Chapter 32 - What Doesn’t Leave

This wasn't going to stay simple.

It didn't.

Not even a little.

By the time Adrian disappeared through the glass doors and out of the office floor, the space he left behind didn't settle the way it should have.

People moved.

Work resumed.

Milo came back pretending nothing had happened.

Everything looked normal.

But it wasn't.

Iren could feel it.

And the worst part

He couldn't explain what exactly had changed.

"…Okay, I'm back," Milo said, dropping into his chair like he hadn't just abandoned the conversation five minutes ago.

Iren didn't look at him.

"Congratulations."

"What did he want?"

"Nothing."

"That's not believable."

"It's accurate."

Milo turned his chair slightly.

"He just came up to you, said a few cryptic things, and left?"

"Yes."

"That's worse."

"I know."

Iren leaned forward again, eyes on his screen.

Numbers.

Columns.

Something he could control.

Something that made sense.

But the focus didn't hold.

Because his mind kept looping back
