Chapter 15 - Eyes That Linger

The classroom settled into a low murmur as the teacher adjusted his glasses and placed the register on the desk.

Mr. Harrison had been teaching here for over fifteen years.

He noticed patterns.

And Lucas Cole was breaking one.

A Teacher's Perspective

Mr. Harrison's gaze paused for half a second longer than usual when it reached the window seat.

Lucas sat upright.

Back straight.

Eyes attentive.

No stiff just present.

That alone was strange.

In the past, Lucas had always been quiet in a different way. The kind that faded into the background, neither disruptive nor engaged.

Now?

He looked grounded.

When the teacher began explaining the lesson, Lucas followed without drifting. When notes were written on the board, he copied them efficiently, without rushing or lagging behind.

Mr. Harrison made a small mark beside Lucas's name.

Interesting.

During the short break, chairs scraped softly against the floor.

Lucas stayed seated, opening his notebook calmly.

That's when he felt it.

Intent Perception.

Not loud.

Not intrusive.

Just awareness.

Curiosity mostly from the girls nearby.

Not the shallow kind.

The quiet kind.

Two desks over, a girl leaned slightly toward her friend and whispered, "Did he… always look like that?"

Her friend shook her head. "No. I think he has changed."

"Don't you think he look handsome now"

Lucas heard neither.

But he felt no hostility.

Just observation.

Her Reaction

She sat near the aisle, arms crossed.

From the corner of her eye, she watched Lucas.

Once.

Twice.

Her intent wasn't warm.

But it wasn't disgust anymore either.

It was irritation mixed with something else.

Uncertainty.

She didn't like that.

When Lucas stood briefly to throw away a scrap of paper, she looked up

And he didn't look at her.

Not even accidentally.

That bothered her more than any a stare ever could.

Her jaw tightened.

Why is he acting like I don't exist?

Group Work Without Being Pushed

Later, Mr. Harrison announced a short discussion exercise.

"Pair up with the person beside you."

The girl sitting next to Lucas hesitated just for a moment.

Then spoke.

"Lucas… want to work together?"

Her voice was normal. Polite.

Lucas turned.

Met her eyes.

"Sure."

No eagerness.

No avoidance.

Just ease.

They discussed the topic efficiently. Lucas listened, responded clearly, and didn't dominate the conversation.

The girl glanced at him once more than necessary.

He's… easy to talk to.

That surprised her.

The Teacher Confirms It

As class ended, Mr. Harrison called out casually.

"Lucas. Stay back for a moment."

The room emptied.

Lucas stood beside the desk, calm.

Mr. Harrison studied him openly now.

"You seem different," the teacher said. Not accusing. Just observant.

"More focused."

Lucas answered honestly. "I've been working on myself, sir."

A pause.

Then a nod.

"Good. Keep it that way."

Nothing more was said.

But respect had been quietly established.

Walking Out

As Lucas left the classroom, he felt it again.

A mix of curiosity.

Neutral interest.

One sharp thread of frustration from her.

He passed by without slowing.

Without pride.

Without resentment.

I don't need to announce my change.

Let them notice it themselves.

The system remained silent.

And Lucas walked forward

Unbothered.

Unchallenged.

Unyielding.
