Ember pov
I froze right there on the edge of the mattress. My heart skipped a beat, and not in a good way. The air in the room got so heavy, it felt like the walls were closing in. I heard ,Evander moving behind me with a low, terrifying growl that sounded like a beast.
Before I could even blink, he was a blur of motion. He crossed the room in a second, his face twisted in pure rage.
I grabbed him from behind. "Please don't do this," I pleaded.
I watched him pull , his fist back.
"Evander, stop!" I shrieked.
I moved forward and threw myself in the way, my small hands pressing against his rock-solid chest. I could feel the heat radiating off him, and his heart was thumping like a war drum under his ribs. His eyes were glowing that bright, scary silver, fixed right on his brother.
"Move, Ember," he hissed. His voice had vibration that shook my very bones.
"I can't , if I do that you will kill him," I stood in front of him. Spreading my arms open shielding cassian.
"What's so special about this woman?" Cassian asked, gripping his chest. "Don't you think you're becoming too over protective." He added.
"Still talking," he looked at Cassian, with a deadly grin.
"See? That look, right there. That is exactly what I'm talking about." Cassian said, raising a finger pointing directly at Evander's direction, while trembling.
A slow, sharp smile pulled at Evander's mouth.
"Look at that. Half-dead and still stupid." he said, with a smirk.
His voice was soft, but filled with authority, which made it even more terrifying.
"He's not worth your rage," I whispered.
"He touched you. He insulted you. And now he's running his mouth while you're trying to save his miserable life. I'm going to end him." He tried to move further , but I grabbed his hand pulling him back.
"You've proved you can end him any time you want," I said softly, rubbing his hand.
"If he was aware of that, then he should be careful with his words and action, don't you think so?" He asked glaring at me.
"He is only trying to provoke you. If you kill him now you will be considered a tyrant.
Silence followed.
"I'm not doing this for him," he said softly. "I'm doing it because you asked."
"Thank you," I said.
He drew in a slow breath, the tension in his shoulders easing by a fraction. He looked over my head at Cassian, who was still wearing that disgusting, weak smirk.
"If he breathes a word of that filth again," Evander growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, "I won't just punch him. I'll rip his tongue out myself, and make his death look like an accident."
"He won't," I said. Looking at Cassian, "unless he has a death wish." I added, watching him lower his gaze.
"Let's get this over with," Evander said, feeling frustrated.
"Uhmm," I nodded.
He didn't move away, though. He stayed right there, hovering over me like a giant shadow while I turned back to the bed. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely focus. I went back to rubbing Cassian's feet, pushing every bit of light I had into his system just to get it over with. I didn't look at Cassian's face. I didn't want to see his eyes.
Once the fever finally broke and his skin stopped looking sickening, I stood up and wiped my sweaty palms on my silk dress . I felt dizzy, the healing taking everything out of me.
I almost fell but Evander got me in time, with his hand grabbing my waist.
