Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Brand of Vane

The transition of the Syndicate was not a quiet affair. For days, the library was filled with the smell of heavy ink and the sounds of high-level commanders being summoned and dismissed. Dante was rebranding. He was moving away from the old council's methods—no more public executions, no more messy street brawls. He wanted the world to hear his name and think of an invisible, inescapable hand.

Anna was the instrument of this change. She typed the new manifestos, the new codes of conduct, and the secret bank transfers that were draining the Council's old accounts into Dante's private reserves.

"The name Vane is a curse," Dante said one evening. He was standing over her, watching her type the word *Logistics* over a file that clearly detailed weapon smuggling. "It stands for madness. For my father's greed. I want it to stand for order. *My* order."

He reached down, his fingers brushing the back of her neck as he adjusted the collar of her shirt. It was a lingering, proprietary touch. "You're writing the New Testament of this empire, Anna. Doesn't that make you feel powerful?"

"It makes me feel like an accomplice," she muttered, her skin prickling where he touched her.

"There is no such thing as an innocent bystander in this life," Dante whispered, his voice dropping to that husky, dangerous register. "There are only those who hold the pen and those who bleed for it. I've given you the pen. Don't make me regret it."

He leaned in closer, his chest pressing against her shoulder. "I smelled chocolate on you yesterday. We don't have chocolate on the island, Anna. Not the cheap, mainland kind."

Anna's heart hammered. She kept her eyes on the keys. "I found it in the pantry."

"Liar," he breathed. He didn't yell. He didn't threaten. He simply reached around her and pressed a key on the typewriter, forcing a loud *clack* that broke her rhythm. "If I find out you're taking 'gifts' from my men, I'll make you watch what happens to the hands that gave them to you. Do you understand?"

"You're a tyrant," she hissed, turning to face him.

Their faces were inches apart. Dante's eyes were dark, a storm of possessiveness swirling in them. "I am a man who keeps what is his. And right now, Anna, you are the most precious thing in this room."

He stayed there, staring at her lips, the tension so thick it felt like it would snap. He let the silence stretch for a full minute, teasing her with the possibility of a kiss, before he stood up straight and walked away without another word.
