Chapter 1: The Unexpected Encounter

Lily Adams adjusted her silver clutch nervously as she stepped into the grand ballroom. The soft glow of chandeliers bounced off the marble floor, reflecting off the polished heels of every high-society guest. She hated events like this. Pretentious smiles, fake compliments, and endless small talk—it was exhausting. But she needed this. One night could open doors for her new marketing agency.

Her eyes scanned the crowd, taking note of familiar faces. Then she saw him.

Ethan Black.

Her heart skipped. Not with love. Not anymore. This man had once shattered her trust, left her humiliated, and yet, here he was, looking as effortlessly perfect as ever, in a tailored suit that screamed power and wealth.

He turned, and their eyes met. Lily froze. Ethan's lips curved into a slow, confident smile, one that had haunted her dreams for months.

"Lily," he said, his deep voice cutting through the chatter around them. "It's… been a long time."

Her throat went dry. "Ethan." She forced the name out like a warning. "I didn't expect to see you here."

He stepped closer, casually brushing past the crowd as though the world existed only for the two of them. "Neither did I. But fate has a sense of humor, doesn't it?"

Lily wanted to run. She wanted to remind him of everything he'd done. But instead, she stood there, silent, as he tilted his head, looking at her like he remembered every detail of her face, every tear she had once shed because of him.

And then… he called her by that nickname. The one he used before everything fell apart.

She froze completely

Chapter 2: Old Wounds

The memory hit her like a cold wave. Two years ago, she had trusted him. She had believed in Ethan's words, in their promises. But then, at the most vulnerable moment, he had left. Without explanation. Without apology.

Now, seeing him here, confident and unshaken, stirred emotions she thought she had buried. Anger, yes. Hurt, always. And… something else, something she hated admitting.

Ethan's hand lightly brushed against hers. "Can we talk somewhere private?" he asked. His voice had softened, almost gentle—a dangerous change she didn't trust.

Lily hesitated. Her mind screamed Run! but curiosity, and maybe a tiny spark of old affection, anchored her.

"Fine," she said, her voice controlled. "Five minutes. That's all."

They moved to a quieter terrace, away from the sparkling lights and murmuring guests. The city stretched below them, alive and endless.

"I… I owe you an explanation," Ethan began, eyes dark. "Back then, I didn't mean to hurt you. Circumstances…" He trailed off, as if the words themselves could not do justice to the truth.

Lily crossed her arms, resisting the urge to step back. "Circumstances? You left me. Without a word. Without a single call. And you call that circumstances?"

He flinched, but only slightly. "I had no choice. But I never stopped thinking about you."

Her chest tightened. She hated him. And yet… her heart betrayed her with every beat.

The night air was thick with unspoken words, tension crackling like electricity between them.

And just when she thought the moment couldn't get more intense, Ethan leaned slightly closer, just enough for her to feel the warmth radiating off him.

She stepped back sharply. "Stop."

But the spark had been reignited. And there was no putting it out now.

Chapter 3: Close Quarters

Over the next few days, Ethan found ways to intersect with Lily's life. A chance meeting at her favorite café. A phone call that made her heart race. And now, he had asked to meet at her office.

"You're taking risks," Lily said, arms crossed as Ethan leaned casually against her desk.

"I'm willing to risk a lot for you," he said smoothly. "Even if you hate me."

Lily's eyes narrowed. "I don't hate you." She immediately regretted saying it. She should have said it. Should have shoved him away. But she couldn't.

Their conversation danced on the edge of flirtation and tension. A brush of fingers here, a teasing remark there.

And then, he leaned in, close enough for her to feel his breath. "You're impossible," he murmured.

Her pulse jumped. "And you're infuriating."

The world outside the office didn't exist. Only the heat of the moment, the tension, the memories that lingered between them.

Then—footsteps. Someone clearing their throat. Lily spun around, heart racing.

Ethan smiled knowingly, leaving her frustrated and longing at the same time.

Do you want me to continue with that?
