Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Beast of the Outer Valley

The sun barely pierced through the thick veil of mist in the Outer Valley, its pale light reflecting off the jagged cliffs and twisted roots of the ancient trees. Lui Yan's robes were dust-streaked and his breath came in measured bursts, each inhalation tasting faintly of herbs and sweat. The morning chill had seeped into his bones, but he did not notice; all his attention was fixed on the rumbling that shook the ground beneath their feet.

Ahead, the massive beast emerged from the shadows - a creature whose very aura seemed to warp the air around it. Its scales shimmered like fractured glass, each one reflecting light differently, making its form both solid and ghostly at the same time. A low growl rolled from deep within its throat, vibrating through the rocks and into their chests.

Chen Wuying's eyes gleamed with arrogance as he stepped forward, his Foundation Establishment qi flaring faintly around his fists. "This is your fight, junior?" he sneered, his tone sharp enough to cut through the tension. "I could end it in a moment, but I want to see if your so-called instincts are worth anything."

Lui Yan said nothing. He didn't need to. His gaze never left the beast. Every twitch of its tail, every flicker of its eyes, every tremor in the ground - all of it spoke to him. Unlike others, he did not rely on brute strength alone. He observed, calculated, and waited.

Lin Yumo, unable to contain his energy, lunged forward recklessly, waving his hands in the air. "I'll distract it! Hit it while it's confused!"

"Careful!" Lui Yan called, his voice taut with warning. "Don't rush in blindly!"

But Lin's grin was unshakable. With a flourish, he summoned a rudimentary formation, igniting sparks that circled him like a protective net. The beast's gaze snapped toward the flashing light, its roar shaking the treetops.

-

Yan Mei stayed close to Lui Yan, quietly chanting a low incantation to reinforce protective wards. Her calm, steady presence grounded him, reminding him that he was not alone.

The beast charged, its massive claws gouging the earth, sending dirt and jagged rocks flying. Lui Yan pivoted, his legs coiling like springs, narrowly avoiding the swipe that could have shattered bones. Every instinct screamed at him, guiding him through the chaos.

He noticed something - the creature's left front limb moved slightly slower than the right, a faint stiffness. His eyes sharpened. If he could exploit that, he might turn the tide.

Chen Wuying attacked again, hurling a concentrated burst of elemental qi toward the beast's side. The creature roared in pain, but its momentum barely faltered. His strike was powerful, precise, but lacking subtlety. Lui Yan frowned. Force alone wouldn't win this fight.

The valley trembled as the beast let out a deafening roar, spinning in a wide arc that sent Lin Yumo tumbling. Rocks crashed down around him, narrowly missing Yan Mei, who leaped gracefully out of harm's way, her wards flaring brightly.

"This is it," Lui Yan muttered to himself, heart pounding. He focused, tuning into every vibration, every shift in the beast's aura. He could feel the pulse of its qi - the rhythm of its strikes, the ebb and flow of its strength.

In one fluid motion, he dodged under its swinging tail and thrust forward, planting a dagger of condensed spiritual energy at the joint of the creature's left limb. A sharp cry echoed through the valley as the beast recoiled, stumbling on uneven ground.

"Now!" Lui Yan shouted to Lin Yumo. The lanky boy's formation sparked violently, drawing the beast's attention fully to him. Chen Wuying smirked, nodding faintly at Lui Yan - acknowledgment and rivalry intertwined.

With careful steps, Lui Yan circled the creature, his mind racing. He noticed the pattern now: each time it roared, it left its left flank exposed for the briefest of moments. One misstep, one moment of hesitation, and he could end this.

The moment came. The beast reared, ready to strike at Lin Yumo again. Lui Yan lunged, channeling his cultivated energy into a concentrated strike at the exposed flank. A brilliant burst of light erupted as his energy met the beast's scale, piercing through the mystical armor that had seemed invulnerable.

-

The creature let out a final, shuddering roar and collapsed, quaking. Dust and debris filled the air, settling slowly around the battered disciples. The valley seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the aftermath.

Lui Yan staggered slightly, drained but alive. Yan Mei rushed forward, her hands brushing his arm in silent reassurance. Lin Yumo clapped his hands, wide-eyed and exhilarated. "You did it, Lui Yan! You actually did it!"

Chen Wuying's eyes narrowed, a strange mixture of respect and suppressed envy flickering across his features. "You survived," he said, voice low, almost begrudging. "Don't think this makes you stronger than me. Yet."

But even he could not deny the brilliance of the young disciple's instincts.

As the dust settled, Lui Yan noticed a faint glimmer beneath the fallen creature. Curious, he stepped closer and knelt, brushing away the dirt. A crystalline core pulsed with a soft, azure light, veins of unknown energy twisting like roots through the gem-like surface.

His pulse quickened. This was no ordinary beast core - it radiated raw spiritual energy far beyond the typical level of Outer Sect creatures. The implications were immense. Such a core could elevate cultivation, refine rare medicines, or even awaken latent abilities.

Before he could examine it further, a distant rumble echoed through the valley. The mountains themselves seemed to shiver. A cold wind swept past, carrying a strange, almost imperceptible whisper: "This is only the beginning…"

Lui Yan's eyes widened. Something ancient, something far greater than the Outer Valley beast, had taken notice.

He glanced at his companions. Yan Mei's expression mirrored his apprehension. Lin Yumo's grin had faltered slightly. Even Chen Wuying's scowl seemed more measured, aware of the unspoken danger.

Lui Yan rose slowly, his mind racing. The trial, the beast, the mysterious core - everything was connected. If the sect elders knew about this core, it could change everything for him. And yet, the whisper lingered in his mind, a promise of far greater challenges ahead.

The Outer Valley had tested him, pushed him to his limits. But it had only awakened a fraction of what he could become. And Lui Yan knew - deep down - that his path was far from over.

As they began the journey back to the sect, the valley falling into eerie silence behind them, Lui Yan could not shake the feeling that eyes unseen, forces ancient and powerful, were already watching his every step.
