Chapter 16 - The Fugu Dinner — Launch’s Kindness

The island was simply too small.

Training needed space—especially Turtle School training, which wasn't just about fighting. It was about doing goal-oriented work: farming, delivering milk, and a bunch of tasks that demanded stamina and discipline.

So they had to move somewhere bigger.

After lunch, Master Roshi packed up the house into a capsule.

They boarded the plane and went searching for a larger, more suitable island.

Because they were terrified Launch might sneeze and spray them with a machine gun, Roshi and Krillin sat as far away from her as humanly possible.

Launch ended up squeezed into the back row with Goku.

Before long, they arrived on a huge island—the very one where Ox-King and Grandpa Gohan had once trained under Master Roshi.

Everything was ready.

Training was finally about to begin.

Goku took out the Good Brothers Candy the system had given him… and ate one.

Krillin immediately leaned over.

"Hey! What're you eating? Sharing is a thing, you know."

Goku glanced at him lazily and pulled out the second candy.

Seeing it was just a candy, Krillin scoffed.

"Tch. I thought it was something good. It's just candy…"

"Then don't eat it."

Goku tried to take it back—

"Eat! I'll eat it! I didn't say I won't!"

Krillin snatched it, ripped the wrapper, and stuffed it into his mouth.

"…Taste is kinda average."

The Next Morning

Training officially began.

Master Roshi lectured them early, in a rare moment of seriousness.

"Martial arts aren't for winning fights…

And they're not for impressing girls.

They're meant to make you healthy—so you can live a happy life.

But if someone threatens you or others with unjust force…

Then as martial artists, we must stand up!"

"Understood!" both of them replied.

"Then today's training starts—run a lap with me."

And just like that, Goku and Krillin began true, orthodox training.

Evening

The sunset dyed the sky red.

Roshi said cheerfully, "It's almost dark. There's a delicious dinner waiting at home."

Then he added, grinning:

"Tomorrow, the real strict training begins.

But before dinner, I'll test you one more time."

He picked up a stone, carved with the character (Turtle), and threw it deep into the forest.

Krillin blinked. "What's that for?"

Roshi smiled. "Go find it.

Thirty minutes. Whoever brings it back gets to eat dinner.

If neither of you finds it in time—no dinner for both of you!"

The moment he finished, Goku and Krillin bolted into the forest.

Not long after, Goku found the stone.

But even though his stomach was starting to growl… he hesitated.

Because he knew what Launch might have cooked tonight.

Fugu.

And he really didn't want to spend the whole night on the toilet.

Just then, Krillin spotted him.

He walked over, eyes wide.

"Dude… are you even human? You seriously found that tiny stone in this forest?!"

Goku smiled. "Just lucky."

Krillin's eyes flashed with sly intent.

"But… is that really the stone? Let me see."

This kind of childish trick wouldn't fool Goku for a second.

Goku could see it clearly—Krillin's greed, his little schemes practically written on his face.

He calmly showed the stone.

"Yeah. See? There's writing on it."

Krillin took it, pretending to inspect it closely.

But his legs were already tensing.

The next instant—

Krillin exploded forward and sprinted back toward the house.

Goku "panicked" and chased after him, cursing loudly on purpose.

"Damn you! Stop right there!"

Krillin laughed as he ran.

"Hahahaha! I'm doing this for your own good! The world's cruel—competition is ruthless!"

Goku chased a few steps… then slowed down when they were near the house.

Krillin reached Master Roshi first.

Roshi took the stone and chuckled.

"This round—Krillin wins! Come eat!"

Krillin beamed. "Thank you, Master!"

So Goku had to go hungry while Roshi and Krillin sat down for dinner.

Krillin raised a cup.

"Come on, Master—another drink!"

Roshi downed it, ate a bite of meat, then gave Launch a big thumbs-up.

"Wahahaha! Delicious! Launch, your cooking is amazing!"

Launch smiled. "I'm glad you like it."

Krillin took a bite of fish and lit up.

"It's spicy, fresh, melts in your mouth—this is incredible! Launch is seriously good!"

Then he turned his head and deliberately chewed extra loudly at Goku.

"Too bad, too bad! Such an amazing dinner… and you don't get any, Goku!"

Launch froze.

She looked at Goku, confused.

"Goku… why aren't you eating?"

Krillin answered before Goku could.

"Because he failed the test. Master said he's not allowed to eat tonight."

Launch nodded slowly.

"Oh… it's that strict."

Roshi and Krillin kept eating.

Then Roshi asked casually, "Launch, what kind of fish is this? Why is it so good? I've never had it before…"

Launch smiled. "Hehe, I bought it at the island market. The seller said it's called fugu."

Roshi and Krillin both froze.

Their faces turned instantly green.

"…What?!"

"Fugu?!"

And that night—

Roshi and Krillin ran to the toilet all night long.

Launch was fine because she didn't eat meat at night to maintain her figure.

Goku didn't eat dinner at all… so around midnight, he was starving, his stomach roaring, unable to sleep.

Then—

Launch walked in carrying a plate of grilled meat and a bowl of rice.

"Can't sleep because you're hungry, right? Get up and eat. I made you something."

Goku was about to thank her, but Launch put a finger to her lips.

"Shh. Eat quietly. Don't let Roshi find out."

"…Yeah. Thank you, Launch."

Launch smiled gently.

"Don't mention it. We're sharing a room because there aren't enough blankets.

But your stomach's been drumming all night—you're keeping me awake too."

Goku's expression softened.

He lowered his voice.

"Launch… you're really good to me. If when I grow up you still aren't married… I'll earn money and take care of you."

Launch's eyes warmed.

She smiled and patted his head.

"Okay. I'll wait for you to grow up."

The Next Morning

Goku asked brightly, "Can we train now?"

Roshi and Krillin looked like walking corpses.

Roshi sighed weakly.

"Rest today. We train tomorrow."

At that moment, Launch set a full breakfast on the table.

"Come eat…"

The second they saw Launch—and her cooking—

Roshi and Krillin turned green again.

"Nope nope nope… can't eat…"

Krillin doubled over. "Ah… it's starting again. I need the toilet…"

But Roshi rushed in first.

Krillin stood outside the door holding his stomach, suffering.

"Master… hurry up…"

Meanwhile, Goku and Launch were already in the dining room, eating calmly.

After Goku finished, he walked out.

Krillin was still guarding the bathroom door.

Goku teased him with a grin:

"Krillin, breakfast is really good today. You sure you don't want a bite? I promise it's not poisoned—and it tastes great…"

"Nope!" Krillin snapped, turning his face away in stubborn pride.

Deep down, he regretted it more than anything.

Yesterday, he never should've stolen that stone.

"Grrrr…"

"Master… hurry up…"
