The darkness was absolute.
No emergency lights. No flicker. No sound but breathing.
Jun's heart pounded so loud he was certain everyone could hear it.
— …Ren?, he whispered.
— Don't move, Ren replied calmly.
A single light ignited at the far end of the chamber.
Not harsh.
Clinical.
It illuminated a figure standing between the shelves.
Tall.Unarmed.Dressed in a long coat that bore no insignia.
His presence alone made the air feel… measured.
— I was hoping you'd find this place on your own, the man said.
Ryuji stepped forward instinctively.
— Stay back.
The man's gaze flicked toward him.
Ryuji stopped mid-step.
Not frozen.
Discouraged.
— Interesting…, the man murmured.— You still rely on instinct.
His eyes shifted to Kaito.
— And you rely on refusal.
Kaito's blood ran cold.
— You know me.
The man smiled faintly.
— We know of you.
Ren raised Second Hand slowly.
— You shouldn't be here.
The man tilted his head.
— Neither should you.
He gestured casually.
The darkness peeled back.
Screens ignited along the walls—ancient monitors waking one by one.
On them: names. Symbols. Status indicators.
At the center:
ZERO – ACTIVE
— The signal you released earlier…, the man continued.— That wasn't subtle.
Kaito clenched his fists.
— Who are you?
The man regarded him thoughtfully.
— I am an Observer.
Jun frowned.
— That's not a name.
— It's a function, the man replied.
Ren's voice was low.
— Which division?
The Observer's smile widened slightly.
— You remember more than you should.
He turned to Kaito.
— You crossed a threshold tonight.
— And now?, Kaito asked.
The Observer stepped closer.
The pressure in the room intensified.
— Now…, he said calmly,— we decide if you are a variable…
He paused.
— Or a liability.
The lights flared.
The archive chamber trembled.
And somewhere deep in the system—
A decision was being made.
