Chapter 68 - liar liar pants on fire

Maribel's plan unraveled in silence.

The poison never made it past the glass.

She had prepared it carefully odorless, colorless, something that would look like exhaustion, stress, a heart that simply gave out under pressure. She had practiced the timing in her head a dozen times, rehearsed the concern she would wear on her face, the grief she would perform flawlessly. Kairo was not even relaxed to drink.

By the time she left the estate, her certainty was gone.

Back in her apartment, panic crept in where confidence used to live. Naya's absence was no longer reassuring it was threatening. Ghosts didn't disappear unless they were hunting.

Maribel paced, mind racing through contingencies.

If she couldn't eliminate Kairo physically, she would destroy him socially.Plan b in motion.

Reputation was slower than poison, but just as fatal.

She stopped in front of the mirror and stared at herself for a long moment. Then, with deliberate hands, she tore the silk blouse at the shoulder. Smudged her lipstick. Reddened her eyes with practiced precision. She knew how to sell vulnerability. She had built her career on it.After all, before she came in she had tampered with the camera in kairos estate and no one suspected.

She smiled to herself then she set up the camera in her room

Adjusted the angle.

Pressed record.

Her voice trembled on cue. "I didn't want to do this," she began, tears pooling convincingly. "But I can't stay silent anymore."

She spoke of power. Of intimidation. Of being cornered in private meetings. She described Kairo as charming in public and pervert in private, careful to choose words that suggested without needing proof. She painted herself as reluctant, frightened, morally conflicted.

"I tried to keep this professional," she whispered. "But when I said no, everything changed."

She let the silence stretch, let the tears fall.

"I'm speaking out because no one should feel unsafe."

She ended the recording and sat back, breathing hard not from emotion, but from adrenaline.

Within hours, the video was sent to multiple outlets.

The headlines exploded.

Maribel watched the coverage roll in, phone vibrating nonstop. She felt no triumph only grim relief. This, at least, she knew how to survive.

Across the city, Kairo stared at the screen in stunned silence as the video played.

"This is a lie," he said in disbelief.

And Maribel, in her desperation, had forgotten the one rule that kept operatives alive: never go loud when a ghost is already watching.
