Chapter 33 - Chapter 31 The Serpent's Coil

Alex stood twenty meters from the Arbok, to the spectators in the cliffs above, he looked like a small, fragile and scared boy in a grey uniform facing a monster that could crush houses with its powers.

But Alex wasn't looking at the snake, Instead he was looking at the pattern of its movement and its body.

Arbok reared up, its upper body swaying hypnotically. The hood flared wide, revealing the terrified, screaming face marking on its chest.

[ Ability Triggered: Intimidate ]

A wave of primal dread washed over the arena, it hit Nidorino first, his buddy, usually so aggressive, faltered. Its ears flattened against its skull and it's muscles unlocked, losing their tension. It whined, a low, pathetic sound, and took a step back, shielding itself with its armored shoulder.

"It works on the brain ," Alex analyzed, his voice a calm whisper inside his own head. "It triggers the flight response before the conscious mind can intervene, pokemon biology is absolutely brilliant."

He felt it too, a cold knot in his stomach and the urge to run, he wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead.

"Nidorino," Alex said, he didn't shout just kept his pitch low, grounding. "Look at me."

Nidorino tore its gaze away from the snake's hood and looked at Alex.

"It's just a picture," Alex said. "It's just your imagination, It can't hurt you."

Arbok hissed....a sound which was quite creepy and lunged.

It didn't move like the snakes Alex had seen on TV who usually slithers but it didn't slither; it struck like a whip. One moment it was twenty meters away; the next, a purple blur was closing the distance, fangs bared.

"Dodge! Left!"

Nidorino tried, he threw himself to the side, his claws scrabbling for traction on the loose dirt but he was too slow, the Intimidate had made him hesitant.

CRUNCH.....

Arbok slammed its head into Nidorino's flank....a Headbutt.

The impact lifted the heavy Nidorino off the ground and flew five meters, crashing into the rock wall of the arena with a sickening thud with dust raining down.

The crowd in the stands gasped.

"Get up!" Alex roared, abandoning his calm.

Nidorino groaned, shaking his head, the black Sludge collar at his throat pulsed violently, sending a rush of cool, healing energy into the bruised body and he staggered to his feet, snorting purple mist.

He was hurt but he was truely angry now, the pain had burned away the fear.

"Focus Energy!" Alex commanded.

"Get your head in the game!"

Nidorino roared, his muscles bunching and a orange aura flared around him, sharpening his senses.

Arbok didn't wait, It coiled, preparing to spring again.

"Nidorino can't take another straight attack, it needs brute force " Alex calculated rapidly.

"Horn Attack! Aim for the throat!"

Nidorino charged, he lowered his head, the spear-point horn gleaming, he was like a purple missile.

Arbok waited and watched with cold, slit-pupiled eyes and at the last second, the snake didn't dodge but opened its mouth.

Acid.....

A stream of bubbling purple liquid erupted from Arbok's gullet. It sprayed the ground directly in front of Nidorino.

Nidorino ran straight into the cloud.

Sizzle.....

The acid hit his body, It hissed, eating into the tough hide. Nidorino squeezed his eyes shut, blinded by the fumes, but momentum carried him forward.

He still struck Arbok.

THUD....

The horn connected with the snake's lower coil but Arbok's scales were thick and rubbery as such the blow didn't pierce; it just pushed the snake back a few feet.

Arbok wrapped its tail around Nidorino's leg.

Wrap....

"No!" Alex shouted.

The snake coiled instantly and in a blur of motion, Arbok whipped its body around, encircling his Nidorino and it squeezed.

Creak....

The sound of Nidorino's bones straining was audible even from where Alex stood, Nidorino thrashed, biting at the purple scales, but the Arbok tightened its grip, suffocating the struggle.

Alex stood alone in the center of the arena, his mind racing with possibilities, his Pokemon was trapped and he didn't know what to do.

