Ash could use multiple power-up methods. Yet, a Regional Champion always used only one power-up and never learned the others.
Was that logical?
To put it bluntly, Z-Moves only need Z-Crystals. Dynamaxing only needs a Dynamax Band. Mega Evolution needs a Key Stone and a Mega Stone.
Are these things hard to get for a Champion standing at the peak of a region?
But in the anime, the Masters Eight like Leon and Steven only used one power-up method from start to finish.
Especially Leon. In the anime plot, he was the undisputed world-best Trainer who suppressed others by a huge margin. Yet, he was stubborn and only used Dynamax. He did not use Mega Evolution or Z-Moves.
Do not say Leon didn't have them. Ash could easily get Mega Stones and Z-Crystals. If Leon wanted them, how could he lack the resources?
The Kalos and Alola Leagues would provide them to him even if it was just to stay on good terms with a Regional Champion like Leon.
This simply made Leon look foolish. As long as he asked, those power-up methods were within reach. Would a battle-lover like Leon, who pursued the limits of strength, not learn them?
In the finals, Leon used one Dynamax against Ash's three systems. That was actually very unbalanced.
Damian understood that the writers wanted to give Ash a final ending to his journey. But the battle plot of the Masters Eight itself was a mess.
Furthermore, letting Ash use a newly caught team to defeat the main teams that Steven, Cynthia, and Leon had trained for years to become world number one was already hard to believe.
There was no need to let Ash have two more power-up methods than his opponent. Since they were going to let Ash win anyway, why not let him win more cleanly and more fairly?
In the end, Ash's Pikachu had to go into a crazy "power-up from memories" mode to barely beat Leon's Charizard. Aside from the nostalgia, if you look at it rationally, Ash's victory was not very satisfying.
In Damian's view, a top Trainer who knows there is a way to strengthen a Pokémon's combat power but does not try to understand or learn it is not a qualified Trainer at all. That is complete arrogance.
Things like Dynamax have energy spot and field limits, and Terastallization has energy recharge limits, so they are special. But even if you do not use them normally, it is impossible not to learn or understand them when it comes time to use them.
