Chapter 7 - The calm before the storm

THIRD PERSON

Nyx returned from the club after dropping Kira off and making sure that she's safe. Exhausted, she fell into her bed and slept deeply.

She woke up the next morning, without hangover because alcohol has zero effect on her demon blood. Her room was bright and elegant, with soft ivory walls, a low cream leather bed, sheer curtains letting in gentle breeze and a streak of daylight. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked a sparkling swimming pool, its surface catching the morning light and reflecting soft patterns across the room.

A soft knock sounded. Her mother entered, carrying a cup of chamomile tea, she set it on the nightstand.

"Drink," she said softly . "It will help you settle."

"Thank you mother" Nyx said.

"Now I will leave you to do your things, but make sure you don't miss breakfast okay!!" her mother gave an assuring smile, with that she left the room.

After taking the tea, she rose and stretched, feeling the fatigue ease from her limbs. She slipped into the pool, the cool water enveloping her like silk, creating gentle ripples as sunlight danced across the surface.

Afterward, she went downstairs for breakfast. The table was laid out with French toast, a sandwich, roasted chicken, and a bowl of oats. She ate slowly, savoring the quiet morning. Her phone vibrated, and she saw a message from Alexander: Pack your bags, we're going on a short trip.

Nyx left the message on read. Moments later, her phone rang and she answered.

"You got my message?" Alexander asked, his tone flat and commanding.

She hesitated briefly. "Yes."

"Good. Be ready in three hours. I'm sending my driver to pick you up. We're visiting my paternal grandmother's house." The line went dead before she could respond.

Nyx quickly got ready and informed her mother about the trip, when the driver arrived, she gave her a brief hug before she slid into the back seat as the car pulled away.

At the airport, she was escorted straight onto the private jet, where Alexander was already seated.

"I know this trip came suddenly," Alexander said as the jet took off, "but it's necessary. My grandmother has been asking to see me for a while. It's either now or never."

Nyx nodded calmly. "I understand."

Upon landing, a helicopter was waiting to take them to the palace on top the mountain. From above, Nyx could cite the pine trees and locals working peacefully in their farms

At the palace entrance, Alexander's grandmother stood waiting. She immediately embraced him warmly. When her eyes fell on Nyx, she gasped. "Oh my! Who could this angel be?"

Nyx shook her head politely. "You've got it wrong, ma'am. I work for His Majesty as second in command after Prince Draven."

The grandmother smiled, curious she asked."And your name?"

"Nyx," Alexander replied.

"Nyx—a very sweet name. Welcome, my dear. Feel at home, and I hope you're hungry; I personally prepared the dishes."

Nyx gave a polite nod as Alexander remained silent, observing.

Dinner finished, and later, after settling in, Nyx was in her new room. A soft knock at the door drew her attention. She rose from the bed and opened it to find Alexander standing there.

"I know you're curious about why we're here," he said. "I won't beat around the bush." He paused, his expression unreadable. "The main reason my grandmother summoned me is due to the disappearance of some locals, people vanishing without a trace. The thing is my grandmother and the locals that live here are human, but their blood is special. Someone seems to be trying to exploit it and we're here to investigate."

Nyx listened silently, absorbing the weight of his words.

"Get some rest for now. Tomorrow, we start our investigation." He said.

Nyx nodded quietly, closing the door behind him. By the time dawn crept through the window, Nyx was already awake, preparing herself for what lay ahead.

Towards mid-morning, Nyx and Alexander were ready. Alexander's grandmother had briefed them over breakfast, pointing out the areas where the disappearances had been reported. "Be careful," she warned, her tone calm but firm. "There's something dark out there."

They set out immediately walking along the paths through the fields, every step measured. The mountain air was cool, but the smell of danger didn't go unoticed.
