Chapter 14 - Exchange in the Shadows

Slowly, we left the beggar alley and split into two groups.

In one group were Hasami, Moneru, and me.

Our destination was the south-east side of the city, where Dov Dakin's house was located.

That was where we would conduct the salt trade.

The main problem was that we weren't the only ones watching Dov's house.

City guards were patrolling the streets as part of the night watch, and on top of that, several suspicious individuals were clearly keeping their eyes on Dov's place.

The three of us moved carefully, hiding whenever necessary, until we finally reached the area.

Just as expected, there were people sitting and lying around near Dov's house, pretending to rest. One glance was enough to understand—they were watching him closely.

Seeing this, we slipped into a nearby dark alley.

"These people aren't ordinary," Hasami whispered.

I nodded. "They're monitoring Dov's house."

We waited there silently.

After a while, the door of Dov's house opened.

A man wrapped in a cloak stepped out and began walking down the road to the right.

And immediately—

All the suspicious people followed him.

There were six of them.

We watched without making a sound.

Even after they disappeared from sight, we stayed hidden for a while longer. Only when the street was completely empty did we come out and carefully approach Dov's house.

I stepped forward and knocked softly on the door.

Moneru and Hasami stood beside me.

The gate opened—it was Dov Dakin himself.

"Come in. Quickly," he said.

We entered, and he closed the door behind us.

He pulled out a chair for me.

I sat down.

With a serious expression, I spoke.

"Mr. Dakin, you did what I asked you to do here. What about the second thing I mentioned?"

Dov replied with a poker face.

"It's done as well. Just as you instructed, I placed a man with a horse cart. As long as someone mentions my name, he'll give you the cart."

He paused, then asked,

"But where are the products?"

I smiled calmly.

"Don't worry. I brought them with me."

I reached into a small bag beside me and pulled out a large sack.

Everyone's eyes widened instantly.

Dov stared at the sack in shock.

"How did you do that? Is it magic or something?"

Hasami and Moneru looked at me with questioning expressions.

I gave them a small smile.

"Our boss gave me this magical bag. It can store a certain amount of items."

Loid's Memory

Before midnight, I went alone to the southern side of the beggar alley, using the excuse that I needed to pee. There was no one around.

I transferred all the salt into the large sack, then stored it inside the item bag.

With everything prepared, I returned quietly to the alley.

Dov smiled faintly.

"Can you sell that bag to me?"

I shook my head with a smile.

"It can't be sold."

Dov's expression darkened slightly as he began checking the salt.

Then I asked calmly,

"By the way, I heard you were taken to see the Count. What happened there?"

Dov sighed.

"The Count asked me about the salt. I told him it came from a new merchant from the neighboring country—high-quality salt that can't be found in our country. A newcomer with no backing, who doesn't want trouble, so he's only doing small business with me."

I listened silently.

"He said he wanted to meet the merchant and offer his backing. I had no choice but to say I would convey the offer. Then he let me go."

I asked with a poker face,

"What do you think of Count Ribary de Abik?"

Dov thought for a moment.

"He's not a bad man. That's all I can say."

I nodded.

"Alright. I'll trust your judgment. Tomorrow, tell the Count that we'll meet him the next time we come to Abik."

Dov looked thoughtful.

"When will that be?"

"Next month," I replied calmly.

"And sell the salt in small amounts each day. Don't release all the stock at once."

"I was thinking the same," Dov said.

He handed me a pouch.

"How much is inside?"

"Fifty-five silver coins."

Hasami and Moneru made strange expressions, but I remained composed.

After coming to Dov's house, these two hadn't said a single word. In a way, that was a good thing.

I could've gotten sixty. Five coins were used for the horse cart. Still, a fair deal.

I checked the coins and asked,

"By the way—who was the cloaked man?"

Dov smiled.

"My son, Davon."

"He drew all the spies toward South Lake. I told him to sit there quietly. They must be hiding behind him now, thinking he's waiting for the merchant."

Hearing that, I laughed openly.

We left Dov's house with Moneru and Hasami.

The road was clear.

We headed toward the south-west side of the city.

The Other Group

Meanwhile, Roberto, Mac, and Arim were moving through the south-west side.

There was a broken section of the city wall there—but guards were watching it closely.

They retrieved the horse cart from Dov's people on the south-west street.

Roberto was the only one capable of driving the cart, so he took that role.

Mac's task was to lure the guards away.

Arim wasn't in good condition, so he stayed seated inside the cart.

According to the plan, Roberto waited quietly with Arim near the broken wall, hidden in a narrow alley.

Mac moved north.

Seeing the street silent, just as I instructed, Mac pulled the trigger on the sound bomb and threw it into the street.

BOOOOM!

A massive sound echoed through the area.

The sound bomb had been triggered.

The guards rushed toward the noise.

When we heard the explosion, Moneru, Hasami, and I immediately started running.
