.

Folded.

Reality warped around us, pulling us out of the room and into a space that wasn't space at all.

White.

Endless.

Silent.

The Veil stood before us.

Not as a being.

As a presence.

As law.

As the final judge.

"Balance was restored," it spoke.

"But consequences remain."

Kai stepped in front of me instinctively.

"I'll pay," he said. "Again."

"No," I said firmly. "We pay together."

"One soul must return to where it belongs."

My breath caught.

"You mean…" I whispered.

"One of you does not belong in this world."

Kai turned to me sharply. "It's me."

I grabbed his hand. "No."

"I crossed worlds," he said. "I broke the laws.

I corrupted balance. This is my debt."

Tears filled my eyes. "You already paid."

"I'd pay a thousand times," he said softly, "if it meant you lived a full life."

I shook my head. "You are my life."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Then the Veil spoke again.

"There is… another option."

Hope flared dangerously.

"Both souls may remain — if neither belongs to any world."

Kai frowned. "Explain."

"You must give up your origin."

I blinked. "Our… what?"

"Your place. Your history. Your ties to any world that claims you."

"In simple words?" I asked quietly.

"You become… free."

Kai stared at me. "Homeless between worlds."

"Or," I said softly, "home with each other."

He searched my face. "Sia, this means leaving everything."

"I already left everything once," I replied. "When I forgot you."

Silence.

Then Kai smiled — sad, beautiful, certain.

"I'd rather lose the world than lose you."

I took his hand. "Then let's lose it together."

The Veil moved.

Not violently.

Not cruelly.

Gently.

Like untying a knot.

I felt something loosen inside my chest.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Just… release.

Kai felt it too.

His grip tightened.

"You okay?" he whispered.

"Yes," I said. "I feel… lighter."

"Your origins are severed," the Veil declared.

"You now belong… only to each other."

The white faded.

The pressure lifted.

And suddenly…

We were back.

On my balcony.

Under the stars.

Breathing.

Alive.

Together.

The world didn't remember what it lost.

No one noticed the laws change.

No one felt the shift.

Except us.

Because something inside us had changed forever.

Not broken.

Freed.

Kai leaned against the railing, exhaling deeply.

"No Veil," he said. "No worlds."

"No rules," I replied.

He turned to me. "Then what are we?"

I smiled through tears. "We're… us."

He stepped closer.

"I crossed worlds to hold your hand," he said softly.

I took it.

"And you crossed forever to stay."

But deep down…

I knew.

This wasn't the end yet.

The Veil never leaves without one last echo.
