Some men did not fear consequences.
They studied them.
King Virajas of Kalinga was one such man.
He ruled well enough to be praised, harshly enough to be feared, and cleverly enough to believe himself untouchable. When news of Krishna's interventions reached him, he did not panic.
He smiled.
"Balance," Virajas mused aloud, reclining on his throne. "A man who claims balance must react to imbalance."
His minister hesitated. "My king… perhaps restraint—"
Virajas waved him away. "No law has been broken yet."
That was the point.
The system chimed in Krishna's awareness hours before the message arrived.
«Intent Detected.
Classification: Calculated Provocation.
Subject: King Virajas.
Objective: Force Reaction Without Technical Violation.»
Krishna opened his eyes.
"So," he said quietly, "a test."
Arjuna frowned. "What kind?"
Krishna smiled faintly. "The annoying kind."
Virajas announced a public decree.
No land seizure.
No executions.
No forced labor.
Instead—
A "Festival of Strength."
All men of fighting age were "invited" to compete.
Refusal would mark them as cowards—unfit for future service.
No punishment.
No coercion.
Only social erasure.
Families watched sons step forward unwillingly.
Children watched fathers smile through dread.
Dharma had not been violated—
Only bent until it bled.
The system chimed, unusually dry.
«Legal Manipulation Detected.
Ethical Harm: High.
Technical Violation: None.
Annoyance Level: Extreme.»
Krishna chuckled softly.
"He thinks loopholes protect him," Arjuna said.
"They protect him from law," Krishna replied. "Not from me."
Krishna did not go immediately.
He waited.
Long enough for tension to bloom.
Long enough for Virajas to feel confident.
Then Krishna arrived—
Not in disguise.
Not announced.
He simply walked into the festival grounds.
The crowd felt it.
Not fear.
Stillness.
Virajas stood from his seat slowly.
"So," the king said, smiling broadly. "You honor my festival."
Krishna inclined his head. "I observe it."
Virajas gestured grandly. "Strength builds unity. Discipline. Pride."
Krishna looked at the participants.
"At the clenched jaws.
The forced laughter.
The women holding children too tightly."
"Does it?" Krishna asked softly.
Virajas laughed. "No rule forbids this."
The system chimed, amused and sharp.
«Loophole Confidence Detected.
Prepare Conceptual Correction.»
Krishna turned to the crowd.
"Who is here by choice?" he asked.
Silence.
He nodded.
"Who would leave if allowed?"
Every hand rose.
Virajas stiffened.
"You're interfering," he snapped.
Krishna looked back at him calmly. "No. I'm clarifying."
Virajas sneered. "You said balance. Not dominance."
Krishna smiled gently.
"Balance," he agreed, "is not passive."
The air shifted.
Not violently.
Decisively.
Krishna raised his hand—not to command, but to permit.
"You may leave," he told the people.
They hesitated.
Virajas shouted, "Anyone who moves—"
Krishna's gaze met his.
Virajas stopped mid-breath.
Not silenced by force.
By certainty.
The system chimed.
«Authority Transfer: Temporary.
Consent-Based Override Engaged.»
The crowd dispersed.
Quietly.
Quickly.
Virajas trembled—not in fear, but rage.
"You didn't punish me," he hissed.
"No," Krishna said. "I removed your theater."
Virajas slammed his staff against the ground. "You can't rule this way!"
Krishna stepped closer.
"I don't rule," he said softly.
"I correct."
The king swallowed.
"Did I break dharma?" Virajas demanded.
Krishna's voice was calm.
"You attempted to weaponize it."
Silence fell.
Krishna turned away.
The system chimed, satisfied.
«Test Failed.
Balance Integrity: Upheld.
Psychological Deterrence: Effective.»
As Krishna departed, Virajas sank back into his throne.
He had not been punished.
But he had been seen.
And that was worse.
Arjuna exhaled. "He'll never try that again."
Krishna nodded. "Nor will others."
Radha smiled faintly when she heard.
"They'll stop trying to trick you," she said.
Krishna laughed softly. "No."
"They'll just get better at hiding."
The system chimed cheerfully.
«Good.
Stories Need Smarter Villains.»
Krishna looked out at the world—
Balanced.
For now.
