Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Team Introduction (1)

I woke up with a minor headache, laying flat on my back. I groaned as I sat upright, rubbing my forehead.

"Ah! The Nara has finished his nap, I see. So good of you to join us, Kagen." Ren said, lifting a juice box into the air in a salute with his left hand.

He, Kenji and Misa were all sitting on a red-white, checkered blanket. There was a brown, woven basket next to Ren that he was pulling sandwiches and snacks out of. The crazy man had set up a picnic on literal scorched earth.

"How bad did we lose?" I asked, standing up and walking over to join them.

"Don't be like that, Kagen. You all did surprisingly well. I was impressed by your teamwork. There's room to improve, but that's what I'm here for."

"So…" I said hesitantly. "Does that mean you'll be our sensei?"

Ren nodded, taking a big bite of his sandwich. "Welcome to team four!" he announced, talking with his mouth full of half-chewed sandwich chunks. He reached behind him and tossed three dark streaks, one towards each of Kenji, Misa and I.

I caught mine and looked at it. It was a black headband with a steel plate etched with a stylized leaf, a Konoha headband.

"Alright!" Kenji cheered, leaping up to his feet and holding the headband aloft like it was a trophy.

Misa had a proud smile on her face as she gently ran a thumb over the leaf on the headband, unable to take her eyes off it.

For my part, I just wound it around my head, wanting to know what it felt like to have it on. It felt pretty darn good.

"Now before we move further, Kagen would you mind turning my hand back to normal." Ren said showing his left hand that had been turned into crystal from his shoulder down.

"I did not do anything since when I tried to break whatever that is on a rock that suffered from the same thing like my hand, the rock disappeared into just particles." Ren said dryly

I replied with a smile on my face, "It's good sensei that you did not try to do anything to it. Because if you did, your arm would have had suffered the fate as that rock."

It felt good that while we had lost, I would have taken down an arm of a Jonin permanently. That was quite a feat for a newly minted genin.

And it just showed me why Crystal Release was so broken and overpowered.

I put my palm on the crystalized hand of sensei and the crystal started breaking and fell down in pieces. Sensei arm was unharmed as he moved it around. I was pretty sure that he let out a sigh after seeing his arm unharmed.

"Since we're a team now, we should introduce ourselves." Sensei said. He completed ignored the fact that he would have been handicapped if he had tried breaking the crystal.

"I'll go first. Ahem. My name is Ren Hayashi. I like spending time in the sun and dislike goodbyes. In the future, I want to be able to spoil lots of little grandchildren."

"You have kids, sensei?" Kenji asked.

"No." Sensei denied. "Your turn, Kenji."

"Um…right." Kenji said, turning from sensei to Misa and I. "My name is Kenji Aoki. I like good food and don't like rude people. I want to be a strong ninja and become a jonin someday!"

"A good goal, Kenji. Work hard, and one day you might even be as good as your sensei. Now, Misa?" Ren said expectantly.

Misa bowed her head shallowly. "My name is Misa Hyuga. I enjoy training with my friends and do not like being idle. I hope to serve Konoha well and one day teach my children to be even stronger than I am."

Ren smiled. "I guess we have something in common then! Family is the greatest treasure in the world. Okay, Kagen. It's your turn."

As far as ice-breakers went, this whole introduction thing felt a little played out, but it did the job well enough, so I said, "My name is Kagen Nara. I like to train, experimenting with new jutsus and shadows and don't like when the sun tears through all my nice shadows. I want to become one of the strongest ninja in the world."

Ren was looking at me appraisingly. "Ambitious little genin, aren't you? And are you sure that you are a Nara?"

I shrugged. "If I aim for the moon, the worst that will happen is I miss and end up among the stars. And Yes I am sure that I am a Nara. The Naras had me tested. I am pretty sure that they had conducted a blood test to make sure I am one when I woke up in the morning to train for 3 days straight."

Ren smiled warmly as he chuckled a little. "That's a great mentality, Kagen. I'm glad to meet you all and am looking forward to teaching you. Now that that's done with, let's talk about the test!" Ren-sensei said, motioning for us to sit and eat with him.

"Let's start with the giant cloud of rainbow coloured mist in the room, shall we? Kagen, mind telling your kind-hearted sensei why you tried to turn your sensei into a crystal statue and most importantly how you were able to turn the entire training ground into crystals?"

I shrugged. "You're a jonin. I knew you'd be able to dodge it, and I did warn you before I used it just in case."

He nodded. "Fair, but what even was that?"

Now how do I tell my sensei that his little genin had a Kekkei Tōta without looking like I was bragging about it. Oh and how do I tell about this to Misa who was glaring dageers at me.
