Chapter 96 - Chapter 96: Ice Field Tactics

Gary was full of confidence in this battle. From the look of Sam's Lapras, it was still very young and definitely not as strong as his Kingler.

More importantly, there was no Water battlefield here. On land, Lapras had limited mobility. With the right location, timing, and momentum on his side, Gary believed he would definitely win.

"Then I'm starting, Sam," Gary said with a confident smile.

"Kingler, use Bubble Beam!"

Bubble Beam would deal damage to Lapras and potentially slow its movement speed. It was the perfect opening move—or so Gary thought.

"Lapras, use Ice Beam," Sam replied calmly.

Gary smirked. "It's useless. Ice-type moves won't do much to Kingler."

Water-types resisted Ice. On paper, the damage would indeed be limited.

Sam smiled.

"Who said the target is Kingler? Lapras, aim Ice Beam at the ground!"

From the very beginning, Sam's target had never been Kingler—it was the battlefield itself.

If he could turn the field into ice, the terrain advantage would shift instantly.

Ironically, Gary had helped him. If Kingler had rushed in for close combat from the start, Sam's plan might not have succeeded so smoothly. But Gary had chosen long-range offense.

The bubbles struck Lapras, but it barely reacted. Without even blinking, it continued firing Ice Beam at the ground.

Within moments, the entire battlefield was frozen solid.

The Ice Field was complete.

On land, Lapras was restricted.

On ice?

It ruled.

Gary rubbed his temples. He had overthought it and made a mistake. "Kingler, use Crab Hammer!"

If Kingler wanted to win, it had to close the distance. In long-range exchanges, it was clearly at a disadvantage.

Kingler charged forward, its massive body surprisingly fast as its legs gripped the ice.

But its speed, impressive among its own kind, was nothing compared to Lapras gliding across the frozen field.

With a slight flex of its muscles, Lapras began skating effortlessly. Even a professional skater couldn't match its speed.

The distance that Kingler had just managed to close widened again instantly.

The outcome was becoming clear.

Lapras continued firing attacks while gliding. Although Water- and Ice-type moves weren't super effective, the constant chip damage accumulated quickly.

Kingler was gradually overwhelmed.

"Come back, Kingler," Gary said at last.

He knew the match was decided. Continuing would only risk damaging Kingler's confidence.

"Sam… you're really strong," Gary admitted.

He couldn't even remember how many times he had been outmaneuvered by Sam—whether in Pokémon training or battlefield strategy.

But giving up wasn't his style.

He would climb every mountain in front of him.

"Go, Eevee. I'm counting on you."

Gary's expression turned serious.

Sam returned Lapras. "You did great."

He stretched his neck and shoulders.

Now the real battle was about to begin.

"Go, Clefairy!"

Nurse Joy, acting as referee, held her breath slightly. Even she could feel the intensity rising.

"Eevee, use Shadow Ball!"

Learning from his earlier mistake, Gary immediately went on the offensive.

The fox-like Eevee gathered dark energy and launched a black sphere toward Clefairy.

Its control over Shadow Ball was astonishing—almost on par with many Ghost-types.

"Clefairy, use Light Screen!"

Sam had long since gotten used to adding hand gestures to his commands, even if he once thought it looked a little dramatic.

"Pii~!"

Clefairy raised its hands.

Just before the Shadow Ball struck, a transparent barrier appeared.

Boom!

The Shadow Ball exploded against the Light Screen, filling the battlefield with black smoke.

Sam narrowed his eyes, ready to use his psychic link if needed.

But something was wrong.

When the smoke cleared, only Clefairy remained on the field.

Eevee was gone.

Disappeared?

No—

"Clefairy, watch out below!"

The only possibility was Dig.

Sam reacted quickly—but not quickly enough.

The ice beneath Clefairy shattered as Eevee burst upward from underground.

Impact.

Clefairy was sent flying.

The decisive battle had truly begun.
