Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Day She Chooses.

Mireya did not sleep well.

Not because she was afraid.

But because she was awake to something new.

Hope.

It was uncomfortable, unfamiliar, and persistent. It sat in her chest like a quiet question that refused to disappear.

Can I really do this?

She stared at the ceiling until morning light slowly filled the room.

Today, she had asked Jae to talk.

Not about work.

Not about small things.

About them.

At work, Mireya moved carefully, as if the floor might shift under her feet. Hana noticed immediately.

"You look like someone about to confess to a crime," Hana said while pouring tea.

Mireya sighed. "That bad?"

"Worse," Hana replied. "You're calm."

Mireya pressed her lips together. "I asked Jae to talk today."

Hana's eyes widened. "Oh."

"Yes. That 'oh.'"

Hana reached out and squeezed her arm. "Whatever you say, say it honestly. You're not wrong for wanting safety. And you're not wrong for wanting love."

Mireya swallowed. "What if I ruin it?"

Hana smiled softly. "Then it wasn't fragile—it was real."

Jae arrived later than usual.

When he saw Mireya, his expression changed—serious, attentive.

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly.

"Yes," she said. "Just… nervous."

He nodded. "Me too."

That made her feel less alone.

They decided to walk after work.

The city was busy, people rushing past, cars honking, life moving quickly. But between them, time felt slower.

They stopped at a small café near the park. It wasn't fancy. Just warm, quiet, safe.

They sat across from each other.

Jae waited.

Mireya took a deep breath.

"I'm not good at this," she said.

"You don't have to be," he replied.

She looked down at her hands. "I've spent most of my life protecting myself. Silence, distance, routine… they were my armor."

He listened closely.

"But with you," she continued, "I don't feel attacked. I feel… seen. And that's scarier than being hurt."

Jae leaned forward slightly. "Because being seen means being known."

"Yes."

Silence settled between them.

Not uncomfortable.

Honest.

"I don't want to hurt you," Mireya said. "And I don't want to lose myself trying to be brave."

Jae exhaled slowly. "I don't want you to change for me."

She looked up.

"I just want to walk beside you," he said. "At your pace. Even if it's slow."

Her chest tightened.

"What if I stop?" she asked.

"Then we stop," he said without hesitation.

"What if I pull away?"

"Then I wait."

Her eyes burned.

"No one has ever said that to me."

"I mean it," he said gently. "But I also need honesty."

She nodded. "Then here is mine."

She straightened.

"I want to try," she said. "Not perfectly. Not fast. But honestly."

His breath caught.

"Are you sure?" he asked softly.

She smiled—a little shaky, but real. "No. But I want to be."

He smiled too.

"That's enough."

Outside the café, the sky was turning gold.

They walked side by side, closer now, hands brushing.

Jae stopped suddenly.

"Mireya."

She looked at him.

"I won't touch you unless you want me to."

Her heart raced.

She reached out first.

Her fingers wrapped gently around his hand.

Not tight.

Not hesitant.

Just… there.

He squeezed lightly, like he was afraid to break the moment.

She laughed quietly. "You're holding my hand like it's made of glass."

He smiled. "It kind of is."

They continued walking, hands joined.

The world felt different.

Not louder.

Clearer.

Later that night, Mireya sat alone in her room.

She replayed the day in her mind.

Her phone buzzed.

Jae:

Thank you for today. I know it wasn't easy.

She typed back slowly.

Mireya:

Thank you for not rushing me.

A pause.

Then:

Jae:

I don't want to rush something I plan to protect.

Her heart fluttered.

She set the phone down, pressing her hand to her chest.

For the first time in a long time, her silence wasn't armor.

It was peace.

The next day at work, things felt… lighter.

Mireya smiled more.

She spoke more.

Even laughed.

Hana noticed immediately.

"Oh wow," Hana said. "She's glowing."

Mireya groaned. "Please don't."

"I will absolutely do it," Hana replied. "You're in the 'trying' phase. It's adorable."

Jae passed by, hearing only the word adorable.

He raised an eyebrow. "Should I be concerned?"

"Yes," Hana said. "Very."

Mireya laughed. "Ignore her."

"I can't," Jae said. "She's terrifying."

Later, while cleaning a hallway together, Jae spoke quietly.

"I want you to know something."

She looked at him.

"I'm not expecting a happy ending tomorrow," he said. "I just want today."

She smiled. "Me too."

Then she paused.

"Jae?"

"Yes?"

"If I ever go quiet again…"

"I'll listen anyway."

Her eyes softened.

"That's all I need."

That night, Mireya wrote something in her notebook.

Not a plan.

Not a promise.

Just a sentence.

I chose to stay.

She closed the notebook.

Tomorrow would come with questions, fear, and uncertainty.

But tonight…

She allowed herself to feel content.
