Kenzie's POV
"You look better," Bessie said as they climbed into the car. "Very fit, very lit."
Kenzie let out an exhausted sigh. "Bessie, please."
One more fake compliment and she'd be begging the doctor to readmit her. At least Bessie just laughed as her mother's driver fired up the engine.
The silent car ride gave her space to think.
She'd figured her mother would show up when she got discharged, or at least Quentin. Instead, she got stuck with chatty Bessie.
"What sounds good for dinner? Chicken soup?" Bessie asked sweetly.
Kenzie turned toward the window, ignoring her. She still couldn't wrap her head around the fact that the attack had put her in the hospital, or that none of her friends had bothered calling.
Tonight was True Poker Night at Sebastian Underwood's casino, and Maya knew she never passed up a chance to double her money.
"Fish and chips then?" Bessie's voice pulled her back. "Or something else?"
