Pokémon: Seadra
Type: Water
Strength: High Ordinary
Potential: Elite
Sam almost laughed.
If Dowu could qualify for the Indigo Plateau Conference with this level of strength, then either certain Gym Leaders had gone easy on him—or luck had carried him the entire way.
Letting someone like this into the League really lowered the average standard.
Unfortunately, the audience didn't think so.
"Seadra! That's rare!"
"Dowu's getting serious now!"
"Take him down in one shot!"
There were passionate fans everywhere.
Sam decided to forgive them.
Ignorance wasn't a crime.
Dowu basked in the cheers, blowing kisses toward the stands before turning dramatically toward Sam.
"For my beloved fans," he declared, "I won't hold back anymore."
"Seadra, use Agility!"
Seadra darted across the water field, splashing wildly.
Dowu folded his arms proudly.
"Still time to surrender. My Seadra is invincible."
Sam's expression turned cold.
"Shut up."
His patience was gone.
"I'm not interested in playing children's games with you. Your strength isn't worth my attention."
He snapped his fingers.
"Dratini. Twister."
The water field roared instantly.
A violent spiral of wind and water formed, swallowing Seadra whole.
Its so-called "speed" looked laughably slow inside the vortex.
In seconds—
Seadra was hurled high into the air—
And slammed out of the battlefield.
BANG!
Seadra hit the ground and fainted.
Another one-shot.
Dowu's confident smile finally cracked.
"Humph. You're the first person who dares speak to me like that."
"Come back, Seadra."
He raised his final Poké Ball dramatically.
"I'll defeat you with my strongest Pokémon!"
"Go—Golbat!"

Final Pokémon
Pokémon: Golbat
Type: Poison / Flying
Strength: Elite Entry
Potential: Elite
Sam stared silently.
This was the "strongest"?
He really shouldn't expect anything.
Dowu laughed loudly.
"My Golbat will drain your Dratini dry!"
Sam simply glanced at Dratini and made a brief cutting motion across his throat.
Same command.
Same result.
"Dragon Rage."
Golden energy erupted once more.
Golbat barely had time to screech before being blasted from the sky.
One hit.
Knocked out.
The referee raised the flag.
"Golbat has lost the ability to battle! Victory goes to Sam!"
The commentator didn't hold back this time.
"This match was overwhelmingly one-sided! Dowu never posed real pressure. The difference in strength was clear. Congratulations to Sam for advancing to the next round!"
Sam returned Dratini calmly.
"That was boring, wasn't it?"
"Dratini."
The little dragon yawned.
It had barely warmed up.

Reunion
"Sam! Sam!"
Ash came running excitedly.
"Is your match over?"
"Just finished," Sam replied with a smile. "Sounds like you won too."
Misty rolled her eyes. "He almost lost."
"Hey!" Ash protested. "I won with my own strength!"
Sam chuckled.
Ash suddenly grew serious.
"Sam. I want to battle you at the Indigo Plateau Conference."
Sam placed a hand on his shoulder.
"As long as you keep winning, we'll meet."
Ash blinked. "Keep winning?"
Misty sighed. "Idiot. He means he'll make it to the finals. If you can too, you'll face him there."
Ash's eyes lit up.
"So that's it! Pikachu, let's keep winning!"
"Pikachu!"
Misty rubbed her forehead. "Does he even understand how strong the competition is?"
Brock laughed. "Confidence isn't a bad thing. Ash has improved a lot."
Sam smiled quietly and walked away.

Second Round — Rock Field
The following afternoon, Sam entered his second match at the Rock Battle Arena.
This opponent—
Was far more serious.
Dratini defeated Graveler.
Then Dodrio.
But against the opponent's final Pokémon—a Primeape—
Dratini finally fell.
"You did well," Sam said softly, recalling it.
He threw his next Poké Ball.
"Go, Lapras."
The crowd murmured.
"Lapras? On a Rock field?"
"Is he overconfident?"
Even the commentator was surprised.
"It seems Sam has great faith in his Lapras, choosing it in an unfavorable terrain!"
Across the field, the Primeape Trainer did not relax at all.
He had already witnessed Sam's strength.
He knew—
This battle would not be easy.
The referee's flag dropped.
"The match begins!"
And Lapras stepped forward calmly onto the rocky battlefield.
