In Moscow…
Mrs. Santiago came out of the bathroom, dressed in her cotton bathrobe. Her husband was seated on the bed, mindlessly changing the channels on the television.
Mrs. Santiago took a seat on her vanity table, where there were plenty of products that were ready for her to apply to her body to get rid of wrinkles and make her look years younger than her age.
Her expression was troubled. She was physically present but her mind was completely elsewhere. She was still thinking back to the question that Verena had asked her two days ago.
She and her husband had made sure to raise Verena with the utmost care, never allowing her to make any mistakes in her life. In their world, mistakes were not allowed, especially not for a lady.
They were hiding a secret from her, a secret that might change the way Verena sees them if she ever uncovered them. But from her question, Mrs. Santiago was sure that Verena knew something, and it wouldn't be long before she found out the truth.
