Chapter 8 - Pulled into the Abyss

Darkness.

The kind that isn't just absence of light — it's weight. Pressure. A force that tugs at your chest, your limbs, your very soul.

I felt it swallowing me. Pulling me away from Kai. Pulling me away from the world I knew.

"Kai!" I screamed, my voice echoing against the impossible void.

His hand was still on mine — or at least I felt it — golden warmth against the cold that threatened to consume me. "I've got you! Don't let go!"

I tried. I truly tried.

But the force was relentless.

Through the haze of fear and weight, I saw him.

The stranger. His silver eyes glinted in the darkness, calm, composed, watching. He didn't move toward me. Didn't need to. The abyss did his work.

"You can fight," he said softly. "But the question is… can you win?"

"Kai!" I shouted again, panic slicing through me.

He gritted his teeth. "I will not lose you. Not here. Not now."

The shadows stretched from the rift, curling like living fingers. I could feel their icy touch brushing my skin — but something else was stronger. Kai's light. A tether that pulled me back from the edge.

I focused. Hard. My fingers tried to grasp his warmth. His hand. Something tangible in a world that was dissolving around me.

"Hold on to me!" he roared. "Focus on me — your world is here!"

I squeezed my eyes shut.

The stranger's voice floated through the darkness like smoke. "You are stronger than you know… but strength doesn't mean survival. Will you choose him… or will you falter?"

Every instinct screamed at me. Every heartbeat, every breath, every ounce of willpower demanded one thing: Kai.

"I… I choose…" I whispered.

"Kai," I gasped.

Golden light flared around him, illuminating the rift. The shadows recoiled. The abyss quivered.

The stranger's eyes narrowed. "Interesting."

Kai's grip tightened on mine. "You're mine,"

he said, voice low and fierce. "And I will pull you through this."

I felt the pull fade — not entirely, but enough to breathe. Enough to see Kai's face again, storm-gray eyes blazing, chest heaving, his presence a shield against everything trying to consume me.

"Almost…" he muttered. "Almost…"

I forced my trembling limbs forward, dragging myself closer to him. Every step burned. Every heartbeat screamed.

And then — his hand fully grasped mine.

A flash of golden light surged, brighter than ever. The abyss shrieked, twisting, bending.

The stranger recoiled, stepping back into the shadows.

"You… are stronger than I expected," he murmured, eyes locked on me. "But the game has just begun."

Before I could respond, he melted into the darkness. Gone.

Kai's arms wrapped around me, pulling me close. "You're safe," he whispered, though his chest still rose and fell rapidly.

I buried my face against him. "I… I was terrified."

"You'll never be alone in that," he said, voice shaking with emotion. "I swear it."

The ruins were silent now, but the weight lingered. Not fully gone. Not forgotten.

I realized something terrifying — and exhilarating.

The stranger wasn't gone.

He was waiting. Watching. Testing.

And our story — Kai's, mine, and his — was only just beginning.
