Chapter 5 - The Call

That night three years ago really stayed with Lin Yue for a time after the police officer dropped her off at her apartment. It was empty and quiet. Lin Yue sat on the couch where her niece Tiantians coloring books were still, over the place. Lin Yue could not get up. Think about anything. The silence was very hard to deal with. It felt like something was pushing down on Lin Yue.

Lin Yues parents came over after the sun was up. They found Lin Yue sitting on the couch just staring at nothing in particular. Lin Yues mother tried to give her a hug. Lin Yue felt really weird like she was not even, in her own body.

Lin Yues father started making phone calls taking care of things because someone had to do it and Lin Yue was not able to do anything.

The funeral was an traditional one. Lin Yue wore the clothes that people wear when they are mourning. She burned incense. Did all the things that you are supposed to do. Lin Yue stood at the cemetery. Saw two caskets being put into the ground. One casket was big. The other one was really small. It was so sad to see the casket. Lin Yue felt empty inside.

Her life was not the same anymore. There was an empty space where her life used to be. Lin Yue felt nothing except this emptiness. The funeral was for the people, in the two caskets. Lin Yue was saying goodbye to them.

The police did not come to her apartment until two weeks later with their report. There were two officers. They both looked really uncomfortable with what they had to do. They sat down in her living room. Told her what they had found out about the situation. The police officers were clearly not happy, about being and having to give her the news.

The report says that Zhao Jun was driving after drinking much alcohol. His blood had a lot of alcohol in it more than what's allowed by law. The amount was zero point nine percent, which's too high. Zhao Jun went over the line, in the middle of the road. Hit another car head on. This was a bad accident. The police say it was Zhao Juns fault because he was drunk. The case is now finished. Zhao Jun made a mistake by driving when he was drunk.

Lin Yue had listened in disbelief. That is impossible she thought. Lin Yue knew that he did not drink that night. He never drank and drove Lin Yue was absolutely sure of that. There must be some kind of mistake Lin Yue told herself.

The police officers were nice to me. They meant business. The report that showed what was in my system was very clear. All the evidence they found proved it. Maybe I was feeling really overwhelmed. I stopped somewhere to have a drink to calm down. The test of my blood did not tell any lies. The blood test showed the truth, about my drinking. The officers looked at the results of the blood test. They knew what happened.

Lin Yue wanted to know who the other driver was. She had asked this question because she really needed to find out. The other driver was someone Lin Yue did not know. Lin Yue had asked about the driver.

The drivers name is not being told because of privacy. He will not get in trouble because the accident was not his fault. The police are still looking at what happened. They cannot give out the full report, about the accident right now.

Lin Yue looked at the report that told her what happened to her family. The words were very formal. Did not sound like they were talking about real people. Lin Yue said "This is not right." She knew her husband well. Lin Yue knew that her husband would never do something, like that. Lin Yue was sure of it. She knew her husband.

The officers were already getting ready to leave. They told Lin Yue they were sorry. Then they left. Now Lin Yue was by herself, with a piece of paper. This paper said that her dead husband was the one who killed himself and their daughter. It said he was driving drunk when it happened. Lin Yue had the paper. She was all alone.

She looked at the pharmacy receipt that was in Zhao Juns wallet. It said twenty-one oh-three on it. The accident happened at nine-seventeen PM. That is fourteen minutes later.

Zhao Jun had supposedly drunk a lot of alcohol in those fourteen minutes. He had drunk enough to be over the limit. This did not make sense to her. The pharmacy receipt from Zhao Juns wallet did not add up with what happened.

Zhao Jun was involved in an accident. The pharmacy receipt was a clue. The time on the pharmacy receipt was twenty-one oh-three and the accident was at nine-seventeen PM, which was fourteen minutes later. Zhao Jun had drunk too much alcohol, in that short time, which just did not make sense.

Lin Yue was really frustrated. Felt desperate. She had hired a lawyer to help her. This lawyer tried his best. He kept running into the same problems. The police would not give him any information, about the accident.

They could not find out who the other driver was. After a month the lawyer told Lin Yue that he was sorry but there was nothing more he could do to help Lin Yue.

