Chapter 10 - Armament

Jim had put a lot of thought into this, since he had years of planning and accumulation. The first thing he considered was the kind of weapons he would introduce to this world. From inception, humanity had been killing each other. They got good at it, and they also made tools to assist in this endeavor.

In the world that Jim came from, the weapons used by humanity were so advanced, which meant that the process of making them was also complicated and involved several industries.

Given that Jim was working solo, he needed something he could create with the tools at his disposal, without too much hassle. Also, since he had introduced the weapon, he needed to hand over the production to trusted aides, and if he made the weapons too complicated, only he would be able to make them.

He decided that since his army would be facing people wielding bows and arrows, machetes, clubs, and in some cases, swords, there was no need for heat-seeking missiles and space-bending projectiles.

Therefore, to keep things simple, Jim designed the weapons based on the models used by humans way back in the terrestrial days, when man still roamed the earth.

The handgun was modeled after the popular handguns of back then such as the Glock. As for the rifle, it was a remake of the most popular assault rifle of the time, the AK-47. This was mostly because of its simplicity and ease of use.

The sniper rifle similarly followed the same idea. A combination of the designs of the then sniper rifles. Contemporary sniper rifles were so powerful that they could target someone on a different continent, or planet. Jim did not have a need for such, yet.

One thing he did pay attention to was the scope. The handgun and assault rifles could use iron sights, but the sniper rifle needed a proper scope to maximize its effective range. The first scope he'd ever made had taken three weeks, but once he figured it out, the rest were easier to make.

Once the soldiers were armed, Jim also had to worry about their armor as well. Kevlar were too advanced for his needs, so he fashioned a chainmail that could even catch a bullet from a rifle. He liked it because it was lowtech, but not easy to build. He then covered it with camouflage-colored leather. He also built a sturdy helmet, capable of deflecting arrows from the enemy.

Once the soldier was fully armed, they looked quite intimidating. When they moved together, it was quite a sight to see. The discipline and uniformity making the group appear as one. This is the essence of military development.

Several miles away, the horde was making good ground. They all moved in a hurried manner, as though they could hardly wait to get there.

After crossing a river, they had not had any food or drink since. You'd think this would weaken them, but it seemed to fuel them. It also seemed to add a layer of savagery. They wanted to eat the enemy's flesh and drink their blood, and they could barely contain themselves.

The group had already crossed the plains and were now feeling the cool air of the highlands. If they noticed, you wouldn't tell because they didn't even bring it up. All that was in their minds was the upcoming raid, and the glorious loot they would obtain.

just because they were savages did not mean they lacked the ability to think, and dream big. Some were quite ambitious, while others dreamed of sleeping with as many Asis women as they could. The Asis maidens were known to be quite beautiful and well fed, giving the illusion of health.

One among them overflowed with ambition. Bamboo was his name. He was the leader of the shock troops. While the barbarians were known to be quite strong, those who led the attacks were even more so. Their muscles were rippling out of their body, and they seemed the kind to kill with just a blow.

To led such a group, Bamboo stood out in both his strength and his cunning. More often than not, he had succeeded in toppling renown kingdoms in a day. This wasn't just about strength, which they had plenty of. Cunning was also an important quality. Barbarians were not bothered by such notions as honor and glory, they just needed to get the job done.

Over the past engagements, Bamboo and his group had been very instrumental in squashing whatever defense the enemy had placed. To them, these defenses could barely be considered an irritant.

Deep inside, Bamboo desired more than just glory on the battlefield. He saw himself as the second King of the Zithilites, and he was going to do everything he could to rise up the ranks. This meant he treated every battle as a stepping stop, a chance to rise to the very top.

He had no opinions about the Asis, they were just another obstacle in his way to the top. He had made a vow that he would kill any and everything that stood in his way, and now they were on his way.

Even though they were quite far, the group was showing early signs of organization. The scouts led the way, while the shield bearers were at the front. Bamboo could be seen giving orders, but he was not in the frontline. Rather, he was among those holding up the rear of the shock troops.

Here, he felt safe. Very little could threaten him while he was in the back, since his allies were also tailing behind. What enemy would be so suicidal that they would sandwich themselves between two forces?

Little did he know that since he left, a drone had been keeping tabs on him and his cronies. By now, Jim already knew the direction they were heading, and had already identified a suitable spot for an ambush. His people were already in place, now, he was just counting down the time.

Something was nagging Bamboo. Up ahead, the road dipped into a valley. Bamboo did not want to give up the high ground, and this was not just because he was paranoid. His instincts, horned through life and death, were screaming at him, telling him something was definitely wrong.

He noticed it, how quiet the forest was. This was no easy feat, especially considering how rowdy the horde was. There were no birds chirping, none of the usual sounds of the wild. Immediately, he raised his hand to signal the hornblower, and that was the last thing he ever did.

Tah!

Sounding like someone cracking firewood from very far away, a sound was heard from a distance. That very instance, Bamboo's head exploded into a pink mist, showering the people around him with his blood.

Tah! Tah! Tah!

The people around him had not even had the time to process what happened when more sounds rocked the atmosphere. Several sounds started coming off the various sides of the valley. No one could pinpoint where they were coming from due to the echoes in the valley.

One thing they were sure of, with every new sound, someone important would fall. Jim was not wasting his sniper bullets on common footsoldiers. There were people for that.

"Attack!" Once it became clear that people were dropping all around them, the fearless horde was hesitant to take any action. They were not used to fleeing, but now they found themselves in a danger they couldn't get out of. Seeing them frozen, Jim would not let such a golden chance pass him by.

The person given the command was the horn blower. Even being so far, the sound of the horn pierced the valley, signalling all the hidden troops to come out.

Suddenly, all around them, the valley walls seemed to come alive as dozens of men came out of hidding. Each held an assault rifle, and they started raining hell on these shock troops.

On cue and with practiced ease, each of the men under Jim's command found a target to shoot at, and they would generally find their mark. The valley exploded with sounds of gunfire, until none of the enemies were left standing.

"Cease fire!" Jim shouted as he observed the battleground. Since this was an ambush, he would not allow a single person to escape and warn the enemies behind. He only gave this order after everyone was eliminated.

"Give the signal to proceed to the next part of the plan," Jim said as he cocked his gun and got down from his firing position. His soldiers did not come for war, this was a hunt.
