Chapter 84 - Chapter 84: The Audit Blade Falls

Central Cultivation Bureau Spire, Central District — January 23, 2029 — 11:47 a.m.

The Grand Audit Hall occupied the entire seventeenth floor of the Central Spire, a vast circular chamber of white jade and mirrored obsidian whose domed ceiling bore the Bureau's silver scale array pulsing faintly with each probed qi signature. Tiered seating rose in concentric rings around the central platform where clan representatives stood in ordered ranks by tier. Mortal and Bronze clans filled the outer rows, Silver and Gold occupied the middle, Platinum Tier delegations stood closest to the platform fully exposed beneath the inspectors' unrelenting gaze.

Sovereign Xuan Wei presided from a raised throne of polished black jade, silver hair bound in a severe topknot, obsidian eyes unblinking. His presence pressed down on the room like deep water. Three Grandmaster inspectors flanked him, two women and one man, all specialists in water-qi detection and illusion piercing, clad in stark white robes with sleeves embroidered in the Bureau's silver scales. They glided between delegations like ghosts, jade slips in hand, qi threads probing every submitted record without mercy.

Grandmaster Lan Qing, the lead inspector, a tall woman expert in illusion-piercing and water-qi dissonance, stepped forward holding a faintly glowing jade slip. "Blue Lotus Sect. Your vassal qi-assignment logs show irregularities in the Western Fog branch. Three low-tier wards listed as 'orphaned cousins' with no attached birth records. One in particular, Shui Wei, age eighteen, Mortal Realm threshold, has received no cultivation stipend for the past six months yet his qi signature appears in minor frost-lotus harvest reports. Explain."

Shui Lian's heart stuttered once then steadied with brutal force. She inclined her head. "A clerical oversight, Grandmaster. The boy is a distant relative taken in out of charity. His stipend was suspended due to low talent assessment. The harvest reports are accurate, he gathers herbs for the family apothecary. No sect resources were misused."

Grandmaster Lan Qing's eyes narrowed. "Your sect's water-qi purity doctrine demands full documentation for all wards. This omission raises questions, especially given recent skirmishes on your western border."

Murmurs rippled through the lower tiers.

Shui Lian kept her voice even. "Skirmishes?"

"Two minor outposts attacked last night with Crimson Tide remnant sigils burned into the gates. A poisoned supply caravan in the Southern Rivers carried Blue Lotus signature toxin in the herbs. Iron Phoenix loyalists claimed responsibility. All three groups your sect crushed decades ago are suddenly active again. Coincidence?"

The chamber grew quieter.

Shui Lian felt every gaze settle on her yet kept her expression serene. "We are investigating. They are rogue elements, likely unaffiliated. The Blue Lotus has no quarrel with ghosts of the past."

Grandmaster Lan Qing tapped the jade slip. "Your records show no defensive reallocations or elder deployments to the borders yet your pavilion's qi consumption spiked seventeen percent in the last week. Care to explain?"

Shui Lian's mind raced. The private shadows searching for her son, the quietly strengthened arrays around her chambers, and the late-night mirror communications with old contacts, all small, all hidden, but enough to leave traces. "Routine maintenance," she said smoothly. "Winter mist thickens in the mountains. We reinforced the outer wards. Nothing more."

Sovereign Xuan Wei spoke for the first time, voice low and cold yet carrying effortlessly across the hall. "Routine maintenance does not require seventeen percent more qi nor does it explain why three of your vassal families in the Western Fog report missing wards in the same cycle, all male, all around eighteen years of age, all with faint water affinity."

The chamber went deathly still.

Shui Lian's blood turned to ice yet she forced her expression to remain serene. "Coincidence, Sovereign. The Western Fog is lawless. Children wander. Some are taken by bandits. Some simply run. We are looking into it."

Xuan Wei's obsidian eyes bored into her. "You will submit full ward registries by tomorrow, every orphan, every cousin, every distant relative under Shui oversight. If even one name is missing or one record redacted without justification the Blue Lotus will answer for it." He leaned forward slightly. "And Elder Shui Lian, I remember the Void Sparrow purge. I remember my brother's head on a pike while your sect preached purity. I have waited twenty-eight years for the Bureau to look closely at your records. Today that day finally came."

Shui Lian bowed deep and flawless. "As you command, Sovereign."

She straightened with her face still serene but inside the terror now had teeth.

He knew.

Sovereign Xuan Wei knew about the boy.

How?

She had buried every trace, redacted every record, erased every mention. The only people who knew were herself and Elder Feng Tao and Feng Tao would die before speaking.

Yet Xuan Wei had named the boy's age, his gender, his faint water affinity. He had connected the missing wards to her personal lineage.

Someone had fed him information, someone inside her own circles or someone with access to Bureau archives she could no longer fully control.

The realization struck like a blade to the throat.

If Xuan Wei knew about Shui Wei the audit was no longer about records or skirmishes. It was personal. He was hunting her weakness.

And if he found the boy, if he dragged her illegitimate son into the light during the conference, her position would collapse, her life would end, the Blue Lotus would disown her to save face, and her son wherever he was would be executed as proof of her impurity.

She returned to her place among the delegation, nodded politely to the other elders, smiled faintly when they offered condolences about the unfortunate border incidents, but her mind screamed.

She could not use sect resources, could not alert the elders, could not risk exposure.

She would have to search alone through old favors, personal shadows, every hidden contact she still controlled.

She would find him and bring him back, silencing anyone who knows about him.

Outside the Central Spire gleamed under the winter sun.

Inside the Grand Audit Hall an elder stood alone with a mother's terror.

And far to the east in the Shadow Lotus Pavilion Zhao Ming felt the first tremor in the web.

He smiled into the dark.

The distraction had begun.

The Blue Lotus would bleed long before they understood why.

In the shadowed corridors and mist-veiled pavilions of the Blue Lotus Sect that evening, murmurs spread like ripples across still water. Elders gathered in small knots beneath frost-lotus lanterns, their voices kept low yet sharp with unease.

"Did you hear Sovereign Xuan Wei's tone when he named the Void Sparrow purge?" one whispered. "Twenty-eight years he waited—twenty-eight years—and today he finally bared the blade."

Another, fingers tight around a teacup, replied, "It was not the border skirmishes that drew blood from Elder Shui Lian's face. It was the boy, Shui Wei. He spoke the name as though he had held the record in his hand all along."

A younger core disciple, lingering near the pillar, dared add, "Three missing wards, all boys of eighteen, all faint water affinity… and our own logs silent on them. If the Bureau demands full registries tomorrow and one thread unravels…"

The sentence hung unfinished.

Someone else hissed, "The Zhao name surfaces again in every dark corner these days. First the poisoned caravans, now this audit sharpened like a guillotine. Coincidence? Or are we already bleeding from wounds we cannot, see?"

A heavy quiet settled, broken only by the soft drip of melting frost from the eaves. No one mentioned Elder Shui Lian by name after that, but every glance toward the northern pavilion carried the same unspoken question: what secret does she guard so fiercely that even Sovereign Xuan Wei smells it from across the city? And how much longer before the entire sect pays the price for her silence?
