Chapter 46 - Suspicions Arise

Thwack!

An arrow struck through the eye of a Horny Rabbit (no, you dirty lechers, this is not the reason why they're named that!), piercing through its right eye and emerging from the left. With a final death cry, it reared its front paws at the air, as if trying to reach for the stars, before finally flopping to the ground, its tongue lolling to the side, its feet twitching. Before its vision faded, Bunnicorn VII looked up at the white clouds, letting a single drop of tear flow down its pristine, pure-white fur cheek, heart filled with agony at the cruel world's decision to let it die.

Oh, may you be cursed for killing this pure, virgin Horny Rabbit...

"Man, what the fuck was that!?"

~Hmm~Hm~Hmmmm...~

Skinning and gutting the poor rabbit, Mikano hummed a familiar tune she had heard her mother sing to her long before, back when they were still living in the ramshackle hut near the clear rivers of Feonia (and it did not have anything to do with the fact that they were dirt poor, okay!). Those were the days when she felt the most peaceful, when the only thing she had to worry about was whether or not there would be food on the table, or whether or not some random pervert would steal her wet panties...

But it all disappeared after the Shadow Monsters attacked and destroyed her home, killing her mother

She still remembered the sight as her mother got slowly assimilated into the horde, slowly, agonisingly, gradually becoming one of the named Shadows.

Mikano, run, RUN!!!

"Hey, is the rabbit done yet? You do know that I need to cook it as soon as possible, cause if not, it'd be easier for the monsters to spot us 'cause of the smoke..."

Calling from the side, Duval asked Mikano whether or not she was finished, because they needed to quickly eat dinner and rest, for they had only managed to get ahold of 7 Drewlin ears; if they didn't have the rest by tomorrow, their mission would be forfeited, and they'd have to pay a humongous fine, a fine that could only be solved by selling themselves into slavery...

"Fine, here is the damned rabbit! I swear, I thought finding the Drewlins would've been easy, but who would've thought that because of the damn repercussions from the battle at Feonia, every single monster had run away in fear! Now, thanks to a certain loudmouth, we have less than a day to find the remaining three. If not, then..."

Gulping, Mikano nervously looked around, as if the debtors had already arrived. Seeing that it was just the wind, she heaved a sigh of relief before turning her attention back towards her companions:

A lounging Vylara and a munching Natsuki

"To be honest, I don't get why they can't eat our food. They keep on saying things like 'oh, we can't digest our food' or that 'it's all flavourless'. You think that they might be, y'know, members of the Demon King's-"

"SHUSH Mikano! You know full well what they did, and if you dare disparage them, trust me, we'll split up! Haven't you seen the bright green light that Natsuki gave off during the final hour? If he truly was a Shadow Man, he would've killed us all, not saved us! So let's keep it at that, and if I hear anything more, you'll be sorry..."

Taken aback, Mikano just let Duval rant off his head, before seeing him huff off back into his tent, wanting to go to sleep (Vylara said she'd handle the first watch, suspiciously...). Giving a small pout, she gave a final piercing glance towards the two, before returning to her tent, angry at being rebuked for noticing something that obviously raised suspicion.

Honestly though, am I the only dense one here...?

What she didn't realise was that as she turned her back, a pair of green and red eyes gazed at her, squinting at the conversation she overheard between them...
