Chapter 312 - Before the End

"Hmm."

The masked man's voice drifted. Around him, existence itself had stagnated completely. Time no longer flowed. Wind no longer moved. Even the distant horizon appeared trapped inside a painted frame, locked within an instant where nothing could advance and nothing could decay. Grass remained bent exactly where the wind had last touched it, dust hung motionless in the air, and the six Founders surrounding him stood frozen mid-assault with their divine powers suspended in unfinished motion, unable to complete the violence they had already begun.

Only two things remained exempt from the absolute stillness.

Him.

And the unseen presence watching from beyond the boundaries of existence itself.

The Chroma, the force that allowed existence to flow, evolve, and continue, had been forcibly interrupted by his will. He had reached directly into the current of existence and clenched it shut with his hands. In response, all things had stagnated instantly beneath the weight of his authority. Every law, every movement, every living thought had been halted.

Except for the small sphere surrounding him.

The masked man groaned softly beneath the golden sun engraved upon the black surface of his mask before tilting his head toward the silent heavens above.

"Do you truly need to narrate this much, Author?" he asked dryly. "The boy has already seen enough. Surely that satisfies your curiosity."

No answer came.

The horizon remained silent.

The skies did not tremble, and reality itself offered no response whatsoever. For several moments he simply stood there, staring upward at the unmoving heavens as though expecting existence itself to blink in discomfort beneath his gaze.

Eventually, he sighed.

"Very well," he murmured quietly. "It seems you wish to show the Unwritten this battle in full."

A slow shiver crawled down his spine as he spoke those words, and beneath the mask his smile thinned slightly.

"I can already feel them."

His gaze drifted somewhere far beyond the visible world, beyond the fractured skies and halted gods.

"Their eyes."

The grass beneath his feet darkened subtly as his presence intensified.

"They watch us endlessly," he continued. "They peer into our suffering and consume it like entertainment. They mourn us one moment and celebrate our deaths the next. To them, our agony is spectacle. Our wars are stories. Our lives are merely pages."

His voice lowered.

"And yet they are no freer than we are."

Slowly he raised the slender onyx blade resting in his hand, and dragged it through the grass beside him. The earth split silently in its wake, exposing fractures in reality that revealed distant stars, collapsing worlds, and impossible voids hidden beneath the surface of reality itself.

"Like mice observing ants," he said quietly, "they believe themselves above us simply because they watch from afar. They consume narrative after narrative, endlessly hungry and endlessly unsatisfied, never realizing there are realities beyond even their comprehension."

His tone softened then, almost pitying.

"Countless greater existences above them. Countless lesser ones beneath them. An infinite chain where every observer is also being observed."

The masked man turned slowly and looked upon the six frozen figures surrounding him.

His friends.

The Black Lion.

The Mother of All Dragons.

The Original Arcana.

The Pale Monarch.

The Cowardly Flame.

The Unyielding Steel.

Even frozen in time, their presence dominated the landscape. Divine power warped the halted world around them simply through their existence alone, bending the still air and fractured heavens with pressure vast enough to suffocate creation itself.

The masked man smiled beneath his mask.

"No matter," he said softly. "If this is what the greater narrative demands… then I shall gladly pay its price."

He lifted his gaze toward the heavens once more.

"Because I know how this story ends."

A dangerous warmth entered his voice.

"We will suffer. We will die. We will betray one another. Entire worlds will burn because of the choices made here today…"

His grip around the black blade tightened.

"But in the end…"

The air around him distorted violently.

"…we shall bathe in glory."

A pulse of power spread outward across the frozen battlefield.

"…and happiness."

Then his voice became colder.

"And if the narrative refuses to grant me the ending I desire…"

The ground beneath his feet cracked apart.

"…then I shall force reality itself to accept it."

The still world trembled violently around him as the mask tilted upward slightly, as though staring directly at something far beyond creation itself.

"I swear this upon my name as Kealix von Eskarion."

The Chroma surrounding him began to stir once more.

"Even you, Author, shall fail to stop my will from becoming reality."

A faint laugh escaped him.

"That…"

Then the frozen winds exploded outward.

"…is a promise."

And in the next instant, time resumed.

The Chroma flowed once more, and reality snapped violently back into motion. The six Founders surged toward Kealix in the exact same moment they had been frozen, completely unaware that eternity itself had briefly paused around them.

Divine pressure detonated across the battlefield as their powers collided with the world once more, tearing apart continents merely through their release.

Unyielding Steel moved first.

The god strode forward with overwhelming force, silver armor gleaming beneath the fractured heavens while countless weapons materialized around him in spiraling formations. Spears, swords, halberds, axes, entire arsenals hovered in the sky.

His white hair whipped violently through the dry winds as divine pressure radiated from his armored form.

"SURRENDER, KEALIX!"

Then the weapons launched.

Thousands.

Perhaps millions.

An endless storm of steel crossed the battlefield instantly. Spears split apart the sky itself while colossal blades screamed through the air like executioners descending upon creation. Axes, halberds, and swords formed a tidal wave of destruction vast enough to bury worlds beneath it.