Up in the tower, Viper watched with a lit cigarette and a coffee, his face impassive, he was waiting for the second Pokemon. He was waiting for Alex to panic and throw out a backup.

"I do have a backup," Alex gritted his teeth and murmured as he looked at the building.

"And I can show you that huh bitch."

He reached into his pocket, his hand closed around the Flashlight, he had replaced the dead batteries with the only power source he had: the Thunder Stone Shard, it was a backup he planned in case of emergencies and he didn't know whether or if it would work...

He had jammed the jagged crystal into the battery compartment, using copper wire from the ruined tripod to bridge the connection.....it was unstable and was waiting to blow off.

"Hey you stupid Anaconda knockoff!" Alex yelled.

He ran toward the centre of the fighting Pokemon.

The crowd went wild and was in shock, trainers didn't fight, they only stood back and shouted commands and running toward a alpha Arbok was complete suicide.

Arbok's head snapped toward Alex. It still had Nidorino wrapped in its coils, squeezing the life out of him, but its eyes were now on the human.

It hissed, a warning.....Stay back or die.

"Let him go," Alex said, stopping ten feet away.

Arbok lunged, it didn't release Nidorino; it just extended its neck, snapping its jaws at Alex like a striking viper.

Alex didn't flinch but raised the flashlight.

"Smile.... Say cheese"

He jammed his thumb onto the switch and the Thunder Stone Shard discharged its energy all at once.

ZZZzzzTTTTTT...FLASH....( he shouted 😂)

It wasn't a beam of light, it was an explosion of pure, white radiance, an arc of electricity jumped from the casing, shorting out the bulb and magnifying the flash a hundred times.

For a split second, the quarry was brighter than noon.

"SHAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

Arbok shrieked, It was a nocturnal predator and its eyes were sensitive, the flash blinded it instantly, burning it's retinas which were adapted for the dark.

It recoiled, its head thrashing wildly and it's grip on Nidorino loosened for a fraction of a second.

"Double Kick! The eyes! Kick the fuckers eyes!"

Nidorino didn't need to see, soon as he felt the grip loosen, he exploded with desperation.

He twisted his body inside the coils and lashed out with his hind legs.

CRACK... ....

His heel connected with Arbok's jaw and the snake roared in pain, uncoiling completely. It slithered back, shaking its head, trying to clear the white spots from its vision.

Nidorino scrambled away, panting heavily. His hide was smoking from the acid and its leg was limping.

Alex stood there, shaking his hand, the flashlight was smoking, the plastic casing melted, so he dropped it.

"Round two," Alex breathed, stepping back to stand beside his Pokémon.

The Arbok recovered and it's vision was blurry, but its anger was crystal clear.

It raised itself up again, higher this time and the hood flared even wider. But this time, it didn't look at Nidorino instead it looked at Alex.

It was completely utterly pissed.

The snake lowered its head, weaving back and forth, it's tongue flicked out, tasting Alex's scent.

Glare....

It wasn't an attack but was a paralyzing gaze.

Alex felt his muscles lock up, a numbness spread from his chest to his limbs and he couldn't move his legs.

"Paralysis," Alex realized with horror.

"It used Glare on me."

Arbok hissed, satisfied and then opened its mouth and purple energy started gathered deep in its throat.

Sludge Bomb........

A high power move, if that hit him then it was game over for him.

"Nidorino..." Alex tried to shout, but his jaw felt stiff.

Nidorino looked at Alex, he saw his trainer frozen and the snake winding up the kill shot, Nidorino didn't run but stepped in front of Alex.

He lowered his horn and dug his claws into the dirt.

The Black Sludge at his throat pulsed violently, responding to the adrenaline and the Poison Barb woven into the collar began to hum.

Arbok fired....

A massive glob of toxic sludge shot through the air like a cannonball.

Nidorino roared, he didn't use any move Alex had taught him but used something primal, Something born of the sheer refusal to die.

He lunged straight at the sludge bomb.
