The very first thing Nina did when she woke up the next morning was check on her seven little eggs.
"Are my babies awake?"
She gently stroked them one by one.
Five of the eggs wobbled energetically in response, while the other two swayed more sluggishly.
Nina guessed those two had just woken up and were still a little dazed.
"Mommy is going out to eat breakfast. You all stay inside nicely and don't roll around too much, okay?"
She carefully tucked the edges of the nest tighter, worried the eggs might tumble out. The nest was starting to feel cramped with all seven of them squeezed together. She made a mental note to build a larger one later.
The eggs gave small wiggles in reply, as if assuring their mother they understood.
"Good babies."
After giving them another affectionate round of pats, Nina went out to wash up and have breakfast.
