Chapter 81 - Chapter 81: Stirring Old Wounds

Shadow Lotus Pavilion, Eastern Mist District — January 14, 2029 — 9:37 p.m.

The private war room beneath the pavilion was lit only by a single row of floating qi lanterns that cast long, steady amber light across the black jade table. Maps of Lingyuan City and the Northern Mist Mountains lay spread open, marked with crimson ink: Zhao Clan territories in gold, vassal holdings in silver, Blue Lotus outposts circled in black. A low hum of defensive arrays vibrated through the stone walls, muffling every sound from the world above.

Zhao Ming stood at the head of the table, sleeves rolled to the elbows, black shirt open at the throat. His golden-shadow qi drifted lazily around his fingers as he traced the jagged border line separating the Western Fog slums from the Northern Mist Mountains. The Blue Lotus pavilion sat like a dark jewel at the center of the range, untouchable, and heavily warded, Platinum Tier power radiating even from the paper.

Lin Mei sat to his right, crimson silk robe loosely tied, one leg crossed over the other, watching him with quiet intensity. Yue Lin leaned against the wall behind her, arms folded, storm-gray eyes fixed on the map. Lin Xue stood near the door, hands clasped in front of her, gentle presence a soft counterpoint to the tension in the room. Duan Yue had just arrived; her midnight-blue Bureau robes were still dusted with the faint frost of the upper city, hair pinned severely, expression grim.

Zhao Ming spoke without looking up.

"We cannot strike the Blue Lotus head-on. Not yet. Platinum Tier means Sovereign-level guardians, mirror arrays that can reflect any assault, and enough elders to drown us in water qi before we reach the outer gates. Direct war would bleed us dry. We need distraction and chaos. Something that forces them to look inward instead of outward."

He tapped the map once sharp, and decisive right on the jagged line of old border skirmishes between the Blue Lotus and three long-fallen sects.

"Their past enemies are still alive in memory. The Crimson Tide Sect was crushed forty years ago, but their surviving disciples scattered into rogue bands and minor clans. The Iron Phoenix Order lost their pavilion to Blue Lotus poison arrays thirty years back; their remnants still nurse grudges in the Southern Rivers. And the Void Sparrow Clan, wiped out in the Codex theft scandal twenty-five years ago, left behind a network of hidden loyalists who never forgave the Blue Lotus for the purge."

Lin Mei leaned forward, crimson eyes narrowing.

"You want to stir those old grudges."

"I want them to burn hot again." Zhao Ming's voice was calm, almost conversational. "Anonymous tips. Forged letters 'leaked' from Blue Lotus archives. Small shipments of spirit herbs laced with subtle poisons that only the old enemies would recognize as Blue Lotus signature. Let rumors spread that the Blue Lotus is quietly reclaiming lost territory, that they're hunting down the last survivors of the Crimson Tide and Iron Phoenix. Let paranoia do the work."

Yue Lin pushed off the wall, arms still folded.

"The rogue bands are scattered and weak. They would need a spark, someone to organize them, arm them, and point them at the right targets."

Zhao Ming's lips curved.

"We give them that spark. Through intermediaries. Li Clan shadows posing as disgruntled ex-disciples. Serpent vassals smuggling weapons under false flags. By the time the Blue Lotus realizes they're facing coordinated strikes from three directions, they'll be too busy defending their outer outposts to send Grandmasters south."

Lin Xue spoke softly from the doorway.

"It will take time. And money."

"Time, we have. Money is no object." Zhao Ming glanced at Duan Yue. "Nightshade. Your report."

Duan Yue stepped forward, placing a sealed jade slip on the table. Her voice was steady, but her fingers betrayed a faint tremble as she released it.

"The Central Cultivation Bureau audit begins in nine days. Every clan above Bronze Tier must submit full records: qi-assignment logs, vassal contracts, registered techniques, and recent breakthroughs. The Blue Lotus will be under particular scrutiny this cycle. The Bureau Master, Sovereign Xuan Wei, has never hidden his personal dislike for them."

Lin Mei raised an eyebrow.

"Personal?"

Duan Yue nodded once.

"Twenty-eight years ago, during the Void Sparrow purge, the Blue Lotus framed Xuan Wei's younger brother as a collaborator. He was executed publicly, beheaded in the Northern Plaza while Sovereign Xuan Wei was away on a heavenly tribulation retreat. Xuan Wei returned to find his brother's head on a pike and the Blue Lotus claiming it was 'justice for traitors.' He has never forgiven them. Every audit since then has been harsher on Blue Lotus holdings. This year, rumors say he personally requested the audit team include three Grandmaster-level inspectors who specialize in illusion and water-qi detection, exactly the Blue Lotus's strengths."

Zhao Ming's eyes gleamed.

"So, while we stir their old enemies, the Bureau will be digging into their present. Two fronts. Internal and external."

Duan Yue continued.

"The conference follows the audit—three days later, at the Central Spire. All clan heads above Silver Tier are required to attend. Sovereign Xuan Wei will preside. If the Blue Lotus arrives weakened—defending outposts, and scrambling to explain discrepancies, they will lose face. And face matters to a Platinum Tier sect more than territory."

Lin Mei traced a finger along the map's border.

"They'll be forced to pull elders back from the hunt. Grandmasters from our borders. Their attention will fracture."

Zhao Ming leaned forward, palms flat on the table.

"Exactly. Yue Lin, coordinate the shadow teams. Small strikes only, enough to draw blood, not start a full war. Target supply lines, minor outposts, and rumor mills. Make it look like the Crimson Tide remnants are finally striking back. Lin Xue, work with the Serpent vassals to smuggle the laced herbs. Use the Tranquil Feast supply routes, as they are untraceable. Duan Yue, feed the Bureau just enough 'anonymous tips' to justify deeper audits without exposing our hand."

Yue Lin nodded sharply.

"I'll have the first strike ready in four days. Quiet and precise."

Lin Xue bowed her head slightly.

"The herbs are already being prepared. I'll ensure the shipments look like normal trade."

Duan Yue met Zhao Ming's gaze.

"I'll plant the tips tomorrow. The Bureau Master will be… receptive."

Zhao Ming straightened.

"Good. We move carefully. No mistakes. The Blue Lotus must bleed slowly, enough to weaken them, not enough to make them turn south in full force. When they're distracted, when their elders are pulled north and their pride is bruised at the conference, we tighten the net around Shui Wei. He becomes our hidden blade. Water affinity. Hidden bloodline. Perfect for infiltration when the time comes."

Lin Mei rose gracefully from her seat, stepping close to him. Her hand slid up his chest, fingers curling into his shirt.

"And when the boy is ready? When he stands before his mother?"

Zhao Ming's arm circled her waist, pulling her against him.

"He decides her fate. Whatever he chooses, it will be his. But he will choose from strength. From power we gave him. And when he looks at her and sees only the woman who discarded him… he will remember who lifted him up."

Lin Mei pressed closer, lips brushing his ear.

"You are building something beautiful, Ming'er."

He kissed her temple.

"I am building family."

The qi lanterns dimmed slightly, as though the room itself understood the weight of the words.
