Chapter 12 - The road into shadow

The guild hall buzzed with constant activity, like a hive that never truly slept.

Adventurers came and went, muddy boots striking the polished wooden floor, voices overlapping in an endless hum. The scent of old wood mixed with oiled steel and freshly unrolled parchment filled the air.

Rael stood before the mission board, arms crossed, eyes fixed on the posted requests as if they might change on their own. Beside him, Lyo was far less still. He checked his pack for the third time, adjusted the strap of his weapon, then glanced again at the mission sheet that had already been taken down.

"You're going to wear a hole in it if you keep staring," Rael said calmly.

"I'd rather that than miss a detail," Lyo replied without looking up.

Their gear was ready. Supplies counted, potions secured, maps carefully stored in leather cases. Nothing was left to chance. At least, in theory.

Then something shifted behind them.

Not silence exactly. Something subtler.

Measured footsteps.

Selena appeared first, walking with her usual composed confidence. Her posture was straight, her gaze sharp. Neither rushed nor slow, she moved as if she belonged exactly where she was. An invisible sense of order seemed to follow her.

Blanek walked behind her, hands behind his head, wearing that relaxed smile that made it seem like he was heading out for a stroll instead of a dangerous mission.

"So," he said, stopping near them, "today's the day we walk straight into trouble."

Lyo quickly stepped up to the counter and handed the mission sheet to the receptionist. The young woman's smile widened, clearly excited that the request had finally been accepted.

"Mission registered. Participants: Rael, Lyo, Selena, Blanek. Good luck to all of you."

Selena approached Lyo and glanced briefly at the document as it was filed away.

"Well done," she said calmly. "Fast, clear, efficient. Keep it up."

Lyo felt heat rush to his face. He nodded, unsure how to respond, eyes drifting briefly to the floor. Rael watched quietly. He noted Lyo's reaction, how a single compliment could unsettle him. A small part of him wondered if he would ever be that methodical himself.

They gathered off to the side for a final discussion.

"Simple mission on paper," Blanek said. "Which usually means it's lying."

"Abandoned villages are never empty without a reason," Selena added. "Expect territorial creatures. Or worse."

They checked their gear one last time. Torches. Rope. Rations. Healing potions. Antidotes. Everything was there.

When they finally stepped through the guild's massive doors, the outside air felt strangely calm.

The Road and the First Battles

The path toward the old village was narrow, swallowed by vegetation. Moss covered the stones, roots breaking through the pavement in places. Twisted trees lined the road, their branches seeming to close behind the group as they passed.

At first, they walked in silence. Everyone conserved their breath. Their thoughts.

Then came the growl.

A wolf burst from the bushes, its eyes glowing with an unnatural red. Two more followed close behind.

"Contact!" Rael shouted.

The fight was rough and poorly coordinated. Rael barely blocked a snapping jaw. Blanek swung too wide. Lyo hesitated for a split second before using his magic, while Selena burned one of the wolves down with a sharp gesture.

The encounters kept coming. Giant spiders dropped from trees. Living roots lashed out. A massive tree trunk cracked and rose, animated by something dark, attempting to crush them.

Fatigue crept in.

After one especially messy fight, Selena raised a hand.

"Stop. We're scattered. This isn't working."

She studied them briefly before continuing.

"Rael, Blanek. You're close-combat specialists. Work together."

"Lyo, with me. Fire and gravity. Control and finish."

No one argued.

The difference was immediate.

Rael analyzed movement, drew attention, anticipated attacks. Blanek struck where it hurt most, forcing openings. On the other side, Selena restrained and burned enemies down while Lyo compressed space, crushing and preventing escape.

The battles became almost… fluid.

As the sun began to sink, the monsters thinned out. The road stretched ahead in an unsettling quiet.

"The village isn't far now," Lyo muttered.

No one replied.

The Camp

Night fell quickly.

They set up camp away from the road, surrounded by stones and subtle magic barriers. The fire crackled softly, casting dancing shadows across the ground.

Blanek cleaned a cut on his arm, laughing as he told stories about the guild trials. Lyo ate quietly, focused. Selena traced symbols into the dirt, already planning for the next day.

Rael sharpened his sword. The steady sound of stone against steel matched the rhythm of his thoughts.

The wind stirred the trees. A distant owl cried.

The abandoned village was close. Unseen, yet present. As if it were already watching them.

Rael stared into the flames and spoke quietly.

"Tomorrow… it really begins."

No one disagreed.

Under the star-filled sky, they all knew this road was only the beginning.

And whatever waited within that dungeon would not be satisfied with merely frightening them.
