Chapter 36 - The Static Slip

Adriana climbed into the "Navigator's Seat" ,a chair made of woven glass that pulsed in sync with her heartbeat.

She gripped the controls, but she didn't look at the dials. She looked at the grey, swirling mist that existed in the "Between" of her own mind.

"Everyone, hold onto something!

she commanded.

The Fixers breached the ceiling. Four massive, spider-like machines dropped into the hangar, their red sensors locking onto the ship.

They raised their compaction-claws, prepared to turn the Icarus into a three-foot cube of scrap.

"Phase us out, Adriana!" Caius yelled, strapping himself into the logic-core.

Adriana didn't push a throttle.

She exhaled. She projected the feeling of being "Lost"bthat specific, hollow sensation she had felt for years in the Museum basement.

She turned the ship into a "Missing Item."

The Icarus-01 didn't move forward, it moved sideways out of reality.

The hangar, the Fixers, and the screaming alarms vanished.

They were plunged into the Sea of Static. Outside the cockpit windows, there was no sky, no stars, and no New York.

There was only a vast, infinite ocean of grey noise and half-formed shapes ,the discarded "Rough Drafts" of the universe.

"We're in the slipstream," Elias whispered, his hands shaking on the manual override.

"The Red Grid can't see us here. To the Overseers, we're just background noise."

But the Sea of Static wasn't empty. Because they were at low power, the ship wasn't "sailing",it was drifting.

And in the grey mist, things began to move. Huge, whale-like shapes made of unrefined data groaned in the distance.

"The 40% is dropping," Caius warned, his watercolor form flickering.

"The Static is abrasive. It's eating the Resonance out of our wings.

If we don't find a 'Current' soon, we're going to dissolve."

Adriana closed her eyes, trying to sense the London Weaver's signal.

But instead of a signal, she felt a Pull.

It wasn't coming from a city. It was coming from a "Ghost-Station" drifting in the middle of the Sea.