Lin Yue did not want to accept what happened. Lin Yue started to look into the matter herself. Lin Yue went to the place where the accident happened she tried to find people who saw what occurred.

She even put up messages, on local social media groups to see if anyone knew something.

One response was really different. This old man who sold things on the street near where the accident happened had sent Lin Yue a message.

When Lin Yue met with the street vendor the elderly street vendor was very nervous and did not want to talk to Lin Yue.

"A days after the accident someone came to see me " he said. "This person was not a police officer. It was a man who drove a nice car. He told me that it would be better, for me and my family if I just forgot what I saw that day. The man gave me some money to make that happen.

Lin Yue asked me what I saw. Her heart was beating fast at that moment.

The other car crossed the line first. This car swerved into the lane. Your husband tried to avoid the car but he could not. The other driver of the car was drunk I could smell the alcohol on the other driver..

By the time the police arrived someone had already been there moving things around talking to the other driver of the other car. The other car and the whole situation got changed around.

Lin Yue felt an anger spreading through her chest. She said "Who?"

The old man shook his head. He said "Rich people and powerful people are the kind of people you do not want to cross if you want to stay safe. I am sorry for your loss I really am.. I have to think about my grandchildren. I can not say anything, about this in court. I just wanted you to know that your husband was not to blame.

Then he had left, hurrying away. Lin Yue had tried to find the man but the mans vegetable stand had been abandoned and the neighbors said the man had moved away really suddenly.

Lin Yue was looking for the man. The man was gone. The mans vegetable stand was empty. Lin Yue did not know where the man had gone.

This really made Lin Yue think about what she knew. Her husband was not guilty of anything. Somebody else was responsible, for the accident.. That somebody had a lot of money and power which they used to hide the truth and blame Zhao Jun instead.

Lin Yue went to the police station a lot she wanted to know what happened so she kept asking them for answers until they told her they would take her to court for bothering them.

Lin Yue also talked to people who write news. They did not want to write about Lin Yues story because she did not have any evidence. Lin Yue even sent letters to people who work for the government. Nobody wrote back, to Lin Yue.

She realized that things were not going to work out for her. It took her a time to see this and it was very hard for her to accept. The problem is that the system is not fair. It helps people who have a lot of money and know people. The system does not help people like her.

It does not help the justice system work for people who need it. The justice system and the people in charge of it are supposed to help everyone. They do not. They only care about people, with money and connections.

Lin Yue had changed her tactics. She could not get justice through the system so Lin Yue would get it outside of the system. Lin Yue wanted to find out who had killed Lin Yues family and covered it up. Lin Yue was going to make the people who did this pay for what they did, to Lin Yues family.

That was when the real investigation started. This was the investigation that took up the three years of her life. At that time Lin Yue began to gather information and create files. She was changing herself from a woman who lost her husband into someone stronger and tougher.

Lin Yue was becoming harder and colder. People would soon find out that she was more dangerous than they thought. The investigation and the files were very important, to Lin Yue.

Lin Yue was standing in her apartment three years later. She still remembered the moment she made that decision. This was the moment that changed everything for Lin Yue. She had been sitting in her apartment surrounded by lots of papers and things that were not working out.

Lin Yue had looked at Tiantians drawings that were still on the refrigerator and Zhao Juns books that were still, on the shelf. When Lin Yue saw these things she felt something change inside of her. Lin Yue felt this shift inside of her. It made her think about what she really wanted to do with her life.

The sadness was still there. Now something else was there too. I had a reason to keep going. I had a plan. I was very determined to make sure that the people who did this thing would not be able to just live their life as usual while mine was completely messed up.

The people who did this would have to pay for what they did, to me. I was going to make sure of it. I was going to make sure that the people who hurt me would not get to be happy and comfortable.

The Zhang family thought they had gotten away with what they did. They believed their money and the people they knew had made the Zhang family completely safe, from any trouble.

The Zhang family had moved on with their lives by now and they probably did not think about that night much anymore.

But they were wrong about being untouchable. Lin Yue was going to prove that. She was coming for them, and they would never see her coming until it was far too late