Kealix merely smiled beneath his mask.

Then he raised one hand.

Reality bent.

Every weapon twisted violently away from him at impossible angles, their trajectories rewritten in mid-flight as though causality itself had been forced to obey his will. The redirected storm tore through the fabric of the Tower as it passed, carving glowing fractures into reality itself. Through those wounds, distant celestial bodies became visible for brief moments, dying stars collapsing into darkness, shattered universes imploding silently, impossible dimensions writhing beyond comprehension.

Kealix's expression hardened beneath the mask.

"Can none of you understand?" he asked quietly. "Everything I am doing…"

His voice focused.

"…is to save you."

He never finished the sentence.

Behind the Founder line, flame and frost erupted simultaneously as two divine figures emerged together. The Cowardly Flame stepped forward first, his dark skin burning with overwhelming heat while glaciers formed across his body in equal measure, opposing forces existing in harmony.

Beside him stood the Pale Monarch, graceful and terrifying all at once, ivory hair flowing like liquid sunlight while her white garments danced untouched through the surrounding chaos.

The Pale Monarch lifted a single hand.

"You cannot move."

Reality obeyed her command.

For one infinitesimally brief instant, the concept of motion abandoned Kealix's body completely.

The Cowardly Flame unleashed his attack immediately.

A beam of condensed heat erupted forward, a torrent so catastrophic that space itself melted around it.

Entire regions of the Tower vaporized in its path before the blast struck Kealix directly and hurled him across the heavens like a falling star.

The world shattered beneath the impact.

Kealix tore through mountains, dimensions, and fragments of reality itself before finally reaching out and grabbing the beam with both hands. His body trembled violently as divine fire consumed everything around him, yet the masked god roared and split the inferno apart through sheer force alone.

Even then, however, his thoughts remained cold.

'Damn it.'

He steadied himself in midair.

'Nearly all the seals are already in place…'

His gaze narrowed toward the Founders gathered in the distance.

'I cannot defeat them like this.'

Then another light ignited above him.

A second beam descended from the heavens.

The Mother of Dragons had attacked.

The original Bloodscale spread colossal crimson-and-black wings across the sky while destruction gathered within her maw. The pressure radiating from the dragon's breath warped gravity itself before she unleashed the attack downward in a catastrophic torrent powerful enough to erase worlds.

Kealix hissed sharply and raised his hand.

Reality folded before him into an immense barrier.

The dragonfire collided against it.

The sky ruptured.

The ground collapsed.

Entire sections of reality peeled apart beneath the pressure while Kealix struggled to maintain the construct against the overwhelming force pressing down upon him.

Then a voice echoed softly across the battlefield.

"Shatter."

Kealix's eyes widened.

The Original Arcana had intervened.

The god of change altered the very nature of Kealix's barrier in a single instant.

And the dragonfire tore through it effortlessly.

The beam slammed directly into Kealix.

He caught the torrent with both hands while the sheer force drove him backward across reality itself, yet even then he refused to yield.

Then the skies darkened.

The Black Lion descended.

A divine predator clad in absolute rejection.

Kealix snarled and hurled the dragonfire upward toward the descending Founder, sending the devastating beam crashing directly into him.

It changed nothing.

The Black Lion rejected the attack entirely.

Because rejection itself was his domain.

The beam dispersed harmlessly around him before the Lion struck the battlefield like a meteor. The Tower trembled violently as entire realities shook from the impact alone. Kealix leapt backward across the shattered earth before finally stopping several kilometers away.

The Founders gathered around him once more.

Then the Pale Monarch stepped forward.

"You still wear that mask, my love?"

Her voice carried sorrow.

"I am glad."

Her golden eyes softened slightly as she looked at him.

"But you must stop this. Please. You are ill. Let us help you before you destroy yourself completely."

Kealix stood silently for several moments before laughing quietly beneath the mask.

"Ill?" he repeated softly.

His laughter deepened.

"Do you mean mad?"

His gaze met hers directly.

"Is it madness to sacrifice oneself for those they love?"

The Pale Monarch's expression hardened despite the pain visible in her eyes.

"You seek your own destruction," she replied. "How could that ever save anyone?"

Her voice trembled faintly now.

"He is still recovering. If you die now, reality itself will suffer for it. We cannot allow that."

Silence followed.

Then Kealix spoke again, his voice quieter now.

"So even if I willingly choose this fate…"

His grip tightened around the black blade.

"…you will continue fighting until you save me from myself?"

Uneasy tension spread among the Founders.

Then slowly, one after another, they nodded.

Kealix stared at them in silence for several long seconds.

Then madness bloomed behind the mask.

"I see."

He began laughing again.

A terrible laugh filled with grief, affection, rage, and inevitability all at once.

"I SEE!"

Darkness exploded outward around him as the black blade screamed through reality itself, carving fractures across existence with every pulse of power.

"Then change of plans!"

The heavens trembled violently.

"If I alone cannot perish…"

His voice became monstrous.

"…THEN ALL OF US SHALL!"
